It is uncommon to find an investigation facility, and even less often within fire brigade headquarters, that uses GC-MS and GC-TOF extensively to look for accelerants. During 16 years of intense effort, the Turin Fire Department in Italy accomplished various research projects on the identification of flame accelerants and more in fire residues. This collaborative effort between academics and firefighters is unique. It is based on the perspectives of individuals who often fight fires before going on to investigation. The article will outline the study that was done, explain how advances in instrumentation have produced ever-better outcomes and the next steps in the foreseeable future.","PeriodicalId":20911,"journal":{"name":"Pure and Applied Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2024-06-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141506947","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"化学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, complementary mass spectrometry (MS) based approaches were utilised to determine the spatial metabolomic content of coffee beans, focusing on highlighting those which presented a regiospecific distribution and distinguished the different endosperm regions and the embryo. Preliminary exploration of the spatial metabolome of Coffea arabica coffee beans highlighted tissue-specific molecular features through an unsupervised statistical analysis. Then, the complementary information derived from higher resolution MS approaches resulted in the annotation of 13 metabolites which showed a specific enrichment in at least one tissue, and most of these were noted to be bioactive compounds or aroma/flavour precursors. Knowledge of the tissue distribution of these compounds could shed light on their biological role in plant physiology and bean development, but could also have relevant implications for their positive impact on human health due to coffee consumption as well as their possible effect on aroma and flavour upon roasting of green coffee beans.","PeriodicalId":20911,"journal":{"name":"Pure and Applied Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2024-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141334914","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"化学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The web kapok fibers were carefully processed using a carding technique to ensure better alignment and consistency. Various composite configurations were produced, and extensive mechanical testing was conducted, including flexural, tensile, and impact tests. The results revealed that the presence of two web kapok fiber layers within the composite significantly increased flexural strength and flexural modulus compared to pure fiberglass laminates. However, a single layer of web kapok fabrics exhibited the highest tensile strength, although it decreased with additional layers. The impact strength of these hybrid composites also showed promising results, especially when compared to raw fiberglass composites. Moreover, these composites exhibited improved resistance to water absorption and corrosion, making them potentially suitable for marine applications. This research highlights the potential of web kapok/fiberglass hybrid composites as an eco-friendly alternative for marine engineering, with implications for reduced environmental impact and sustainable technology in the industry.","PeriodicalId":20911,"journal":{"name":"Pure and Applied Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2024-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141334916","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"化学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, Manning’s theory is limited to the case of stretched chains and only takes into account hydrodynamic, electrophoretic and ionic frictions; while scaling approach theories take into account the formation of different types of blobs within the chain but are restricted to hydrodynamic and electrophoretic frictions. In this work, we present a different approach that explains the variation of the equivalent conductivity of polyions having coiled or almost or completely stretched conformations and that takes into account the four frictions. In addition, the introduction of the dielectric friction effect allowed us to interpret the dependency of the equivalent conductivity of a polyion λ P,X on the nature of its counterions X. A likely correlation between this effect and Hofmeister’s is discussed.","PeriodicalId":20911,"journal":{"name":"Pure and Applied Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141347734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"化学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, a good mass expert, provided with a good instrument and an updated library, would be able to answer to the question “what is it?” or “what does it have inside?”. In most of the cases, nevertheless, there is sometimes the need of using other type of techniques in order to avoid misunderstandings and wrong interpretations of the results. Therefore, the aim of this work is to compare real forensic cases where mass spectrometry played a fundamental role to obtain tangible and trustable answers, to other ones where this technique proved to be totally misleading. Those that will be shown, are real, concrete cases – slightly modified in order to make them unrecognisable.","PeriodicalId":20911,"journal":{"name":"Pure and Applied Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2024-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141348349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"化学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Crude oil spilled water purification is a major challenge worldwide. Researchers are focusing on finding adsorbents that improve oil adsorption capability. In the present study the adsorption of crude oil using synthesized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) prepared from coconut shell was investigated by batch adsorption experiments under varying parameters (adsorbent dosage and contact time) after analytical techniques (UV–vis, FTIR and SEM) confirmed the formation of the CNTs. The morphological modification significantly increased the hydrophobicity of the adsorbent, thus creating a synthesized CNTs with a much better adsorption capacity for crude oil removal having a maximum adsorption capacity of 4855.8 mg/g. The experimental results showed that the percentage of crude oil removal increased with an increase in adsorbent dosage and the contact time respectively. According to the correlation coefficient (R 2 = 0.9801) value obtained from the adsorption isotherm investigations, the isotherms were found to fit the Freundlich isotherm somewhat better than the Langmuir isotherm model, which is consistent with the findings reported in the literature. These findings have made the synthesised CNTs an attractive, useful, and environmentally friendly adsorbent for controlling crude oil spill.","PeriodicalId":20911,"journal":{"name":"Pure and Applied Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2024-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141363617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"化学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Diverse strategies have been implemented to curb rampant fungal infections including screening new drugs and stewardship programs. A plethora of recent studies have proved that phytochemicals are efficacious against pathogenic fungi and have potent antifungal activity. This review examines the use of phytochemicals as possible alternative antifungal agents against dermatophytes particularly Trichophyton spp. Literature search was done using three search engines namely Google Scholar, PubMed and Science Direct limited to the year 2019–2023 only. A total of 30 articles were included and 48 plant extracts were evaluated. The major phytochemicals that proved to be potent antifungals both in vitro and in vivo were terpenoids and phenolics. The antifungal potential of phyto-compounds was significantly elevated by incarnation with nanotechnology. Although much has been done in screening of herbal extracts as possible antifungal agents huge gaps still exist on full characterization of all active herbal extracts with antifungal potential especially against resistant strains, together with their mechanism of action, formulation of pharmaceutical dosage forms and clinical trials.","PeriodicalId":20911,"journal":{"name":"Pure and Applied Chemistry","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":1.8,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141382223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"化学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
