Many institutional research offices primarily focus on traditional statistical and analytical tools to provide data for assessing, developing, or modifying institutional policies. However, by adding an additional facet such as location, more in depth analysis can be provided on a wide array of research topics. The article focuses on how the Office of Strategic Planning and Analysis utilizes Geospatial Information Systems GIS for a wide array of tasks. GIS is used currently by the department for facility information, tracking logistics through the university, benchmarking and for operational information for the university. In addition GIS can be used for admissions and recruiting, alumni giving, emergency management as well as homeland security purposes. In this article the requirements for using GIS in an institutional research or strategic planning office is addressed as well as some pitfalls and advantages to using such applications to perform institutional research in addition to providing data that can be used for institutional operations.","PeriodicalId":201145,"journal":{"name":"Int. Use of existing and newly developed virtual worlds is expected to grow for the near future. International companies are entering a variety of virtual worlds to promote collaboration among their geographically dispersed workforce for training and meetings, as well as for business-to-business and business-to-consumer applications with internal and external audiences. These worlds provide engaging experiences that can be enjoyable and memorable. This article addresses opportunities and challenges in conducting meetings in virtual worlds. It covers the evolution of technology for virtual meetings, a theoretical analysis of technology acceptance, case studies on organizations utilizing virtual worlds, and practical considerations for conducting virtual meetings and events.","PeriodicalId":201145,"journal":{"name":"Int. A proper blend of statistical modeling, deterministic optimization, heuristic scheduling procedures, and computer simulation enables the strategic design of such systems while anticipating the complexity of operations. Performance on multiple dimensions may be investigated for alternative physical configurations and operating procedures while accommodating time-varying mixes of traffic and demands for service. This paper illustrates the blending of analytical tools for an inland waterway transportation service system where staged queues provide the conceptual foundation for operations, and it advocates the use of similar modeling approaches for the strategic design and management of other service systems. For airline traffic at a major commercial airport, where systems of staged queues need to be integrated for optimizing flight and ground operations, the authors suggest the data and analytical models that may be deployed in this more complex environment.","PeriodicalId":201145,"journal":{"name":"Int. However, not as much effort has been put into determining the actual use of those tools. This research examines what tools and procedures are actually being utilized in the creation of information systems in industry. Utilizing semi-structured interviews, a much different view of systems design procedures emerges than what students are led to believe are actually used. The prevalence of \"home-grown\" processes, or sometimes no definable processes at all, can have a serious impact on employee productivity and, ultimately, a system's ability to fulfill its strategic objectives.","PeriodicalId":201145,"journal":{"name":"Int. The goal of the study was to identify suitable leadership approaches, core and enabling technologies that are of importance for airline executives in the context of the global nature of the industry and its challenging, competitive environment. Conducting interviews with former executives from Continental Airlines and Lufthansa German Airlines and with C-level managers from airlines unaffiliated with these carriers provided insights concerning adequate methods to lead airlines that experience operational, organizational, or financial crises. One of the findings of the study, which was conducted by evaluating successful crisis management programs of Lufthansa and Continental Airlines, is the need to integrate both core and enabling technologies with a leadership approach that allows organizations to outperform their competitors and, more importantly, maintain their leading position.","PeriodicalId":201145,"journal":{"name":"Int. Education is important for both-developed and developing economies-for the former to maintain their lead position and for the latter to ensure decent livelihood and utilization of natural resources. In such a situation, education needs to continuously upgrade itself to meet the ever changing needs of the economy, society and mankind. Hence, understanding education reviewing the developments, methods and standards are important if all stakeholders have to be satisfied. With globalization of education and the bent towards professional courses, Distance Education DE is established and is being more and more sought after. However, adopting academic strategies which will have mutual recognition across the world ensure holistic development and aid to maintain standards and quality of DE, is crucial need of the hour. The proposed paper aims to address these issues.","PeriodicalId":201145,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Strateg. Inf. Technol. In this paper, the role of knowledge management strategy KMS in strategic alliances is analyzed in a technology-intensive company. The importance of alliances for technological companies and the necessity of designing suitable KMSs in alliances -in terms of objectives and goals, knowledge management tools, and support systems-are explained first of all. Moreover, the analysis of a case study of KMS in the strategic alliances of a company currently developing different businesses in technological settings is developed by the authors. Finally, several conclusions are discussed, based on how the implementation aspects concerning KMS in strategic alliances have been managed and the way they have contributed to the attainment of the company's objectives and goals.","PeriodicalId":201145,"journal":{"name":"Int. Globally scattered network systems and on-demand access to systems such as cloud computing require a high level of security, because the software and hardware of networks are integrated in vulnerable shared or outsourced environments. Hackers are relentless in finding new techniques to gain access to sensitive data. Securing infrastructures is a challenging task, but when researchers identify and investigate potential threats and create solutions, vulnerabilities may be reduced. The purpose of this paper is to explore how use, misuse, positive and negative, obstacle, and abuse testing cases of firewalls have broadened the security policies that mitigate or prevent threats in a cloud environment.","PeriodicalId":201145,"journal":{"name":"Int. The objective of BI is to use data analysis as a competitive weapon, deeply integrated into business processes. The ability of an organization to provide enterprise-level BI services depends heavily on its IT strategy, itself a function of existing technology investment. Previous research has described four IT architecture stages ranging from isolated applications to modular services, each with increasing complexity and service capabilities. Representatives from four companies were interviewed about the status of their BI activities, and the resulting data helps identify common barriers faced by these organizations in the provisioning of enterprise-level BI services. Interview results also describe the success of a limited-scope operational BI system by one of these firms, and the role of semantic data exchange technologies, primarily XML, in this system.","PeriodicalId":201145,"journal":{"name":"Int.
