In so doing, it addresses some of the existing and persisting problems of micro finance in rural areas. An innovative aspect of the paper is evidenced through its recommendation of the Micro-Savings Requirement Scheme – which offers numerous benefits – as will be highlighted in this paper.","PeriodicalId":193949,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Institutions/Organizations (Sub-Topic)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117156171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The study used the data from interviews and focus group discussions from randomly selected members of cooperative societies in six local governments. The data are analyzed using percentages, content analysis and quotation. The study found that the savings product helps to inculcate a good savings habit among the participants because they find it easier to save now than when they were introduced to the program. The members also developed self esteem as -part owners- of the program because of the compulsory savings that they participate in, and they do not want the program to collapse. Members are also satisfied because they are able to save in the scheme which helps them to reduce their expenses on frivolous spending such as leisure drinking and acquisition of more wives. The members’ inability to withdraw from their savings when in financial need, except on cessation of membership, was found as the drawback of the program.","PeriodicalId":193949,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Institutions/Organizations (Sub-Topic)","volume":"212 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114343319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

MFI performance encompasses both financial performance and outreach. Good governance in terms of strengthening stewardship, achievement of MFIs’ primary objectives and promoting further development of the industry have been asserted as key elements in the literature pertaining to MFI performance. Similarly, several cases concerning poor governance have been analysed. Good corporate governance has become more important due to the demand for transparency and accountability of funds utilised in microfinance activities. Further, MFIs need to have a","PeriodicalId":193949,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Institutions/Organizations (Sub-Topic)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115174186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From planting to harvesting the process is not done manually because it is tedious and cumbersome. Due to poverty and other factors, most small scale farmers have joined various microfinance institutions with an aim of improving wheat production and thus improving the general living standards. However, despite the numerous microfinance institutions in Moiben Division, it has been revealed that the living standards of people seldom improve. This study used descriptive survey design. The target population constituted small scale wheat farmers from Moiben Division. Purposive sampling was first adopted in the choice of study area. This is because most small scale farmers have resorted to microfinance services towards improving wheat production. Simple random sampling was used to select 200 study participants where proportionate strategy was used to get representative samples from the five selected locations. The study found that most small scale wheat farmers access credit facilities in terms of loans, savings and even deposits. However, despite accessing these facilities, the level of production is not very high due to high interest rates, short repayment period and lack of training. The study recommends that there is need for microfinance institutions to provide training of their clients especially small scale farmers on the utilization of such credit facilities and microfinance institutions to provide favourable interest rates to these farmers.","PeriodicalId":193949,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Institutions/Organizations (Sub-Topic)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129826941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main limiting factor is very low customer activity rates. Low usage is compounded by the prevalence of unduly low pricing models on the basic savings proposition, which is based on a perception that customers have low willingness to pay for savings services. These two factors are of course linked: usage and willingness to pay are both a function of the strength of the value proposition that customers perceive. Ventures that have incorporated a remittance service have found both higher usage and the ability to charge higher transaction prices. However, the limited geographic coverage of these services limits the value of the remittance service. Where the value proposition is based on remittances, scale and network effects are all-important.","PeriodicalId":193949,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Institutions/Organizations (Sub-Topic)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121713786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is ample evidence cited in the form of case-stories of women who have reared successful informal businesses, using microcredit. However there is scant evidence on what are the kinds of informal businesses traditionally being run by poor women, how do they initiate it and whom do they turn to for finance and other were withal. In a year-long study being carried out through a detailed methodology of asking MFI borrowers to keep daily financial diaries, in the town of Ramanagaram, Karnataka, we were able to track the daily cash inflows and outflows of a few women who did informal businesses such as selling bronze vessels, bed sheets, bangles, etc. In doing so, we were able to trace how MFI loans and repayment schedules impact their cash transactions. The evidence we gathered about micro-credit was mixed. Women running these businesses stated that with an MFI that they cannot afford to miss even one weekly instalment; as a result they end up borrowing – at very high costs – from neighbours or others to make the weekly repayment to the MFI. The long repayment duration (one year) of the loan in the MFI also makes them feel that they are indebted for a longer period; whereas they seem to prefer completing the loan cycle in a period of 3-4 months as can be done with finance companies. This goes a lot to say about the need for introducing flexibility in loan products of most Grameen type MFIs.","PeriodicalId":193949,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Institutions/Organizations (Sub-Topic)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130861123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Muriel","doi":"10.2139/SSRN.1977036","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/SSRN.1977036","url":null,"abstract":"This work studies the emergence of cultural economics, insofar as it is the associated with the industrial heritage, within the context of post-industrial societies. From this point of view we approach cultural tourism, one of the most dynamic tourist markets and an important asset in the most developed nations.All over Europe, Britain has the biggest extension of heritage railways, precisely the country where the earliest modern railways were built and the one pioneer in the Industrial Revolution. The outstanding development of this industry is possible due to the free supply of manpower and capital; something to be placed in the paramount development of volunteering and civil society in Britain. Since their very inception, railways have enjoyed a prominent place in the imaginary as well as the collective identity in Britain, where both the steam power and the Industrial Revolution are paradigms of advancement. Heritage railways are a cultural tourism activity based on a public good; the (industrial) railway heritage. British experience suggests that the Third Sector (volunteering) is the most suitable for the preservation and reuse of industrial heritage. The province of Huelva, due to the outstanding development of mining on the Iberian Pyrite Belt since the last quarter of 19th century, would amount, in the beginning of the next century, to almost a third of the railway extension of Andalusia, when its surface is just a 12 per cent. As a result of this, its railway density became the double than in Andalusia or Spain. In this province is found the only heritage railway of the former and one of the very few of the later. With this exception, the closing of hundreds of kilometers of railway lines has meant the loss of the ensuing industrial heritage; dismantled and sold as scrap, often after some years of neglect and dereliction.The ultimate causes of this situation are to be found in the low interpersonal trust of the local society, which translates into the lack of genuine volunteering and into poor public governance; both of them directly affect the preservation and reuse of the railway heritage. In addition, a collective identity diverging from the British one, with different coordinates, precludes the appreciation of the Andalusian industrial heritage’s cultural value. Also, the emergence of a new identity paradigm would amount to a challenge of the current status quo and the elites that support it, apart from being clearly substitutive as far as the allocation of resources is concerned. All those facts ultimately bring our work to the field of the New Institutional Economics (NIE). From the microeconomics point of view, it is apparent that for the current stock of preserved and reused industrial heritage the demand clearly out sizes the level of supply, this explains the commercial success of the only heritage railway in service.","PeriodicalId":193949,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Institutions/Organizations (Sub-Topic)","volume":"12 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-07-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125778979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research provides an overview of the availability of microfinance and its impact on economic growth in the rural areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Opinion survey of the locals of different rural areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been conducted using schedule method. A sample size of 100 people has been selected from the randomly selected 35 villages of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Descriptive statistics for center and dispersion have been used for the purpose of analysis. Findings suggest that there is a huge gap between the amount of microfinance needed and the amount of microfinance that is available in the rural areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Moreover, the available microfinance facilities are not generating sufficient economic activities.Available at SSRN: http://ssrn.com/abstract=1944406","PeriodicalId":193949,"journal":{"name":"ERPN: Institutions/Organizations (Sub-Topic)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116143870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we determine from a duopoly model of differentiated products this trade line, the GATT line and the domestic industry's stay-exit function to show when protectionism, managed or free trade should be implemented. This framework is used to propose strategies that can prevent the destruction of a domestic industry.
