Thus, Transfer Learning (TL) is widely applied to those data-consuming Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) models to avoid recollecting high-volume training samples from scratch. However, TL-based methods used in fault diagnosis for mechanical rotating components are still in the infancy phase. Poor practicality and usability problems increase the total preparing time. Without online diagnosis, there might be more unknown risks during the preparing time of a TL method. To reduce the preparing time of existing TL techniques, this paper proposes a TL-based Gradual Improvement Scheme (TLGIS) to achieve a systematic online diagnosis of rotating components. TLGIS solves the problem through seamless interactions among five modules of Data Preprocessing (DP), Data Estimating (DE), Data Modeling (DM), Model Improving (MI), and Accuracy Checking, (AC). Via illustrative examples, TLGIS is demonstrated to be reliable and robust using deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) by two public bearing datasets from the Internet and two types of rotating wheel datasets from a practical CNC machine. In total, TLGIS only requires at least 80 samples and at most 250 samples divided into small-size batches to gradually and continuously fine-tune the model with an accuracy of 90% and 99%, respectively, instead of inputting a large-scale dataset all at once, which is unrealistic in a practical production scenario. Compared to conventional approaches, TLGIS efficiently saves at most 90% of preparing time.","PeriodicalId":210076,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Material Sciences & Manufacturing Research","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125155693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The type of mortar used determines the flexural and compressive strength of the masonry. Currently, most mortars used in construction are cement based. However, due to the heavy energy-intensive processes that are involved in its production the cement industry is responsible for up to 10% of global CO2 emissions; therefore, there are serious environmental implications with the usage and application of cement mortars. A sustainable alternative are lime mortars which have 30% less embodied CO2. Lime mortars confer benefits in comparison to cement based mortars such as accommodating a greater degree of wall movement and improved damp resistance. The main disadvantage with lime mortars is the longer setting time which can take up to 91 days in addition to the low strength. A way to overcome this is to add cement replacements e.g pozzolans or slag. This paper investigates the properties of non-hydraulic (lime putty) lime mortar containing up to 20% ground granulated blastfurnace slag (GGBS). Findings show a minimal amount of GGBS addition of 2% doubles the mortar strength to 2 MPa within 91 days with an eventual strength of over 15 MPa achieved with 20% GGBS. Strengths satisfying minimum requirements for all four mortar designations were achieved with between 2 - 16% GGBS addition, all within 56 days ageing; with designations (i), (ii), (iii) & (iv) strengths being satisfied within 28 days. Therefore, non-hydraulic lime mortars with GGBS offer a more sustainable alternative to cement based mortars without compromising setting time or strength whilst offering improved flexibility and breathability","PeriodicalId":210076,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Material Sciences & Manufacturing Research","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124061806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The presence of dyes in the effluents is a major concern due to their effect on health and environment. Thus, these pollutants must be removed from wastewaters by appropriate treatments before their evacuation. In this regard, much attention has recently been paid to dried plants as low cost biomaterials. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the removal of Congo red dye (CR) from aqueous solutions by Carpobrotus edulis plant as natural adsorbent using batch adsorption technique at room temperature. The effect of contact time, pH, dye concentration, and adsorbent dose on the removal of dye was also studied. The experimental data were analyzed by using mathematical models to determine the thermodynamic parameters. The negative values of free energy change indicated the spontaneous nature of the adsorption and negative value of enthalpy change suggested the exothermic nature of the adsorption process. The characterization of the dried plant was studied by using different methods such as; BET method, SEM‐EDX and Elemental analysis techniques. Overall the results of the present study show that C. edulis plant can be successfully used for removal of anionic textile dyes from industry effluents.","PeriodicalId":210076,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Material Sciences & Manufacturing Research","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122028937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, country like Germany has The demand for safe drinking water grows day by day together with the increasing world population. Meanwhile water resources become increasingly scarce, and quality of natural water decreases due to a combination of natural and anthropogenic factors. Industry and agriculture have become a premiere source of hazardous constituents, along with natural processes such as rock weathering and volcanic eruptions. The ability to remove