Technical characteristics of FTOHBR-150200/35 transformers installed at 180 ton electric arc furnaces (EAF-180) of the electric steelmaking shop, OJSC “Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works”, are given. The authors considered the technological functions fulfilled by the system of technical state control. They described the operational diagram and the diagnostic TDMS system introduced at the EAF-180 No 1 and No 2 of the electric steelmaking shop. The advantages of the module structure are explained. The authors offer an example of time charts of recorded parameters and the screen view of generalized diagnostic characteristics. The development of the new design was necessary, because the operating range of speed and torque are different from commercial machines for industrial applications. In addition, to deal with the unique requirements of an electric drive for use in a maritime high speed vessel, features like high power density, compact construction volume, light weighted structure, water cooling and high overload capacity were implemented. Because testing the drive system and measuring reliable data on water is very problematic, a Test Bench was established. To simulate realistic conditions within the complete projected operating range a Hydrodynamic Brake system was used as load machine. These controllers are connected in cascade in the feedforward, the first is used for speed control, the second is used for rotor flux control and the third is dedicated for current control. The validity of the proposed system has been demonstrated through computer simulations. A comparison between the proposed system and PI control has been offered. The results obtained have confirmed that the proposed system is effective and robust against load disturbance.
