The transmission of neurological signals to perform muscle contraction is compromised. However, functional electrical stimulation can minimize the impacts caused by these problems, as it evokes nerve action potentials through pulses of electrical current applied to the paralyzed neuromuscular tissue. The objective of this paper was to introduce a biphasic constant-current electrical stimulator with four output channels to evoke functional movements in people who have suffered spinal cord injury or stroke. The stimulation system has a graphical interface implemented in LabVIEW™, splitter circuits, and amplification outputs, where the therapist can change the stimulation parameters according to the muscle to be stimulated and the desired functional movements. With the developed prototype, a modulated signal with trapezoidal envelope was obtained on 1 kΩ load, 85.625 mA maximum current, 1 s duration for rise, plateau, fall and rest time, 25 Hz burst frequency, 1 kHz pulse frequency, and 20% for both pulse and burst duty cycles, corresponding to the settings made in the software; and these parameters are effective for obtaining artificial motor control for gait or grip.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129971366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work presents the development of a simulation of a system for the generation of focused magnetic fields by means of a figure-8 coil using the finite element method. Due to the geometry of the 8-shaped coils and based on the principle of magnetic superposition, it is possible to control the depth and area of stimulation. The characteristics of the coil considering the simulations cover frequencies from 1 Hz to 5 Hz, a maximum magnetic induction of 2 T and a current of 3.6 kA from the discharge of a capacitor with a time of 10 ms were considered as initial conditions of the model., an environmental temperature of 25°C and an absolute pressure of 0.77 atm corresponding to Mexico City, a relative permeability and permittivity of the copper conductor of 1 H/m and F/m respectively, in the same way, these values were taken for the air, adding an electrical conductivity of 0 S/m and for the simulation of the human head, the electrical properties of the skull, brain, scalp and cerebrospinal fluid were considered. The applicability of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a non-invasive technique that induces analgesia without using drugs.The aim of this research was to evaluate the TENS treatment for patients with TMD and orofacial pain, in the temporal muscle (TM), temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and masseter muscle (MM), through medical infrared thermography in three female patients. The obtained results indicate uniformity of the thermal distribution for the three studied patients after a single session the treatment with TENS. Although the sample is rather limited, the results show a decrease in the temperature asymmetry between the ROIs of the contralateral side in all patients, indicating the success of the treatment. Thus, thermography is clearly a promising complementary method for diagnostic and monitor chronic pain within specific treatment protocols ofTENS analgesic therapy in patients with TMD.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122925672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A complementary support of related healthcare can be based on an intelligent system that can diagnose early onset of respiratory disorders. The convolutional neural networks (CNN) were implemented utilizing image data, reflecting bidimensional signals. Specifically, CNN has shown to be powerful tool in the context of cardiopulmonary sounds evaluation. The configurations of CNN contain convolutional layers to extract feature maps and fully connected layers to classify indicators of interest. This disease can trigger more serious problems, such as poor circulation, diabetic foot, amputations.The objective is to understand the relationship between the generation of plaque inside the arteries with variations in blood flow and its temperature, creating a computational simulation based on the finite element method, for which the flow pressure, the flow velocity and heat transfer to nearby tissues, taking the size of the radius of the artery as a multiparametric variable.The change in the size of the arterial radius patient simulates a healthy one if the artery is wide and the reduction of the arterial radius simulates a patient with plaque formation.The results obtained with these simulations show that the velocity decreases when the arterial radius is reduced, which simulates a patient with blood problems, on the other hand, the flow pressure decreases if the patient is healthy. The temperature analysis gives us information about the behavior of the tissues, a decrease in temperature could indicate that there is ischemia or some disease.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129072556","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Evaluation of the brain as a soft tissue is very suitable to MRI as these scans provide more details, although CT is also often used as a quick tool for an initial diagnosis. In particular, the tumor tissue mainly appears as brighter shades than the rest of the regions in the brain. Detection of a brain tumor is a tedious task and its identification often involves segmentation of brain images, extraction of brain features and classification of abnormality in the MRI image. Based on this reflection we propose algorithm for brain structural changes documentation of selected image(s) and a tool assisting doctors in accelerated diagnosis and quantification of the degree of abnormality. Specifically, presented approach includes at the initial stage feature enhancement including minimizing gray-scale shade variations. In its final stage this allows color coding of presumptive tumor or other regions of interest (ROI) areas and gives an opportunity of comparative evaluation of tumor growth or reduction of its size. This is possible by a graphical and accompanied numerical presentation in terms of the percentage of the area classified as a tumor or other anomaly in reference to the total area of the brain reflected on a selected MRI image. Although this paper focuses on brain tumor, developed technique can be applied to images documenting other structural brain anomalies.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114248857","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can indicate tidal overdistension or tidal recruitment, which are two major mechanisms of ventilator-induced lung injury. However, it’s implementation require dedicated hardware and software and is not a widespread parameter used in commercial ventilators. In this work, an alternative, simple way to visually inspect the concavity of the pressure-time curve during mechanical ventilation is presented, by calculating the pressure difference of the pressure-time curve. This proves useful when implemented in low-cost emergency devices, such as those designed to cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, because of the reduced computational load required to perform its calculation. The method was implemented in a low-cost emergency mechanical ventilator and tested with an artificial lung for a proof-of-concept. Results show that this alternative method can be effectively used to qualitatively assess the concavity of the pressure-time curve.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125478817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This system works as a communication pathway between an individual’s central nervous system and a computing unit. The BCI described in this study has as primary directive the control of a simulated vehicle, for which it utilizes both neurological activity associated to an individual’s state of focus in the frequency domain, as well as artifacts produced by intentional blinks, found in the time domain. In order to successfully translate the user’s intention into commands, the acquired signals are spectrally and temporally pre-processed, features of interest are extracted by means of the wavelet packet decomposition (WPD), and are finally fed into a convolutional neural network (CNN) model, which outputs recursive predictions about the user’s mental state. The set of these general steps is capable of emitting navigational commands to the vehicle, and at the same time, return a user’s focus state related to the task in hand in the form of a visual feedback loop. Tests performed with the complete system, demonstrate that a system as the one proposed is satisfactorily functional, being capable of carrying the user’s intent to the simulated vehicle with a latency and margin of error within what’s expected for BCI applications based on EEG readings.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130355701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
