In order to understand the electrical characteristics of insulation operating rods the tests are made on the influence of connection methods of operating rods on the electrical characteristics and improving the distribution of the electric field to increase the discharge voltage. A limitation of most of these studies, however, is the inaccurate assessment of historical exposure to magnetic fields. This paper describes the preliminary results of a study conducted by Eskom to assess the historical magnetic field dosages received by the members of one of Eskom's live line maintenance teams during typical working conditions. The assessment involves incorporation of magnetic field dosage measurements with the information obtained from the live line log sheets kept by the live line workers. The study indicated that the annual magnetic field dosages received by the live line workers range between 0,65 mT.h/year and 40,83 mT.h/year with a mean of 20,37 mT/year. The approach followed can effectively be applied in the design of epidemiological studies focusing on live line maintenance.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":198668,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ESMO '93. Dry ice (CO/sub 2/) pellets are a natural fire extinguisher and exhibit a dielectric strength approximately equal to that of air (30 kV/cm). The pellets disappear instantly on contact, so there is no secondary waste stream to create environmental costs and concerns. In order to determine the effect of such exposure, high-voltage laboratory tests were performed to evaluate the maximum leakage-current on the hot stick surface. A test program was set up in which the hot sticks were exposed to atmospheric pollution at two Hydro-Quebec substations and tested at the IREQ HV laboratory. The tests included salt deposit density (SDD) measurements, leakage-current measurements during high-voltage tests, flashover tests, resistivity measurements of collected-water, etc. The results identified several parameters describing the relative pollution level at each substation. A specific high-voltage leakage-current test highlighted two interesting aspects: the maximum RMS alternating current, under a specific set of parameters (e.g. hot stick test length of 1 m, test voltage of 30 kV, salt fog resistivity of 30 /spl Omega/.M), combined with the deposit of natural atmospheric pollution on the hot-stick surface; the behavior of hot-stick fiberglass treated with silicone or wax, exposed to salt fog of a given water resistivity level.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":198668,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ESMO '93. Values in this paper reflect the changes to the Tables and the supporting paragraphs contained In the Tentative Interim Amendment (TIA) issued in 1993. Sufficient data is given to verify the minimum approach distances. There were requirements and restrictions imposed upon PG&E for issuing and maintaining this variance permit. One such requirement was that PG&E institute a program to evaluate and monitor the magnetic field health issue as it relates to the use of barehand techniques. The intent was to compare the electromagnetic exposure levels of barehand work procedures to other hot stick, live line techniques that PG&E utilizes. As part of the monitoring program and information gathering process, the Pacific Gas and Electric Company's Joint Union/Management Barehand Committee requested that electrical characteristic tests be performed on the arc that is obtained when performing the procedure of bonding onto or removing the bonding connection from an energized transmission line conductor. The purpose of the test was two-fold: (1) to characterize the energy in the bonding arc as defined in terms of power density, and (2) to compare measured arc power density levels with the protection guideline limits established in American National Standard Institute (ANSI) C95.1-1991 Standard \"American National Standard Safety Levels with Respect to Human Exposure to Radio Frequency Electromagnetic Fields (300 kHz-100 GHz)\".<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":198668,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of ESMO '93. The program included evaluation of large diameter auger holes, deformed steel anchor bars and use of concrete additives. Massive documentation is accumulated during the preliminary studies of terrain, alternative routes selection, power-line hardware configuration, cost-effectiveness-performance optimization, and more. Additional time consuming and costly paper works are invested, in the detailed design of the selected configuration and the unavoidable updating, arising from, unpredictable revisions, affecting parameters of the selected route and power-line hardware. Computerized photogrammetric survey, digital mapping and computerized design techniques have been combined in a procedure, supported by applied software, to minimize the planning, field survey, design and archive assets, involved in the process.
