The study examined a self-translated book from English into Arabic called the Prophet by the famous American Lebanese author, Gibran Khalih Gibran. This study aims to investigate the true nature of Self-Translation practice whether it is an adequate translation or a rewriting of the original version. This self-translation is examined in light of what alterations and changes are done by the writer/translator, and to which extent the translator is faithful to his source text (English version). Twenty examples were selected from Gibran's the Prophet and were compared to their translation in the Arabic version. These examples include words, phrases, sentences and sometimes whole paragraphs. The data were analyzed according to the Discourse Analysis (DA) Theory, especially based on linguistic and semantic perspectives. Further, the examples from both versions were compared and the differences were highlighted and discussed. The study finds that Gibran was translating rather than rewriting into Arabic.\u0000Keywords: Self-Translation, Faithful, Rendition, Rewriting, Gibran, the Prophet.

Pour ce faire, nous abordons la compétence de lecture-compréhension et nous définissons ces deux termes, lecture et compréhension. Nous examinons également les principes de la linguistique textuelle ainsi que la notion de séquence narrative. Nous présentons ensuite notre contexte de recherche et nous identifions les difficultés rencontrées par nos apprenants lors de la lecture-compréhension des séquences narratives. Analyzing al-Zayyat’s The Open Door [al-Bāb al-maftūḥ], El Sadaawi’s short story “The Picture” [al-Sura] and Bakr’s “Thirty-one Beautiful Green Trees” [Ihdā wa thālathūn shajarah jamīlah khadrā] in terms of the twofold approach allows in-depth explorations of various strategies of dissent and different modes of counter-conduct and persistence in the selected literary texts. It also allows for rigorous and authentic evaluation of how the female protagonists - Layla, Narjis and Kareema – endeavor to carve out other ways of being that lead to the emergence of their new subjectivities and their gendered identities. \u0000Keywords: Agency, Counter-Conduct, Everyday Acts of Resistance, Persistence, Women’s Writing
