Yet, few techniques exist for generating these perspectives. This paper proposes a method for creative generation of multiple perspectives to aid designing systems for dealing with wicked problems involving multiple stakeholders. We illustrate the technique by applying it to the problem of Burmese pythons that originally were pets but were released into Florida's Everglades. Burmese pythons have become a popular pet in many parts of the United States. When small, they are easily fed and cared for. But as they grow, reaching over 20 feet in length, growing in excess of 200 pounds, and producing as much excrement as a horse, they become much more difficult to house. Many are released into the wild. It is estimated that 30,000 pythons now inhabit the Florida Everglades. As conditions become more crowded, the reptiles are increasingly headed across the lower one-third of the U.S., which is python-friendly habitat. No one knows what might happen next...","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124757109","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Ontology-based semantic annotation of documents is one of the promising ways for knowledge discovery from text repositories. Existing semantic annotation methods usually require many labeled training examples before they can effectively operate, and this bottleneck holds back the widely applications of these semantic annotation methods. In this paper, we propose a semi-supervised semantic annotation method, self-teaching SVM-struct, which uses fewer labeled examples to improve the annotating performance. The key of the self-teaching method is how to identify the reliably predicted examples for retraining. Two novel confidence measures are developed to estimate prediction confidence. The experimental results show that the prediction performance of our self-teaching semantic annotation method is promising.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124786128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We will focus on the textual artifacts known as \"Programming Guidelines\" and on the rules and practices they contain. Our reflection is grounded in the practical activities of the people involved in the innovation processes. In particular, we take into account how in FLOSS to become a peer (\"Peering\") is an hybrid result of social dynamics and artifacts actions. We will show how Programming Guidelines participate in building boundaries around the potential participants and in defining the legitimate form of participation in terms of coding practices. Our conclusions emerge from the analysis of two empirical cases: the operating systems OpenSolaris and the geographical information system GRASS.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126795961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we identified the Grid services that could facilitate the integration and interoperation of Health Care data and frameworks world-wide. While many of the current Health Care Grid projects address issues such as data location and description on the Grid and the security aspects, the problems connected to data storage, integrity, preservation and distribution have been neglected. We describe the currently available Grid storage services and protocols that can come in handy when dealing with those problems. We further describe a Grid infrastructure to build a cooperative Health Care environment based on currently available Grid services and a service able to validate it.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129035012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design stresses initial signal detection using the wireless network array. All other array operations depend on detecting a signal of interest prior to activating follow-on sequences of signal processing, potentially including emitter geolocation and signal reception/demodulation. Of specific concern for network operations is conservation of energy costs while providing an operable array. Using the Neyman-Pearson criterion, a desired aperture can be determined providing an optimal probability of detection against an acceptable false alarm rate. Control of these parameters will be based on usage of the distributed wireless sensor nodes. The sensor nodes will be segmented into sub-arrays to produce the desired aperture. Upon signal detection, the network may then further optimize the aperture for purposes of increasing signal to noise ratio in signal processing.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123843803","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Note taking significantly influenced the manner in which participants browsed for information about candidates. Note taking competed for time and cognitive resources and resulted in less thorough browsing. Effects were strongest when participants thought that their notes would be seen by others. Think-aloud comments indicated that participants were more evaluative when taking notes, especially shared notes. Our results suggest that there could be design trade-offs between eDemocracy and e-Participation technologies.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123686888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A questionnaire was administered to 140 college students. The results showed interesting differences by field, gender, and visual preference. Two extreme groups of respondents, six male and six female, were recruited from a pool of 28 respondents matching the criteria of being either more visual than verbal or more verbal than visual. Participants were tested in spatial ability and working memory capacity. They completed 10 reasoning problems while their eye movements were tracked to examine any correlation between their stated preference for verbal or visual information presentation and their actual visual navigation during the task. Visual navigation and performance on problems with and without an optional diagram were compared within-subjects. Within subject and between-group differences in the usage of screen elements as well as field and gender interactions were indicated.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114535071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The conceptual framework is based on the literature covering issues of commons based production models and the organization of open source projects. The comparative analysis reveals that Varnish is a hybrid project, encompassing the features of open source software while managed by a company as a proprietary project would. It is also hybrid in the sense that it employs a combination of hierarchical and commons based peer production model features. This mix of characters addresses a variety of problems related to each of the aforementioned categories.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121483430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These 0Day vulnerabilities are of particular interest when assessing the risk to a system from exploit of vulnerabilities which are not generally known to the public or, most importantly, to the owners of the system. Using the 0Day definition given above, we analyzed the 0Day lifespans of 491 vulnerabilities and conservatively estimated that in the worst year there were on average 2500 0Day vulnerabilities in existence on any given day. Then using a small but intriguing set of 15 0Day vulnerability lifespans representing the time from actual discovery to public disclosure, we made a more aggressive estimate. In this case, we estimated that in the worst year there were, on average, 4500 0Day vulnerabilities in existence on any given day.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"324 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121577951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The discipline of business process reengineering has proposed guidelines for this transformation, but the task is still challenging and the risk of failure remains high. Especially group work presents major challenges for process design. Accordingly, this paper proposes a group support system to support process development. The paper leverages the collaboration engineering framework in designing an artifact to support teamwork in process elicitation. The artifact has been designed at a conceptual level and validated through a business case in a global process industry organization. The case indicates that the method for process elicitation works as intended in the given context. The contribution is a group process for business process development.","PeriodicalId":211759,"journal":{"name":"2009 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114000966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
