Results under different conditions have indicated that it can be used either to provoke cells death or to produce tissue regeneration. In accordance with research in other systems, as the brain, LIPUS could be proposed for ophthalmic applications, e.g. to prevent retinal damage, to improve drug delivery, to dissolve blood clots or sonothrombolysis, among others. In this paper, a study of cell viability of retinal neurons and Müller glia treated with LIPUS is presented. This viability is analogized between direct LIPUS treatments and the case when using conditioned media of LIPUS treated cells. LIPUS was applied at 10% and 20% duty factors by using a commercial ultrasound transducer with an adjustable signal generator. Total acoustic intensity at the culture well was measured and compared with the free- field condition. Results indicate an increase in Müller glia viability when using conditioned media from LIPUS pretreated retinal neurons. Using LIPUS to directly treat the cells provokes a small increase in viability without statistical significance.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"11 7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126168321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Athletes need to perform kicks with the optimal velocity and force; hence, mechanical power is a variable that uses both and could give an insight to subjects lower leg power. The objective is to calculate mechanical power from biomechanical parameters obtain in different kicks. We measure five elite subjects with an age range between 17 and 20 years old, we used AMTI force plates and Vicon photogrammetry system to measure the kicks given to a PunchSensor placed in a structure. Data was processed in Nexus, Visual3D and MATLAB in order to obtain mechanical power using P=F*v. Results show that lateral kicks are the ones that generate higher power (11500.11 W), followed by the frontal (4052.39 W) and finally the descendent (3061.56 W), also we notice that the height of the kick influence in the mechanical power generated (i.e., 4594.30 W frontal kick to the torso, 3510.48 W frontal kick to head); finally, to the lateral (1639.02 W lateral kick with right leg, 1506.71 lateral kick with left leg) and descendent kicks the laterality of the leg also influence on the mechanical power generated.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116999983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although CPAP is considered an effective therapy for OSA patients, it is poorly tolerated and often not accepted in a large OSA patient group, limiting its overall effectiveness [1]. Unfortunately, there is an evident lack of clinical screening tools to support the early prediction of adherence to treatment in patients with OSA and help medical staff in decision-making concerning the real needs of the patients. Therefore, this study presents a methodology to identify potential features associated with the adherence to CPAP treatment using features selection methods and the development and evaluation of different machine learning models to predict CPAP therapy adherent patients. We identified different patterns of 24-hours diastolic blood pressure, daytime systolic pressure, arousal index, uric acid test and triglycerides as the relevant factors correlated with the adherence to CPAP treatment. We developed and evaluated machine learning-based models to predict CPAP treatment adherence. The best-performing model was a artificial neural network (ANN) with AUC 0.84 (95%CI: 0.72 - 0.87). The identification of potential predictors and validation of machine learning-based approaches may be helpful to identify subjects poorly adherent to therapy.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"129 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114196493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pink noise, on the other hand, is a special class of white noise in which the power per unit bandwidth is higher in the audio spectrum. Typically generated in the audible spectrum between 20Hz and 20kHz, rain, the sound of a fan, a waterfall, or the sound experienced in a moving car all have pink noise frequencies, so it becomes clear why some people go into a state of relaxation or sleep when listening to these sounds. This work presents the design of an auditory stimulation system that combines binaural technology and sound at pink noise frequencies to induce a state of sleep and its effects on the bispectral index (BIS) that is used to determine the level of sedation in patients at the time of undergoing a surgical procedure and that allows, in the same way, to know the level of sleep in which the person is. For this research, an algorithm was developed that combines binaural sound and pink noise and the experiment was carried out on 12 volunteer nurses with night shifts who were subjected to different auditory stimulations (without sound, with pink noise, with binaural sound, and with binaural sound at pink noise frequencies) finding that the combination has greater relaxing effects than each stimulus separately, this under controlled conditions and with volunteers without disturbing any sleep.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124292946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Impaired CDS is one of the main clinical indicators of the evolution of heart failure (HF) syndrome, considered the leading cause of death worldwide. The VentriQuant system incorporates quantification methods that have already been validated and used in the clinic, but also aims to incorporate new algorithms and indices in order to expand its use and evaluate its clinical utility. The VentriQuant system is expected to provide support by expanding access to cardiovascular imaging specialists to new tools and methods of analysis, and to generate the possibility of remote diagnosis and increased reproducibility in quantitative and objective assessment, with a direct impact on better diagnosis and follow-up of HF patients. The VentriQuant system is easy to use, its operation is simple and intuitive, and it displays important information for the evaluation of the contraction synchrony of both ventricles.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125269978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prosthesis consists of a mechanical part that is identified by the construction of the hand, motors and pulley system; an electronic part characterized by the EMG signal acquisition and conditioning system that includes the amplification and filtering stage; and the control system which consists of H-bridges so that the motors rotate in both directions, resistive sensors to generate the proper pressure of the hand, angular position sensors that are the ones that check the angle at which the fingers are located and an Arduino UNO that receives the signal, processes it, controls the position of the fingers and the pressure they exert on objects, controls the speed of the motors, the ignition time and which activate in their different movements. EMG signals were displayed in a user interface, developed in a high-level language such as LabVIEW, allowing digital processing of the action potentials of forearm muscles for analysis. A reliable EMG signal was obtained from the conditioning stage, which allowed threshold levels for finger activation to be established.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127997266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the present time, there is no easily affordable and robust instrument for noninvasive estimation of temperature changes. Ultrasound is one of the most feasible alternatives for non-invasive temperature change estimation during thermotherapy due to its simplicity of processing, tissue penetration capability, relative low cost, and its non-invasive and non-ionizing nature, suggesting a promising prospective of this technique to be used in clinical therapy. A temporal analysis is presented comparing the time delays suffered by two sets of ideal signals generated using a theoretical mathematical description. The cross- correlation method was used to calculate the time lags of the signals as they pass through a medium containing scatterers with temperature increments. The linear regressions conducted for all the four data windows in which the two sets of signals were divided show a linear and growing behavior, which implies that the higher the temperature, the greater the time delay between the signals of the same window.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114941993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The controller and the state estimator implement a PK-PD model that represents the dynamics of the system. The control system is tested in a set of 11 virtual patients generated from a PBPK-PD model and individualized in accordance with demographic characteristics and variations in the values of the PD model parameters. The control strategy developed is characterized by a rapid response to disturbances and a short induction time without overshooting, an appropriate dosage and robustness to bring and maintain the BIS at the reference value. The above is evaluated by means of various quantitative metrics.","PeriodicalId":197762,"journal":{"name":"2022 Global Medical Engineering Physics Exchanges/ Pan American Health Care Exchanges (GMEPE/PAHCE)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122377753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
