Focusing on the Argentinian and French translation support programs within the scope of their appearance as Guest of Honor at the Frankfurt Book Fair and against the background of the global system of translations, it explores which works, authors, genres and languages predominate in the choice of funding institutions. In addition to its function in cultural diplomacy, translation funding is seen as an effective tool in strengthening cultural diversity. An increase in literary reviews accompanied the shift. Publishing by subscription emerged as an evolving form of patronage where authors received monetary support from readers before publication. Women authors found subscription publishing welcoming as a means to avoid the commercial marketplace. Some authors used this publishing method in the name of seeking charitable support. Reviewers linked subscription publishing to female authors and acts of charity as reviewers attempted to circumvent the problem of potentially alienating their own readership, who could be subscribers. Nombre de femmes se sont ainsi choisi des pseudonymes masculins, tandis que certains hommes ont signe de noms feminins. Ces formules different sensiblement, non seulement dans leurs enjeux, mais aussi dans leurs formes, notamment lorsqu’elles constituent une maniere d’entrer en litterature. Alors que les noms de plume d’autrices telles que Daniel Stern (Marie d’Agoult) et George Sand sont rapidement connus comme tels, et utilises durablement, des ecrivains comme Prosper Merimee et Pierre Louys retiennent plutot la formule de l’heteronyme (Clara Gazul et Bilitis), pour une seule oeuvre. Le destinataire, qui paie fort cher cette prestation, est presque toujours une tete couronnee de l’espace germanique, ce qui est un eloquent temoignage de la fascination qu’exerce alors la culture francaise sur l’elite europeenne. Malgre de nombreux points communs, la « correspondance litteraire » differe de la correspondance erudite de l’epoque humaniste dont elle est heritiere, autant que du journalisme litteraire qui prolifere au meme moment, et des « nouvelles a la main » a contenu proprement politique. Rentre a Philadelphie, il publia un livre intitule Sketches of Paris: In Familiar Letters to His Friends by an American Gentleman. L’ouvrage fut accueilli avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme des deux cotes de l’Atlantique : imprime a Philadelphie en 1838, il fut egalement edite a Londres la meme annee sous le titre The American in Paris. Le romancier Jules Janin donna quelques annees plus tard une adaptation francaise de ce livre a succes. En etudiant les Sketches of Paris, nous avons voulu montrer de quelles manieres le point de vue de Sanderson se definit comme celui d’un auteur qui incarne la democratie americaine telle que la decrit Alexis de Tocqueville dans son celebre ouvrage publie en 1835 et 1840. Car l’egalite des conditions, la decentralisation, la participation de tous a la vie politique, la mobilite sociale, la separation des pouvoirs, l’influence du commerce et de l’industrie constituent le prisme au travers duquel le voyageur americain observe et tente de comprendre la societe francaise des annees 1830. La seconde partie de notre analyse porte sur l’adaptation francaise des Sketches donnee par Jules Janin dans Un hiver a Paris (1843), puis dans L’ete a Paris (1844). Adaptation tres libre et non traduction, contrairement a ce que Janin voudrait faire croire a ses lecteurs, puisque le texte de Sanderson subit d’etonnantes metamorphoses sous la plume de l’ecrivain francais. Au point de vue tres critique de l’auteur des Sketches, Janin substitue celui d’un enthousiaste « Yankee », d’un « La Bruyere americain » tout acquis a la grandeur de la monarchie de Juillet et aux charmes de la culture francaise.
