Four main stereotypes of Asians and Asian Americans emerged from the imagination of primarily white cultural producers in Hollywood: “Yellow Peril,” “Dragon Lady,” “Charlie Chan,” and “Lotus Blossom.” These images can be understood as “controlling images” in the sense that negative stereotypes provide justifications for social control and positive stereotypes provide normative models for Asian thought and behavior. Resistance to these images became substantial in the 1960s when Asian American filmmakers developed “triangular cinema,” a strategy for Asian American community building, political mobilization, and the creation of an Asian American film aesthetic. The films of triangular cinema are “liberating images” that stake out a position for independence and autonomy for Asian American communities.","PeriodicalId":206087,"journal":{"name":"Simile: Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116500286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eliot's concept of the “objective correlative.” Specifically, it links products and services to desirable states, traits, and emotions. With the recent series of ads for Absolut Vodka, this linkage has become more attenuated and, at times, literally absent in the traditional sense. The logical development of this tendency is seen in the television commercials for AFLAC supplemental insurance, featuring the “AFLAC duck,” where the overt connection is completely severed and a new relationship and communication technique replaces the objective correlative - which is here termed the “subjective correlative.”","PeriodicalId":206087,"journal":{"name":"Simile: Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education","volume":"173 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133226292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Internet users have little reason to seek out a television web site for more information about stories because, in many cases, the web site provides less information than the on-air story. Text-only stories are the most common. Only 36.5% of sites used video. Almost 55% of the television stations did not have additional information about on-air stories on their site. Links to different resources that would add to on-air news information were found on 43% of sampled sites. Network affiliation was a factor in the type of information included online. CBS affiliates were more likely to provide more information on their web sites than other affiliates. Market size had little impact on the type of information found on television station web sites.","PeriodicalId":206087,"journal":{"name":"Simile: Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-08-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126314054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Beginning in the twelfth century, the Anglo-Norman conquerors of Ireland had relied on stereotypes of the Irish in order to justify governance of them. Introduced in Season 1 of Buffy , the vampire Angel embodies the major cultural stereotypes used by English colonizers to represent their Irish conquests. The English vampire Spike, introduced in Season 2, also embodies various cultural stereotypes of the English. The subsequent rivalry between Angel and Spike draws on aspects of the Celt/Saxon dichotomy, which was developed during the Victorian era at the height of British colonization to reinforce British claims to power.","PeriodicalId":206087,"journal":{"name":"Simile: Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130406097","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article explores how the meaning-expressive potential of the lexical and pictorial forms of signification are defined on multiple levels. Semiotics provides a theoretical and methodological framework for isolating and explaining the levels of meaning, both of language as text and the image as pictorial text. This article highlights some philosophical and theoretical implications of semiotics, language, meaning-making, and pictorial text with a view towards the development of a viable semiotic methodology for analyzing pictorial text. Pablo Picasso's Guernica is used as an example of how signification works on multiple levels.","PeriodicalId":206087,"journal":{"name":"Simile: Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education","volume":"153 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129699393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even so, scholars are only beginning to understand “how” viewers cognitively construct meanings from program content–a prerequisite step for media effects. This study reports a detailed analysis of the essays viewers wrote in response to an open-ended question about an episode of television conflict. Results showed two interpretive frames guided sense-making. These frames were linked to the viewer's own family communication patterns supporting the notion that different family communication schemata promote alternative orientations toward cognitive processing. In addition, three levels of elaboration about key program ideas demonstrated that different semantic structures underlie viewer interpretations. Suggestions are offered to guide future research and teaching about critical thinking and sense-making processes.","PeriodicalId":206087,"journal":{"name":"Simile: Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131446303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This multiplicity of options is the result of the easily available resources made possible by the Web, as well as the latest advances in supersymmetrical physics. Moreover, these new discoveries, taken together with the worldviews such discoveries engender, are connected with Nietzsche's ideas about eternal recurrence and to the cyclical vision of the world first envisioned in Hindu philosophy.","PeriodicalId":206087,"journal":{"name":"Simile: Studies in Media & Information Literacy Education","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121725559","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
