ICTs have been supported by governments, private companies, non-governmental organisations, academic institutions and individuals. However, technological changes have made it difficult for ICT stakeholders and policy makers to develop sustainable ICT solutions within the Southern Africa. A qualitative research approach was used to engage ICT experts, ICT designers, ICT users and government representatives to understand the current state of ICTs in Southern Africa. Results indicate that the changes in technologies make it difficult to effectively plan for ICT services delivery. Further findings also indicate the complexity of the needs for ICT users in terms of services, devices and infrastructure make it difficult to plan effectively. More so, there are efforts to plan for ICTs in many countries. The paper outlines an innovative approach that could be adopted by ICT stakeholders and policy makers to come up with an effective ICT strategic plan.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131316801","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An approach to nurture local users to become mentors for colleagues has been developed as an alternative to training courses. A user level plus a mentor level distance learning course were evaluated amongst users of a health information system in Malawi. The user level course was adequate for users with some computer fluency, while IT novices required a mentor present. The mentor level course required the mentors to have higher system competence than most of the relevant users had. An advanced level course between the user and the mentor levels is therefore suggested, in addition to including more practicals and cooperative, reflective components in the mentor course. With such amendments, distance learning courses can replace most face-to-face training courses and training of trainers approaches for implementation of information systems.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133336586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This results in highly mobile, modular and energy efficient technology which can be set up and used anywhere and anytime. We have formed a national partnership for sustainable implementation, comprising a governmental representative, national hospital, national health university department, regional hospitals, Living Labs and NGOs performing community-based rehabilitation. Thereby, we investigate the adaptation, contextualisation and implementation in different rehabilitation methods and centres, including hospitals both in a city centres and in a rural area, NGO's performing community based rehabilitation, and rehabilitation centres. Together, the partners contextualise the eHealth solution to fit the needs in urban, rural and deep rural areas.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"387 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115481046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To address these challenges, new approaches in conducting digital forensic are required. In this paper, challenges that are faced by digital forensic investigator when faced with cloud based incident scenes are presented. The presented challenges are obtained from survey articles that explore outstanding and future challenges in digital forensics in general. In this paper we zoom in into cloud forensics as it is the main focus of the paper. Based on the challenges brought to light by the considered survey articles, we present requirements that should be met by digital forensic systems that aim to investigate cloud environments. Existing architectures and implementations of digital forensic systems are evaluated based on these requirements. Through this evaluation, gaps that are left out by the evaluated architectures are brought to light.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128088441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While there are various factors that can have an impact on business processes adoption, this paper focuses on the impact of individual, process and organisational factors when adopting business processes in a large insurance organisation. Given evidence of non-optimal adoption, this paper investigates the factors that affect the adoption of business process by employees in insurance organisations in the context of Information Technology (IT) software development projects. A case study methodology was used with one large insurance company in South Africa as the unit of analysis. The data collection process started with conducting interviews with eight business process analysts to gain an understanding of how business processes are used in this organisation. This was followed by an online survey targeted at 120 business process users for which 65 responses were received. From the results of this study, a business process adoption (BPA) model has been developed which can be applied to assist an insurance organisation to improve the adoption of its business processes. The factors proposed in the model could guide future initiatives that aim to ensure the success of business processes in organisations.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130408072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One prominent problem is insufficient coordination. Coordination problems are more pronounced when participants are distributed across space and time, as in the South African public sector. The complexity associated with the distributed nature of the environment, heterogeneity, autonomy and the increasing need to collaborate, provokes the need to develop a novel coordination support system for the South African public sector. However, for a solution to be successful, certain requirements, motivated from both literature and the environmental scan of the public sector, conducted as a case study, must be adequately addressed. This paper argues that the mechanisms of an awareness based life-cycle model, characterised by virtual community properties from a collaboration perspective, can adequately account for the dynamic aspects of the coordination requirements in a distributed environment. The paper initiates with a brief introduction, succeeded with a review of the objectives and methodology employed. Next, a brief background relative to the requirements to be fulfilled and the desirable characteristics of the addressing model is explained. Thereafter, a discussion on how the model addresses the requirements ensues, followed by a discussion thereof. The paper concludes by highlighting the values, and limits of the artefact, while taking cognisance of subsequent, future work.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127730553","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These activities can range from scientific problems to menial tasks that are sometimes too mundane for employees. A lot of organisations in different countries have adopted and embraced this phenomenon with gusto. South Africa being the African continent's most developed economy is also embracing crowdsourcing. However, the adoption of crowdsourcing initiatives has been slow, especially amongst public organisations, due to various reasons, such as lack of awareness. This research paper reports on the investigation conducted pertaining to the adoption of crowdsourcing platforms in South Africa. The primary research methods used for the study included a systematic literature review and document analysis. The results from the study suggest that the most prominent crowdsourcing platforms in South Africa deal with funding. However, there is still a lack of information pertaining to the status and number of users benefiting from the adopted and/or deployed platforms.","PeriodicalId":208344,"journal":{"name":"2015 IST-Africa Conference","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132834269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
