Different photonic integrated circuits or hybrid integration devices have been proposed to implement different photonic signal generation techniques offering different semiconductor laser structures. Here, we present a hybrid integrated optical heterodyne source based on the InPSi3N4 integration platform. The module integrates two laser structures followed by different optical components to tune the generated wavelength. Each laser structure has a tuning range over >100 nm. We demonstrate the generation of a free-running beat-note from 70 to 110 GHz with a linewidth less than 108 kHz.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125048017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thanks to the random distribution of the feedbacks, the time delays of the OEO become randomly distributed, which make the OEO be able to generate chaotic signals with significantly reduced TDS. In the implementation, the randomly distributed feedbacks can be introduced by either incorporating a single random sampled fiber Bragg grating (RS-FBG) in the OEO loop or using a randomly spaced multiwavelength light source. Experimental results have confirmed the effectiveness of the approach for chaotic signal generation with suppressed TDS.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126159625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A centralized radio access network (C-RAN) is adopted with the signal generation and radar processing performed in a central unit and a low-cost photonic fronthaul distributes the radio frequency (RF) signals to the radio heads. The photonic fronthaul is based on intermediate-frequency-over-fiber (IFoF) using wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) transceivers in small-form-factor-package (SFP) and adapted for analog RF modulation. Using a 5G-NR FR2 signal with 100MHz bandwidth and QPSK modulation, we demonstrate target detection with a precision of approximately 7 centimeters using joint coherent MIMO processing with adaptive pulse compression (APC). Here, implementation of these sensors on thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) on quartz substrates is proposed and studied. Simulation results confirm the superior performance of such sensors compared to those on previously pursued platforms. A maximum field enhancement (FE) factor of 1100 with 17 GHz bandwidth at the center frequency of 28 GHz is reachable on this platform with the use of a bow-tie antenna. Also, using a patch antenna, a maximum FE factor of 950 can be obtained with a 39 dB difference between the carrier and first sideband intensities for an incident electric field amplitude of 10 V/m. Therefore, by choosing the proper type of antenna, both high-bandwidth and high-sensitivity EO microwave sensors are achievable on TFLN on quartz.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122786956","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Fano resonator is implemented by using a grating-based Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity-coupled microring resonator (MRR) at the add-drop ports combined with a bus waveguide to form a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI). Due to the resonant mode interference between the MRR and the MZI, the MRR and the Fabry–Perot (FP) cavity, two parallel Fano resonators with asymmetric line shapes are resulted. A microheater is incorporated in the MRR to achieve thermal tunability. By tuning the direct current (DC) voltage applied to the microheater, the Fano resonance with a high SR of 379.08 dB/nm and an extinction ratio (ER) of 22.97 dB is achieved. Thanks to its ultra-sharp line shape, instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) with improved sensitivity and resolution is experimentally demonstrated. A frequency measurement range of 7 GHz with a resolution better than ±0.2 GHz is achieved.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"97 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124671429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We unlock this unique feature by manipulating the phase and amplitude of multi-order RF modulation sidebands using a versatile MWP spectral shaping circuit. Through a series of experiments, we show a linearized notch filter that exhibits a stopband rejection of 53 dB, more than 32 dB reduction of third-order intermodulation distortion in the passband, and an enhanced SFDR of 119 dB$cdot Hz^{2/3}$. Our demonstration breaks the conventional and fragmented approach of functionality and linearization in integrated circuit and will potentially stimulate the implementation of integrated MWP system with advanced functionalities and high performance in the future.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125477222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Optical rectification (OR) is a non-absorptive, parametric process based on the 2$^{nd}$-order nonlinear electrical susceptibility, $chi^{(2)}$. When OR is used to perform photodetection (ORPD), the response time is limited fundamentally by the bandwidth of optical nonlinearity ($gt 200$ THz). The differential responsivity of an ORPD increases with RF modulation frequency, making it increasingly attractive as the frequency increases into the THz. Additionally, ORPD’s are amenable to significant optical preamplification without saturating the response, allowing orders of magnitude increase in output current. We develop a traveling-wave model for ORPD which is confirmed by experiments and accurately predicts the differential responsivity. We measure world record differential responsivities at 16 GHz and 500 GHz of 5 $times 10^{-5}$ A/W and 3.3$times 10^{-4}$ A/W, respectively.","PeriodicalId":211328,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Topical Meeting on Microwave Photonics (MWP)","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131530153","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
