Many of its applications have been settled through stem cell research in order to develop innovative stimuli to differentiate the cells into a specific lineage via physical stimulation such as thermal, mechanical or electrical stimuli to avoid the use of biochemical products. Many examples are found in literature, however none of them could provide conclusive answers in this research field. Piezoelectric materials are able to combine mechanical and electrical stimulation. Environments mimicking in vivo conditions are supposed to be the best to induce differentiation process, but these mechanisms are still not fully mastered and very much dependent on cell type. In this poster, we will introduce the experimental setup used to study the effects of physical (i.e. electrical and/or mechanical) stimulation on human mesenchymal stem cells. An overview of the thought process leading to our project is exposed, as well as a brief bibliographical study of electrical stimulation effects on cells. The emphasis will be focused on the piezoelectric materials used in this project. We selected a nanocomposite material, a copolymer P(VDF-TrFE) matrix charged with ZnO nanoparticles, in order to modulate the mechanical and piezoelectric properties of the matrix as well as to provide a better sticking surface favouring cell adhesion.","PeriodicalId":20497,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ISAF-ECAPD-PFM 2012","volume":"32 1","pages":"1-2"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87924038","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The transition from cubic to orthorhombic phase was found to be shifted downwards by ~50 K in comparison with that reported for single crystals. Below 150 K four relaxation processes were revealed and characterized. A broad specific heat anomaly with maximum at 18K, similar to that reported for single crystals was observed. Small magnetic hysteresis loop observed for the ceramics at 4 K can be due to defects introduced in the process of mechanical synthesis.","PeriodicalId":20497,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ISAF-ECAPD-PFM 2012","volume":"29 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88111083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, the rectifier circuit and array configuration are considered. It is shown that rectifying the signal from each piezoelectric module separately generates more energy and charges a capacitor faster than using a single rectifier for all modules connected in series. In addition, the array can be designed such that the modules are impacted simultaneously or sequentially with a phase difference. We show that the latter allows faster energy harvesting. These results could be used in the design of efficient impact-based PEH system.","PeriodicalId":20497,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ISAF-ECAPD-PFM 2012","volume":"45 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79847699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is of interest to investigate the influence of field-driven rhombohedral-tetragonal phase transitions across the MPB, to determine whether correctly oriented BFPT can provide both giant piezoelectric properties and significant magnetoelectric coupling. Here, we used the reactive templated grain growth (RTGG) technique to prepare crystallographically textured 0.6BiFeO<sub>3</sub>-0.4PbTiO<sub>3</sub> (60:40 BFPT) ceramics. Both Aurivillius structure templates (Bi<sub>4</sub>Ti<sub>3</sub>O<sub>12</sub> and PbBi<sub>4</sub>Ti<sub>4</sub>O<sub>15</sub>) and perovskite templates (BaTiO<sub>3</sub> and SrTiO<sub>3</sub>) were used to prepare textured 60:40BFPT. Synchrotron radiation experiments were used to determine the degree of texture. A current data suggests that only BaTiO<sub>3</sub> templates survive the sintering process, and other candidate template materials reacted with the 60:40BFPT matrix at high temperature. In the case of SrTiO<sub>3</sub>, this reaction results in a low Curie temperature (T<sub>c</sub> = 350°C) due to the substitution of Sr<sup>2+</sup>. Aurivillius templates resulted in high Curie temperatures (610°C) and may be chemically suitable if they could be stabilized during the sintering process. However, the resulting ceramics show low remanent polarization (P<sub>r</sub> = 3 μc/cm<sup>2</sup>), while SrTiO<sub>3</sub> and BaTiO<sub>3</sub> templated ceramics show higher remanent polarizations of 36 and 30 μc/cm<sup>2</sup>, respectively. Because of their high chemical stability in this system, BaTiO<sub>3</sub> templates appear to be the best candidate for fabricating textured BFPT by the TGG method, displaying a high degree of crystallographic texture.","PeriodicalId":20497,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ISAF-ECAPD-PFM 2012","volume":"44 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84120142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A permanent magnet (10 × 10 × 5 mm3) was attached to the free end of a cantilever beam, and a permanent magnet was attached to each of the four faces of a rotor at 90° angles. The effect of the size of the permanent magnets (40 × 20 × 10 mm3, 30 × 20 × 10 mm3, and 20 × 20 × 10 mm3) and the effect of the pole array distribution (NNNN, SSSS, NSNS, and NNSS) were experimentally investigated. The optimum conditions were determined by testing various distances between the magnets at different rpm's. The experiments showed that the maximum output power was generated for the minimum distance and largest magnet. The most effective approach to adjust the resonance frequency was to change the pole arrays of the magnets attached to the rotor. Furthermore, the optimum conditions were determined at each distance by changing the pole array and rpm. Software simulations support the experimental results.","PeriodicalId":20497,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ISAF-ECAPD-PFM 2012","volume":"15 1","pages":"1-4"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84394199","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
