A small branch angle θ will cause the Y-branch to perform as a mode splitter. Two asymmetric arms, differing either in the geometric shape or refractive index, will yield two intersecting waveguide dispersion curves between the two wavelengths to be demultiplexed. The intersection is designed to be between λ2 = 1.31μm and λ1 = 1.55μm as shown in Fig.2. Thus, the effective index of arm 1 will be higher than that of arm 2 at λ1 = 1.55μm and lower at λ2 = 1.31μm. The waves at λ1 and λ2 from the main branch can then be separated into arm 1 and arm 2, respectively [2]. Generally, the stronger asymmetric two branch arms are, the higher will be the extinction ratios, which are defined as the ratios of the output power from the two arms.","PeriodicalId":203841,"journal":{"name":"Gradient Index Optical Systems","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134044436","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is therefore necessary to choose a schematic eye model that successfully describes the optical properties of the interior of the lens in order to accurately determine the dimensions of its posterior surface. For simplicity the schematic eye models often assume that the refractive index of the lens is constant, although it is known to have a gradient of refractive index1. Evaluation of the resulting errors in calculations of the posterior lens surface dimensions have not previously been published. It will be shown that the gradient can have a profound effect on the image of the posterior lens surface of the lens in the Cichlid fish. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of simplistic models on the calculations of the position, radius of curvature, and shape of the posterior lens surface in humans.","PeriodicalId":203841,"journal":{"name":"Gradient Index Optical Systems","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123886393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Devices produced by this technique are index compatible with silica fibers, and as a result, this technology has received considerable attention as a means of producing low-insertion loss integrated optic devices for use in fiber communications networks.1 Accurate design of such devices, generally comprised of one or more channel waveguides, requires a thorough characterization of the waveguide-forming process. Although planar K+-Na+ IEP waveguides have been studied extensively2, to date however, only limited characterization of channel waveguides has been performed.","PeriodicalId":203841,"journal":{"name":"Gradient Index Optical Systems","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131939600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For accurate designs, detailed information on the characteristics of slab and channel guides made in glass substrates must be known in relation to their fabrication conditions since these waveguides often form the basic units in more complicated waveguide structures used in devices. This paper will outline the characterization and modelling procedures of such waveguides, and present the methodology of design optimization of waveguide devices. In particular, the beam propagation method (BPM) combined with the effective index method (EIM) will be discussed. Illustrative examples will be given on power dividers, wavelength multi/demultiplexers and vertical directional couplers made by K+-ion exchange in glass. Comparisons between the measured performance figures of fabricated devices and design predictions will be presented.","PeriodicalId":203841,"journal":{"name":"Gradient Index Optical Systems","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121731654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the individual alignment of optical components for high efficiency optical coupling needs precise adjustment, and several authors have reported on integrated couplers [1] [2].
