This gets reflected on a gradually increased difficulty. UTEC, as a fast-growing small university, it's starting to face new challenges like massification of education without compromising personalization and quality. UTEC is trying to figure out a way to tackle those challenges by identifying conceptual gaps and closing them with the use of educational technology. The result so far is positive in some Science courses: it allowed UTEC to gradually increase the difficulty bar of some evaluations for preparation by 70% in order to close the gaps between evaluations. This allowed teachers to develop more student-centered classes and aim to higher levels of Bloom's taxonomy. This article will describe the process, initial results, as well as the future challenges related to massive courses, personalization, and closing difficulty gaps.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132636863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Students should define and elaborate their project, which must be open enough to stimulate students' creativity and, at the same time, framed by a context that makes it an exciting initiative concerning real business. In a typical engineering laboratory, when defining this kind of activity, instructors (scholars or researchers) usually fall in one of two situations: 1) a very rigid project plan supported by a scholarship, oriented by requirements defined within a research project; or 2) a very academic exploratory project without clear short-term objectives, namely within the time the student will dedicate to it. Trying to avoid both perspectives usually is difficult, but subjects like Smart Cities, with a considerable innovation space, are clearly favorable to that goal. In this paper, starting from some models proposed to foster creativity in students, we will describe the steps taken to prepare a laboratory where students and companies can find an environment to promote creativity and critical thinking.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121003563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The complex and diverse information on the forum often makes many students' urgent problems unable to be solved in time. Therefore, how to identify the students' urgent posts from a large number of posts becomes a critical problem to be solved. This paper presents a model for identifying “urgent” posts that require immediate attention from the instructors. It is the first time deep learning methods have been applied to this task. We investigated different deep learning methods and proposed an improved recurrent convolutional neural networks to solve the problems of identifying posts. The experimental results show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods. The work has potential application across a range of platforms and can help teachers efficiently navigate their discussion forums so that timely intervention can support learning and potentially reduce dropout rates.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122107502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are factors that limit the teaching of computing in the education of children. As a solution to this problem, the project called “SCRATCHTON” is created, which looks forward to bringing technology to children in an efficiently and easy way. This consists in a programming contest where kids develop a game based on a given theme, where participants need to complete the challenge with the help of Scratch tools that were previously taught through video tutorials. With this, the goal is to encourage children to have better analytical skills, to awake computational thinking, and to increase interest in programming through incentives and recognition.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128983019","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this scenario, DE should be viewed not just in the technology basis, but rather with a systemic view that is compounded by all teaching modality aspects such as learning, teaching, communication, creation and management. Due to this need, it aims to analyse DE as a service system, like it is defined in the Service Science perspective, as dynamic settings of resources (people, technologies, organizations and shared information) to generate a mutual value. In doing so, it proposes the conceptual model DE-SS that provides a holistic vision of relations among resources and stakeholders in a distance education system.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127944386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Only a few of these students make a full course on Signal and Systems and therefore they cannot access to the classical Image Processing or Computer Vision courses On the other hand, students use social networking and post process their photos using the social app provided apps. We decided to use this interest in photo post-processing as a motivation to engage students in the technical aspects of Image Processing. We present some examples of the techniques developed in the course beginning with photography basics techniques, post processing in some open source programs and finally attempt to get the same result using image operations as developed in lectures.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130110794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, this is much more worrisome in rural areas or far from the country, where they do not even have all the basic services that an average citizen would have. Given the previous situation, the Ministry of Education implemented the “One Laptop Per Child” program, which consists of making each student from 6 to 12 years of credit an XO laptop. These are characterized by having a pedagogical approach in terms of enhancing the cognitive abilities of children. Then, the presented project seeks to reinforce the curiosity of the children using the 800 thousand XO distributed by the government, using these as a complement to school activities, thus helping the teacher's performance. In this way, it is planned that the students and teachers adapt to the use of technology.","PeriodicalId":211092,"journal":{"name":"2019 IEEE World Conference on Engineering Education (EDUNINE)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114901247","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
