Although the model does not exhibit any thermodynamic transition it shows a diverging peak at some characteristic time in the dynamical nonlinear susceptibility, similar to the results on the p-spin model in mean field and the Lennard-Jones mixture recently found by Donati et al. (e-print cond-mat/9905433). Comparing these results to those obtained in the model with quenched interactions, we conclude that the critical behavior of the dynamical susceptibility is reminiscent of the thermodynamic transition present in the quenched model, and signaled by the divergence of the static nonlinear susceptibility, suggesting therefore a similar mechanism also in supercooled glass-forming liquids.
","PeriodicalId":20079,"journal":{"name":"Physical review. The presence of mobile particles under the surface-particle interaction modulation breaks the isotropy of the bulk phase-separating process, leading to the formation of orientational structure due to the interplay between phase separation and wetting particle ordering under a modulated pinning potential at the late stage. Simulations suggest that the phase-separation morphology can be changed through the adjustment of the wettable-phase-particle interaction and the surface-particle interaction. We find P(e) and P(T) to be power laws, consistent with self-organized criticality (SOC). Effective viscosity of dense colloidal crystals 致密胶体晶体的有效粘度

{"title":"Effective viscosity of dense colloidal crystals","authors":"Hofman, Clercx, Schram","doi":"10.1103/physreve.62.8212","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1103/physreve.62.8212","url":null,"abstract":"

An exact scheme is presented to determine the effective viscosity tensor for periodic arrays of hard spherical particles suspended in a Newtonian fluid. In the highly symmetric case of cubic lattices this tensor is characterized by only two parameters. These parameters are calculated numerically for the three cubic lattice types and for the whole range of volume fractions. The correctness of the present method and its numerical implementation is confirmed by a comparison with the numerical and analytical results known from the literature. Some regular terms are determined that enter singular perturbation expansions suitable for high concentrations. Previous results for these terms are shown to be highly inaccurate. The modified expansions approach the exact numerical results over a range of densities extending to relatively low concentrations. The effective viscosity is examined for simple tetragonal (st) lattices and the results for various structures of the st type can be qualitatively understood on the basis of the motion of the spheres in response to the ambient shear flow. The angular velocity of the spheres-relative to the shear flow-is shown to be nonzero for certain orientations of the st lattice with respect to the shear flow, in contrast to what has been known for cubic arrays. Finite viscosities are found in most cases where the particles are in contact as they are allowed to move in either rigid planar or linelike structures, or they can perform a smooth rolling motion. The only occurrence where the viscosity diverges for a st structure, or equally any other Bravais lattice, is for the case of close packing. Moreover, the concentration-dependent shear viscosity is determined for a variety of microstructures and the results are compared with recent data obtained from experiments on ordered hard-sphere suspensions.
","PeriodicalId":20079,"journal":{"name":"Physical review. At rest, this system develops weakly bound superstructures that are disrupted by mechanical stirring or thermal treatment. The observed relaxation rates correspond to a combination of liquidlike diffusion and a structural relaxation (flocculation) whereby the diffusing silica aggregates recombine into larger agglomerates at long times. Both processes are diffusion controlled. Two samples are investigated. The first, in which the silica is hydrophilic, is a highly viscous liquid for which the respective rate coefficients are about 5x10(-14) cm(2) s(-1) and 2x10(-15) cm(2) s(-1). The second sample, in which the silica surface is hydrophobic, is a thixotropic paste. Chem. Phys. 65, 3968 (1976)], behaves as a weakly correlated \"mean-field fluid\" over a surprisingly wide density and temperature range. In the bulk, the structure of the fluid phase is accurately described by the random phase approximation for the direct correlation function, and by the more sophisticated hypernetted chain integral equation. The resulting pressure deviates very little from a simple mean-field-like quadratic form in the density, while the low density virial expansion turns out to have an extremely small radius of convergence. Density profiles near a hard wall are also very accurately described by the corresponding mean-field free-energy functional. The binary version of the model exhibits a spinodal instability against demixing at high densities. Possible implications for semidilute polymer solutions are discussed.
","PeriodicalId":20079,"journal":{"name":"Physical review. This allows for a comparison between RG results and corresponding self-organized critical models. However, close to the critical point, scaling functions cross over to forms that can have singular behavior not seen in equilibrium thermal phase transitions. These can be different for the constant force and constant velocity driving modes, leading to different apparent critical exponents. This is illustrated by comparing extremal dynamics for interface depinning with RG results, deriving the change in apparent exponents. Thus, care has to be exercised in such comparisons.
","PeriodicalId":20079,"journal":{"name":"Physical review.
