Bibliographic review].","authors":"C Rozmán, A Grañena, L Hernandez-Nieto","doi":"","DOIUrl":"","url":null,"abstract":"<p><p>A review of the present results of bone-marrow transplantation (B.M.T.) in severe aplastic anaemia is presented. Nowadays, there is little doubt that for patients with severe aplastic anaemia the treatment of choice is the B.M.T. provided always that a suitable donor exists. If the patient is fortunate enough to have a normal identical twin, the syngeneic B.M.T. without immunosuppresive conditioning must be performed. This is usually successful, though in some patients failures can be observed due to probable immunological interference. This can be overcome by a new syngeneic B.M.T. preceded by immunosuppression. The usual type of suitable donors is an HLA-identical (including locus D) sibling (allogeneic B.M.T.). Approximately 50% of patients treated in this way can become long-term survivors. The chief complications causing mortality from the allogeneic B.M.T. are graft rejection and graft-versus-host-disease (G.V.H.D.). In order to reduce the graft rejection rate, transfusions from marrow-donor and relatives prior to the transplantation should be avoided. Other probable factor influencing the final outcome of the allogeneic B.M.T. are the interval diagnosis-transplantation, age of the patient, marrow cell dose, the difference of sex between the donor and the recipients and others. Semi-incompatible and incompatible allogeneic B.M.T. are briefly considered.</p>","PeriodicalId":21265,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de pesquisas medicas e biologicas","volume":"12 2-3","pages":"197-206"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"11265024","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the thyroid gland, degeneration and necrosis of the follicles and absence of the colloid substance with later substitution of the glandular tissue by a cicatricial fibrous tissue were observed. In the periodontium changes occurred in the alveolar bone, followed by degeneration of the periodontal ligament with areas of hyalinization from 30 days period up to the conclusion of the experiment. This was shown to be due to the presence of non-specific IgE in the normal sera of the bad recipients. Both positive and negative interaction, as measured by PCA reactions, could be observed between sera of the two different species. Inhibition of PCA reactions was seen when positive serum was diluted with normal serum from rat and mouse strains which were bad recipients, as opposed to what occured when sera from good recipients, were used to dilute. Synergism, on the other hand, was observed when mixtures of subsensitizing doses of both rat and mouse positive sera were tested. These results give further support to the suggestion that rat mast cells receptors for rat and mouse IgE are either the same, or are present, near enough each other, to produce steric hindrance.</p>","PeriodicalId":21265,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de pesquisas medicas e biologicas","volume":"12 1","pages":"47-52"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1979-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"11666539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
