The numerical wave models express the physical concepts of the phenomena. The performance of the numerical wave model depends on how best the phenomena are expressed into the numerical schemes, so that more accurate wave parameters could be estimated. There are still scopes for improving the numerical wave models. When exact input-output parameters are known for the same phenomenon, it can be well de- fined by the neural network. Hindcasting of ocean wave parameters using neural networks shows its potential usefulness. It is observed that the short-term wave predictions using neural networks are very close to the actual ones. It is also ob- served that the neural network simplifies not only the complex phenomena, but also predicts fairly accurate wave parame- ters.","PeriodicalId":206173,"journal":{"name":"The Open Ocean Engineering Journal","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133545768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A data program has been written that scans the acoustic signals for echo peaks and classify these into echo traces. The program counts the number of echo traces from fish that cross the beam within given distances from the acoustic axis over a known sailing distance, and gives an absolute estimate of fish density. This is ob- tained by using the off acoustic axis angles of fish that generate resolved echoes to compute the athwartship distance from the vertical acoustic axis to the fish. The program is described and demonstrated on selected files of raw data recorded by the SIMRAD EK 60 split beam system. Estimated fish densities for these files are also obtained by the echo integration method, and the echo trace method gives estimates that agree well with these estimates under sufficiently \"good condi- tions\".","PeriodicalId":206173,"journal":{"name":"The Open Ocean Engineering Journal","volume":"05 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127283920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recognizing the existence of a free-surface for the water column, the interface position between the trapped-air and water volume -together with the motion of the column-, is described by a non-linear energy equation that reflects the main dynamic characteristics. The above governing equation is posed in dimensionless form and solved by conventional numerical methods. In addition, a theoretical approximation of the first order in  to predict the resonant frequency of the oscillatory system is derived to complete the analysis. The numerical results of the above governing equation serve us to estimate the dimensionless work done by the oscillating water column as a function of three dimensionless parameters: a characteristic Froude number, , and two equivalent quasi-geometric parameters,  and  , defined below. The predictions show that the influence of the geometry and the involved physical parameters exert a great influence on work generation into the air-chamber.","PeriodicalId":206173,"journal":{"name":"The Open Ocean Engineering Journal","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133860502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A simplified theoretical model to calculate these dynamic burst time and pressure of cy- lindrical shells has been developed and the results are compared with finite element analysis (FEA) results via the use of the LS-DYNA code (1). Based on the agreement between the two results, it can be concluded that a properly formulated simplified theoretical model can be employed with sufficient accuracy to determine the short-term dynamic burst pres- sures of metal cylinders. In the 1950's, Cooper (2) developed an analytical equa- tion to predict the static burst pressure for cylinders made of an isotropic ductile material. This equation provided the de- sired relationship between the burst pressure, material char- acteristics, original dimensions, and ultimate tensile strength of the material. At the same time, Svensson (3) derived a solution of the burst pressure for an arbitrary thick end- capped pipe based on the von-Mises yield criterion. Tadmor et al. (4) developed an analytical expression of the burst pressure of multilayered cylinders. They performed a large strain analysis, taking into consideration the elastic-plastic deformation with the Hill yield function and arbitrary hard- ening. An overall effective modulus was used to determine the onset of bursting, and they then derived the relations for thin-walled cylinders with the neglect of the elastic strains. Klever (5) presented an analytical model to determine the burst strength of the thin-wall uncorroded and corroded pipe- lines. The model results compared well with those of an un- corroded pipe test. (6) re-examined the funda- mental relationships that govern the equilibrium and stability","PeriodicalId":206173,"journal":{"name":"The Open Ocean Engineering Journal","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127232087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the experiments, the display of a non-intrusive stereo imaging measurement of the three-dimensional net geometry was established by tracing the positions of the LED markers on the cage net. A 1/30-scale model of a net cage was used composing of top and bottom hoops (or rings), nets, four buoys and four anchor blocks moored to the tank bottom. Trinocular stereo imaging, which used three synchronized video cameras to follow the three-dimensional displacements of 37 Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) attached to the net, was em- ployed to monitor the deformation and motion of the fish net. The motion of the collar and bottom hoop under different current velocities was also observed and is discussed in this paper. This measurement method offers more convenience and detail about deformation and motion investigation of a flexible net structure.","PeriodicalId":206173,"journal":{"name":"The Open Ocean Engineering Journal","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115339396","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper discusses an application of different artificial intelligent tools for this purpose. The physical domain where the wave forecasting is made belongs to the western part of the Indian coastline in Arabian Sea. The tools used are artificial neural networks, ge- netic programming and model trees. Station specific forecasts are made at those locations where wave data are continu- ously observed. A time series forecasting scheme is employed. Based on a sequence of preceding observations forecasts are made over lead times of 3 hr to 72 hr. Large differences in the accuracy of the forecasts were not seen when alternative forecasting tools were employed and hence the user is free to use any one of them as per her convenience and confidence. A graphical user interface has been developed that operates on the received wave height data from the field and produces the forecasts and further makes them accessible to any user located anywhere in the world.","PeriodicalId":206173,"journal":{"name":"The Open Ocean Engineering Journal","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-08-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125949017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The wind and wave hindcast was carried out using an improved version of the SKIRON-Eta atmospheric model and the WAM-cycle 4 wave model with a high spatial resolution of 0.1ox0.1o and a model time step of 3 hours, in order to resolve efficiently offshore wind and wave conditions. The results cover the period 1995-2004 and are presented in the form of charts of the spatial distribution of specific wind and wave parameters as well as frequency histograms, on a sea- sonal and annual basis. The hindcast data were calibrated by means of measured wind and wave data from the POSEI- DON buoy network. Based on the calibrated hindcast results, a description of the main characteristics of the wind and wave climate of the Hellenic Seas is being attempted, while the corresponding dominant features are revealed and repre- sented as precisely as possible.","PeriodicalId":206173,"journal":{"name":"The Open Ocean Engineering Journal","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131895791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effects of sand density on the bearing capacity are also investigated. It is shown that, under combined loading, the load conditions under which a foundation fails form a failure locus. The horizontal bearing capacity increases with the increase of the vertical loading if the latter is below a critical value. But the horizontal bearing capacity decreases when it exceeds the critical value. The bearing capacity increases with the increase of the sand density in the range of the experiments in this paper. For the same bucket diam, the horizontal bearing capacity increases with the aspect ratio (H/D). The vertical bearing capacity is influenced by the aspect ratio and the ratio of the height of the sand bed to that of the bucket.","PeriodicalId":206173,"journal":{"name":"The Open Ocean Engineering Journal","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116298575","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
