The hyaline necrosis frequently associated to a hemorrhagic infiltrate represented the most important feature in the lesional picture of the disease. Other findings were swelling, loss of cross striations, vacuolation and regenerative changes of muscle fibres. This last one was represented by multinucleated sarcoblasts and the presence of thin and strongly basophilic new-formed fibres. Interstitial hemorrhage was frequently seen and an inflammatory afflux was only rarely observed. This histological picture was considered as characteristic and highly significant for the diagnosis of Leptospirosis.</p>","PeriodicalId":21265,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de pesquisas medicas e biologicas","volume":"13 1-3","pages":"9-13"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17223767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These studies are designed to investigate factors influencing the chance of infection of man when metacyclic trypanosomes in bug faeces are deposited on the human skin. As mentioned in the first paper in this series (Alvarenga & Marsden) we have epidemiological evidence that people can live for years in houses with infected bugs and not acquire the disease although skin contamination with infected faeces must occur frequently. Wood showed that metacyclic trypanosomes of T. cruzi lost their motility within 30 minutes after exposure to human sweat. He did not report infectivity experiments. Since such an effect would limit the chances of T. cruzi transmission under field conditions we decided to repeat Wood's experiments with observations on the infectivity of trypanosome suspensions.</p>","PeriodicalId":21265,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de pesquisas medicas e biologicas","volume":"13 1-3","pages":"53-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"17826876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Regarding the myoblasts and fibroblasts it was interesting to compare their ultrastructural features since there has been some difficulty in the identification of these two types of mononucleated cells by the authors which deal with light microscopy in the study of developing skeletal muscle. It was possible to note that between nine and eighteen weeks of development the muscle is different from mature skeletal muscle and is composed predominantly of two populations of muscle cells. These are the myoblasts which are mononucleated cells and the myotubes which are multinucleated muscle cells. After eighteen weeks of development there occur only muscle fibres similar to those of adult muscle. Fibroblasts also occur frequently in the developing muscle: they too are mononucleated cells. Fibroblasts and collagen fibrils are seen between the muscle cells and structures related to them as early as nine weeks of development. Bundles of collagen were also seen in the cytoplasm of fibroblasts.</p>","PeriodicalId":21265,"journal":{"name":"Revista brasileira de pesquisas medicas e biologicas","volume":"13 1-3","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1980-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"18426367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After TRH stimulation, only 4 patients exhibited a percentual increment greater than 100% over the PRL basal value. PRL response to TRH was negative in 8 patients.
