The study examined a self-translated book from English into Arabic called the Prophet by the famous American Lebanese author, Gibran Khalih Gibran. This study aims to investigate the true nature of Self-Translation practice whether it is an adequate translation or a rewriting of the original version. This self-translation is examined in light of what alterations and changes are done by the writer/translator, and to which extent the translator is faithful to his source text (English version). Twenty examples were selected from Gibran's the Prophet and were compared to their translation in the Arabic version. These examples include words, phrases, sentences and sometimes whole paragraphs. The data were analyzed according to the Discourse Analysis (DA) Theory, especially based on linguistic and semantic perspectives. Further, the examples from both versions were compared and the differences were highlighted and discussed. The study finds that Gibran was translating rather than rewriting into Arabic.\u0000Keywords: Self-Translation, Faithful, Rendition, Rewriting, Gibran, the Prophet.

Analyzing al-Zayyat’s The Open Door [al-Bāb al-maftūḥ], El Sadaawi’s short story “The Picture” [al-Sura] and Bakr’s “Thirty-one Beautiful Green Trees” [Ihdā wa thālathūn shajarah jamīlah khadrā] in terms of the twofold approach allows in-depth explorations of various strategies of dissent and different modes of counter-conduct and persistence in the selected literary texts. It also allows for rigorous and authentic evaluation of how the female protagonists - Layla, Narjis and Kareema – endeavor to carve out other ways of being that lead to the emergence of their new subjectivities and their gendered identities. \u0000Keywords: Agency, Counter-Conduct, Everyday Acts of Resistance, Persistence, Women’s Writing

Second, universal QAD triggers an actuality entailment by default. We resolve this puzzle by proposing a compositional analysis of modal QAD that derives QAD's lexically-encoded duality of force and accounts for universal QAD's automatic implicativity.\u0000Keywords: Epistemic-Denoting, Lexically-Encoded Quantificational Force, Actuality Entailment.

It first examines medical terminology in English, considering how such terms are coined or created, and later sheds light on the importance of neologism in medical discourse. Although English maintains itself as the lingua franca of science and medicine, many researchers have examined the importance of translating medical terminology into Arabic and creating new equivalents instead of borrowing foreign words directly into Arabic. Thus, this article aims to first shed light on newly used words that have emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, and then analyse their most commonly used translations. The data consists of four common words that have been extensively used during the pandemic. The study concluded that the majority of these terminologies are translated using a descriptive method, or Arabicization. The article further highlights the importance of creating a consistent medical terminology base in Arabic. \u0000Keywords: COVID-19, Neologism, Arabicization, Borrowing, Medical Translation.

That being so, this study attempts to highlight some epistemic and deontic modality bloopers in some translated verses in Surah Al-Kahf (18:1-21). This modality investigation was carried out within the theoretical framework of the values and realizations of English and Arabic modality systems set by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) and Anghelescu (1999). The results showed that, first, translators should not use English epistemic possibility modals with low values when rendering Arabic verbs in the subjunctive mood. Second, some Arabic conjunctions such as “أو” ‘or’ convey a degree of possibility that requires an English epistemic possibility adjunct modal to be there in the target text. Third, Arabic verbs with emphatic affixes are better translated with an English modal expressing high degree of inclination.\u0000Keywords: Epistemic Possibility, Deontic Modals, Modality, Proposition, Subjunctive and Jussive Moods.

Variation in Negation Patterns of Verbless Clauses in Ammani Arabic 阿曼尼阿拉伯语无动词从句否定模式的变化

Gender, age, level of education and region (West Amman vs. East Amman) were investigated in this regard. Twenty-five hours of audio-recorded sociolinguistic interviews with 32 speakers who were born and raised in Amman were conducted. After using computer software GOLDVARB X (Sankoff et al. 2005), we propose that the alternation between [mu] and [miʃ] is socially conditioned. The most significant social factor is gender. The variant [mu] is found to be a solid sign of femininity. The second most significant social factor is age, whose effect is correlated with the assumption that young speakers, unlike old speakers, prefer less-complex forms. Education and region were also found, yet to a lesser extent, significant. West Amman speakers prefer [miʃ] in contrast to East Amman people who prefer [mu]. Although this finding is arguably unpredicted as [mu] is the variant which is socially viewed as more prestigious (therefore it would be more preferred by wealthier West Amman dwellers), it is nonetheless consistent with the demographic situation of Amman. East Amman is mostly inhabited by Jordanians who descended from Palestinian regions of which the common negation pattern of verbless sentences manifests [mu] rather than [miʃ].\u0000Keywords: Language Variation and Change, Verbless-Sentences Negation, Age, Gender, Education, Region, Ammani Arabic.\u0000Keywords: Language Variation and Change, Verbless-Sentences Negation, Age, Gender, Education, Region, Ammani Arabic.

This study aims at investigating the contexts wherein the Kurdish language is used by the Kurds of Baghdad and their attitudes towards their ethnic language (Kurdish) to see if the official status that has been accorded to it is mirrored in society. To do so, a sample of 100 respondents selected from the Kurdish community living in Baghdad took part in a questionnaire and pilot interviews. The study shows that home and family are the most common contexts within which the Kurds use the Kurdish language. Results also show that Arabic and Kurdish are used side by side within the neighborhood, workplace, and education institutions contexts. As for attitudes towards Kurdish, the participants have displayed positive attitudes towards their ethnic language and felt proud of it as a unifying symbol of the Kurdish nation.
