In 2019, the FDA approved use of bremelanotide (Vyleesi) for premenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder (HSDD), the second medication approved for this purpose. The first was flibanserin (Addyi), a pill to be taken daily at bedtime, and not within 2 hours of consuming alcohol. Though HSDD is highly prevalent and affects nearly six million premenopausal women, the availability of approved pharmaceuticals to treat it is relatively recent. Bremelanotide activates melanocortin receptors and pathways in the brain involved in the sexual response. Studies have shown that it improves sexual desire and lowers distress surrounding sexual interaction. Though not approved for men, bremelanotide has the potential to benefit men with low libido and erectile difficulties. As with many medications, bremelanotide is associated with adverse effects, which include nausea, flushing, injection site reactions, headache, vomiting, hypertension, and irreversible hyper-pigmentation. In addition, the off-label prescription of testosterone in women is widespread and been used to improve libido, genitourinary symptoms, and vitality, particularly in the anti-aging community. Other pharmaceuticals that are prescribed off-label to aid female sexual function include the PDE5 inhibitors sildenafil, vardenafil and tadalafil. Non-pharmacologic interventions for improving sexual function include sex-positive vitamins, minerals, PDE5, herbs, and lifestyle changes. Combinations the above pharmaceuticals and natural therapies may enhance efficacy while minimizing side effects. The recent approval of bremelanotide is significant as it should advance knowledge and research on female sexual dysfunction, which is a relatively neglected area. The prescription of off- label and/or compounded medications for sexual dysfunction is generally considered within the domain of integrative, functional, or complementary and alternative medicine.","PeriodicalId":19661,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Complementary & Alternative Medicine","volume":"22 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81735133","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Along with attitudes changing, more research is emerging demonstrating the potential therapeutic value of cannabis. The potential of cannabis as an adjunctive medication for chronic pain or potentially as an opioid replacement is now of special interest in light of the opioid epidemic. A Pew Research Center study reported that the majority (62%) of Americans now support legalization of marijuana, this represents a more than doubling of the percentage of Americans supporting cannabis legalization over the last twenty years [1].","PeriodicalId":19661,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Complementary & Alternative Medicine","volume":"34 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80182992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

By understanding how and why soccer injuries occur, we hope to reduce prevalent injuries amongst soccer athletes. Methods: Via a prospective cohort, we tracked male and female soccer players between the ages of 13 to 17 eligible to train with the Ontario Soccer Association provincial program during the period of January 1st, 2013 and December 31st, 2016. Data collection occurred during all player exposures to potential injury. Exposures occurred at the Ontario Soccer Centre training grounds and various other venues on multiple playing surfaces throughout Ontario. Results: 473 injuries were recorded. Muscle strain, pull or tightness was responsible for 35.7% of all injuries and ranked as the most prevalent injury. Discussion: As anticipated, the most common injury reported in a four-year prospective study of injuries in elite Ontario youth provincial and national soccer players during training and match play was muscular strain, which warrants more suitable preventive programs aimed at strengthening and properly warming up the players’ muscles.","PeriodicalId":19661,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Complementary & Alternative Medicine","volume":"659 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76843028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, adolescent pregnancy remains an important public health issue in the U.S. Teen pregnancy continues to adversely affect the mom, infant, and community. Adolescent moms are more likely to engage in substance abuse, have lower socioeconomic status, and are more dependent on public assistance. Infants born to adolescent moms are more likely to suffer from health care issues such as low birth weight, neonatal death, and sudden infant death syndrome. Furthermore, adolescent pregnancy is estimated to cost US taxpayers 9 billion dollars each year. Despite the decline in the adolescent pregnancy rates, Healthy People 2020 identifies decreasing adolescent pregnancy as a priority in increasing the overall health and wellness of U.S. citizens. Epidemiologic studies can be used to identify adolescent pregnancy causal relationships, provide and understanding for these relationships, and recommend prevention options. Dever’s model is used to analyze how adolescent pregnancy is influenced by human biology, life-style, environment, and the health care system. Health care providers serve as advocates for adolescent health and play an integral role in the reduction of adolescent pregnancy. However, in order to provide evidence-based and holistic patient care, providers should be knowledgeable with issues surrounding adolescent pregnancy.","PeriodicalId":19661,"journal":{"name":"Online Journal of Complementary & Alternative Medicine","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78464370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
