The aim is to measure all the joint accelerations of the locomotion system during the walking that is difficult because of the non-accessibility of several joint axes. Our measurement approach is non-direct using two triaxial accelerometers aligned on the main axis of each body, that ensures measurement of five accelerations per joint, two angular and three linear. By considering negligible the vertical rotation of a leg in the absolute frame during walking, the vertical rotational acceleration of the hip is measurable by two accelerometers aligned along the sagittal axis. For tibia and thigh, the accelerometers are aligned along vertical axes. The calculation of accelerations in articulation references is achieved by solving a system of Newton mechanics equations. The theoretical statements were validated experimentally on the robot for vertical flexion-extension movement.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133865347","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The architecture makes use of two resistive layers of opposite temperature coefficients, both being available in the CMOS process. In order to tackle power consumption issues, usually related to resistive transduction and Wheatstone bridge conditioners, resistors are here placed in an original stage featuring gain even at very low-biasing current (2µA in this case). This analog front-end is used into a 1st order ΣΔ modulator, providing a digital output (i.e. a bitstream) with little additional silicon surface. The paper describes the design of the circuit and provides both simulation and experimental results. Experimental data are obtained from silicon prototypes, over a - 40°C to 100°C temperature range. High resolution (below 0.1°C) is observed.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134367540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The absorption-coefficient of blood differs at different wavelengths. This fact is used to calculate the optical absorbability characteristics of blood which is yielding information about blood components like hemoglobin (Hb) and arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2). The measured PPG time signals and the ratio between the peak to peak pulse amplitudes are used for a calculation of these parameters. The newly developed optical sensor systems use up to five wavelengths in the range of 600nm to 1400nm for a measurement of the hemoglobin concentration, oxygen saturation and pulse. This noninvasive multi-spectral measurement method was tested with prototype-devices based on radiation of monochromatic light emitted by laser diodes and by using light emitting diodes (LED) through an area of skin on the finger. The sensors assembled in this investigation are fully integrated into wearable finger clips.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131511713","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, the prototype consists of a grid of 48 FBG elements, arranged in a 6-by-8 matrix way, and embedded in a 2 mm thick UV-cured polymer sheet, with a spatial resolution of 10 mm. FBGs inscribed in highly-birefringent bow-tie fibres are specifically employed in this work as the sensing elements. By means of a FBG interrogator and an optical switch, individual sensors are characterized to assess their sensing performance and to determine the pressure sensitivity. A linear pressure sensitivity up to 1.754 pm/kPa is registered based on Bragg peak shifting. Accordingly, the capability of the device for pressure mapping is tested and demonstrated by post-processing and interrogation of the acquired sensor data.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131554318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It utilizes magnetic spring technique to scavenge energy from low frequency external vibration. The optimization of generator is done in two stages. First, ANSYS simulation is used to reduce the nonlinear behavior of flux density and to maximize the output voltage of generator by optimizing size of moving and fixed magnets. Second, the coil width, coil position and load resistance are optimized experimentally to maximize output power. The optimized energy harvester can generate 1.18 mW power at a load resistance of 97 Ω with 9 Hz resonance frequency and 0.5 mm of displacement.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"90 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132785408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sensors were tested against various concentrations of H2S gas at the operating temperature between 150 and 350 °C. It was observed that Ir was very sensitive and selective to H2S at 350 °C. In fact, detection of emitted acoustic waves could lead to micron-scale resolution imaging and early diagnosis of tumor masses. Nonetheless, until now, no relevant studies have assessed the optoacoustic behavior of AuNRs under repeatable experimental conditions. A new experimental set-up including a novel custom-designed tissue-mimicking phantom was developed for this study, in order to quantify the contribution of independent parameters to the optoacoustic signal (OAS) produced by AuNRs. Analysis of the OAS recorded by 2 US probes demonstrated a direct proportionality between signal amplitude and both AuNR concentration and laser intensity. Moreover, the optimal and maximum duration of laser exposure were determined through a quantitative analysis of progressive degradation of AuNRs under irradiation.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"47 8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130817409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Beyond the conventional finger-type electrodes, the stack electrodes formed from the inter metal layers of CMOS process provide a lower resistance contact with the sensing material. The proposed gas sensor was built with array of floating membranes and serially connected over an etched cavity. A micro heater of n-type polysilicon with 5.81 kΩ is situated beneath each active area of the membrane to obtain a stable working temperature with several power consumptions conditions. The sensing material SnO2 for CO detection was deposited onto the stack electrodes after sol-gel formation with deionized water and ammonia (NH3) to promote the hydrolysis and condensation. After the sensor fabricated, a test wire-bond and TO-5 package was performed and the sample was test and verified inside a CO gas chamber. With careful investigation of measurement results, the sensitivity of proposed monoxide sensor is 6.25%/ppm without heating and the sensitivity reaches to 15.7%/ppm under 172 µW heating power which is highly beyond the result of previous research work. The experimental measurement shows the research is applicable for a low cost CO sensor with high sensitivity.","PeriodicalId":201386,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE SENSORS Proceedings","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130741756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The presented µCVG design ensures a high mechanical coupling between one single driving mode and each one of the 3 sensing modes when the structure is subjected to Coriolis acceleration, with limited mechanical cross-coupling between vibration modes. The structure is made of a semi-conducting material with a cubic lattice, such as Silicon (Si) or Gallium Arsenide (GaAs).
