Using a device with a nominal −3 dB frequency response of less than 20GHz, photodetected broadband RF signals at 33 and 49.5GHz are demonstrated by driving the modulator with a 5Gbps ASK-modulated carrier at 16.5GHz. The scheme permits continuously tunable carrier-to-sideband ratio and large suppression of spurious sidebands in excess 30dB, and presents a compact layout comprising a single phase modulator and a photonic integrated filter. BER measurements confirm negligible chirp-induced effects of modulated sideband filtering after fiber transmission.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"21 10","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133621132","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the optical transmitter in the BS-ILC can reuse well-developed technologies in fibre-optic communication by employing narrow infrared beams, the receiver’s design faces challenges of collecting sufficient power. This study proposes an automated design of the receiver to address the narrow field of view of the receiver. An optical double sideband plus carrier (DSB+C) signal with the carrier and the two sidebands being orthogonally polarized is generated by a dual-polarization quadrature phase shift keying (DP-QPSK) modulator, with the generated signal sent to a phase modulator (PM). The PM can support phase modulation in two orthogonal polarization directions. The phase-modulated signals are projected to one polarization direction and detected at a photodetector (PD). Switching the polarity of the coding signal, a $pi$ phase shift is introduced. In addition, the amplitude of the generated signal is dependent on the amplitude of the input coding signal. Thus, a windowing function can be applied to the generated waveform by using a windowed input phase coding signal, to suppress the sidelobes in the spectrum of the generated microwave signal. The key features of the proposed waveform generator include all-optical generation without the need of electrical components and optical filters, thus ensuring a wide operating frequency range. Experimental results show that, using a Gaussian windowed 64-bit pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) coding signal, a microwave phase-coded microwave waveform is generated with the sidelobes of the spectrum largely suppressed to below the system noise floor and a pulse compression ratio (PCR) as large as 133.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127438957","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An applied reference clock at 18.5 GHz is successfully multiplied up to 92.5 GHz (fivefold) with low additional phase noise. The SOI circuit includes a high-speed electro-optic phase modulator employed for optical spectral comb (OSC) generation and a thermally tunable distributed feedback resonator filter for selecting one of the OSC mode. Beating of the input laser mode with the mode selected by the filter into a high-speed photodiode generates the target output carrier frequency. By suitably tuning the clock frequency and the integrated optical filter, the solution permits reconfigurable frequency generation up to W-band and, potentially, beyond. Experimental results demonstrate that the generated multiple carrier frequencies exhibit phase noise performance comparable with the one of the clock source.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133365115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the first RoF link, two independent microwave vector signals are modulated on a single optical carrier with one polarization state, transmitted over a single-mode fiber (SMF), and received at a coherent receiver. To recover the two microwave vector signals, a DSP algorithm is developed and applied to eliminate the joint phase noise from the transmitter and the local oscillator (LO) laser sources as well as the unstable offset frequency between the two laser sources. In the second RoF link, the spectral efficiency is doubled by using polarization multiplexing. Four independent 16-QAM microwave vector signals on a single optical carrier with two orthogonal polarization states are transmitted. Error-free transmission for both links is experimentally demonstrated.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121468749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a method to expand the capacity of A-RoF-based MFH, we experimentally study polarization-multiplexed (POLMUX) transmission of A-RoF signals. In the 10-km single-mode fiber transmission of POLMUX $2 times 2$ MIMO spatial streams, we occasionally observed difficulty in estimating channel state information. This is probably caused by two reasons: the optical power imbalance after polarization separation at the receiving end, and the reduction of the channel degrees of freedom due to two output signals being identical.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129826232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