hazardous components, particularly heavy metals from water depends on the selected technology and nature of pollutant. Water purification technologies, mostly involved with sorption and ion-exchange processes, often uses natural iron oxides as ion-exchangers for removal of harmful contaminants from water. These technologies are based on the unique cation-exchange behavior of iron oxides, thus making this sorbent limited to cation removal. Arsenic, copper and nickel are commonly found in water supplies and, therefore, are selected for this study to represent heavy metals in water systems. In this work, hematite nanomaterials were synthesized from the galvanizing effluent collected from the LTL Galvanizers at Makola, Sri Lanka. The industry generates approximately 50 m3 of galvanizing effluent per month and it composes both iron and zinc chlorides. To synthesize pure iron oxide materials, we used the effluents from none re-galvanized chemical baths, which does not contain any zinc chlorides. The synthesized materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Sorption behaviors of As(III), Cu(II) and Ni(II) were examined batch-wise as a function of pH, temperature, contact time, adsorbent dosage and initial metal ion concentration. Residual concentrations of As(III), Cu(II) and Ni(II) in the solution were determined by the inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The adsorption studies were performed by changing one of the conditions while keeping all others fixed. According to the results, maximum percent removals (%) for all metal ions tested were reached within a short period of 30 minutes. In the food industry can be used consumer polymer packaging of various types: hard, semi-hard, soft and others. In order for such packaging to be used for heat sterilization of products, it must have the necessary heat-resistant barrier layer. C-PET packaging is made of heat-resistant barrier material, which ensures its resistance to high temperatures. Therefore, such containers can be used for heat sterilization and guarantee long shelf life of food. Each polymeric material has certain indicators of heat resistance. One of the most problematic places on this issue is the lack of technological parameters of polymer C-PET packaging, such as the strength of the sealing of the package and the parameters of sterilization of packaging with the product for specific thermal equipment: temperature, time, back pressure. Without the values of such characteristics, it is impossible to use containers in food production to produce good quality products for long-term storage. The study used methods such as measuring the sealing strength or depressurization pressure of the container, which occurs during sterilization due to thermal expansion of the product; the standard membrane compensation method was used for this purpose. The development of sterilization regimes for food products was carried out in accordance with the approved regulations. The regulations include analytical calculation of the regime that ensures the production of industrially sterile canned food, laboratory testing of the selected regime and its production testing. Methods of calculating the sterilization regime are based on data on the heat resistance of the strain of microorganisms in the test culture. Studies have been carried out, which resulted in the value of the parameter of sealing strength or depressurization pressure of C-PET containers, without which it is impossible to carry out effective thermal sterilization of the product. Exceeding the required value of this pressure can lead to depressurization of the packaging and the emergence of physical defects, of substandard products. Also, scientifically based high-temperature sterilization regimes for meat and vegetable products in the studied form of polymer consumer packaging have been developed, which will allow companies to produce quality food safe for consumption, with high nutritional value and long shelf life","PeriodicalId":210076,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Material Sciences & Manufacturing Research","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117138974","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The F-114 steel at 850ºC transforms into austenite while the ARMCO iron remains as ferrite. The breakthrough takes place by slow diffusion of the carbon from the F-114 steel into the ferritic ARMCO iron matrix. Following that project and the exploring application of atom energy for peaceful goals using famous Einstein’s theory E=mc^2 has turned a new chapter for nuclear power energy by introducing a new source for electricity production. Fusion nuclear power generation that totally works in opposite direction that of fission nuclear power by splitting atoms nuclei of high Z-materials such as Uranium (U) or Plutonium (Pu), it uses the technology of thermonuclear reaction concepts driven by two isotopes of Hydrogen elements mainly Deuterium (D) and Tritium (T). Recent progress in research towards the development of fusion power driven by means of magnetic confinement approach, using reactor such as Tokamak device and the impressive advances research made in this particular reactor in the past few years, seems very promising to strike break-even of thermonuclear driven fusion reaction taking into consideration approach of Magnetic Confinement Fusion (MCF). Tokamak devices currently under construction will demonstrate the break-even condition or scientific feasibility of fusion power.
