There are limited studies which considered the combined effect of ageing and postural changes on HRV of women. The objective of this study is: 1) to analyse and reveal the cardiac autonomic status of pre-menopausal and post-menopausal women; 2) to determine the effect of age and change in postures on autonomic modulations of heart rate of women. HRV dataset of 74 pre-menopausal women during follicular phase and 20 post-menopausal women in lying and standing postures are used for HRV analysis. The results proved that age and physical activities affect the HRV in post-menopausal and pre-menopausal women. It is shown using linear and nonlinear methods of HRV analysis that increase in age along with change in postures increases the sympathetic and decreases the parasympathetic activity in post-menopausal as compared to the pre-menopausal women.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. The characteristics include several components, namely tumour size, enhancement, irregular spiculated edge, lobulated, air bronchograms, ground glass opacity (GGO) and density. This study identifies GGO lesion characteristics using CT image datasets obtained from Sardjito Public Hospital, Indonesia. The initial stage conducted is a cropping process performed by a radiologist so that the research's focus is merely on the lesion. The next process is the feature extraction by using grey level co-occurrence matrices (GLCM) with four features, namely energy, contrast, correlation and homogeneity. The classification stage is carried out after the extraction stage which is followed by features selection. Having selected two most dominant features from total of 16 features, the proposed method achieves accuracy of 88.8%, sensitivity of 87.5% and specificity of 90%.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. Despite studies have pointed out the impact of EHRs in reducing healthcare structures' costs and increasing revenues, it is not clear if the return on investment (ROI) justifies the initial effort required. This paper proposes an advanced EHR joined to a data ware house (DWH) enabling business intelligence analysis, for structuring documents and manipulating atomic data. A case study is presented dealing with the implementation of a prototypal version of the EHR-DWH developed within the Smart Health 2.0 project (PON04a2_C), carried out between 2012 and 2015, at IRCCS-ISMETT, an Italian transplant institute. The ROI, the pay-back period, and the net present value have been calculated based on actual investment costs, and estimated maintenance costs. Results show that the ROI is in line with that of the reference sector, making profitable investments in EHRs.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Medical Eng. The proposed work mainly involves three stages namely denoising, feature extraction and classification. The removal of noise from ECG signal is achieved by applying wavelet threshold technique. The extraction of clinically useful features is carried out through morphological technique, statistical analysis, principal component analysis (PCA)-based technique and independent component analysis-wavelet packet decomposition (ICA-WPD) technique. The extracted features are used as inputs for artificial neural network (ANN), support vector machines (SVM) and K-nearest neighbour (KNN) classifier models for detecting ischemic beats. The performance of all models are compared and validated with ECG signal acquired from physiobank database in terms of performance indices such as classification accuracy, sensitivity and positive prediction accuracy. The results have confirmed that the ANN model trained and tested with features extracted by ICA-WPD provides highest classification accuracy of 96.85%, PPA of 99.59% and sensitivity of 97.22%. Results clearly demonstrated that the ANN classifier model combined with ICA-WPD-based feature is more effective in diagnosing myocardial ischemia at early stages.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. Hepatocytes, particularly, are highly specialised cells, their geometrical conformation, and their coculture with no parenquimal cells and vascularised tissue, are essential to their physiology and proper function. Polymeric scaffolds for cell growth have been modified through plasma polymerisation to improve their biological properties. This work presents a Poly (L-lactic acid) (PLLA) coated scaffold with polypyrrole plasma doped with iodine (Ppy-I). The scaffold where seeded with two different cell lines, hepatocytes (HepG2) with stellate cells (Ito), and hepatocytes (HepG2) with endothelial cells (HUVEC), the data were evaluated against control hepatocytes (HepG2) culture. The morphology of the cells was evaluated by microscopy; to corroborate the cell proliferation on the material, images of the samples with the cells were taking three times per week. Total protein in the supernatant was measured, and showed that in the endothelial coculture increased 25% the protein production and the stellate coculture increased 20% the protein production against the hepatocyte culture. In conclusion, we obtain a Ppy-I surface coculture that optimises the conditions for better liver models.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Medical Eng. In the present work, we present an automatic method for tumour's detection in mammography images. The proposed approach is to construct a detection pattern which starts with the Otsu's method: the thresholding step, followed by estimating the number of classes based on the local binary pattern (LBP) technique. To automate the initialisation task, we proposed to apply the classification by the k-means dynamic improved by Markov's method. The tumour's image is the result of the maximum correlation. A second contribution which is based on active contours gradient vector flow (GVF) with quasi-automatic initialisation applied on the structure that resulted from the structure/texture decomposition of the image to classify. The experimental results show the quality and automation of tumour's detection in medical images in comparison to literature methods.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Medical Eng. This paper presents the design and implementation of a remote patient monitoring (RPM) system by utilising the cellular GSM technology in order to send short message service (SMS) to the responsible person typically the doctor in charge of following the patient health. The earlier mention technologies are indeed as easy practical, inexpensive and very effective way for transmitting vital information to the healthcare providers. The novelty of this paper appears by using an android-based application which is a user friendly application running either on smart phone or tablets. The android application records the received SMS and keep these messages in the database.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Medical Eng. Utilising a feedback loop for temperature management through a third party electronic device, the ice cuff combines inexpensive, commodity hardware; a thermoelectric cooler, a programmed microcontroller, temperature sensor, thermoelectric driver, Bluetooth module, seven segment display, heat sink with cooling fan, 12 V dc supply, connected in a closed circuit. Initial results of this pilot experiment demonstrates that using an electronic ice cuff allows for real-time monitoring of tissue temperature during cold therapy administration, and maintenance of target temperature range for as long as cold therapy is required for the therapy to be effective. This is a clear advantage over traditional icepacks, where tissue temperature falls rapidly when the icepack is applied.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. J. Medical Eng. We studied the effect of the spacer material on the ability of the membrane to promote osteogenesis in an animal model and the gene expression patterns of membranes obtained from humans. Critical-sized osseous defects were created in the ulnae of 12 rabbits. Stainless steel (SS) or polymethymethacrylate (PMMA) spacers were inserted into the defects, and the animals healed for four or eight weeks. After sacrifice, samples of the membrane were grown in cell culture. Human membrane samples were collected for gene expression analyses. Cultures of rabbit membranes with bone marrow cells showed significantly greater alkaline phosphatase activity (PMMA) and mineral deposition (SS) than bone marrow cells alone. All membranes had elevated expression of osteoblast-related genes. Inducible membranes around orthopaedic implants likely contain active cells of the OB lineage and the spacer material may influence the healing properties of the membrane.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int. Twelve healthy preterm infants were studied using a within-subject cross over design to compare semi-upright and the elevated sidelying position during bottle feeding. Outcome measures were physiologic indicators of cardiopulmonary status: heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and respiratory pattern variability. Preliminary results suggest that analysis of respiratory waveform variability is feasible and may be a more sensitive measure of cardiopulmonary physiology than means for heart rate, respiratory rate and percent haemoglobin oxygen saturation. Nonlinear methods of analysis of the respiratory data provide a distinct perspective on the adaptability of infants' breathing patterns while feeding. The clinical application of monitoring respiratory waveforms using nonlinear methods may be helpful in identifying readiness to initiate and advance feeds orally in preterm infants.","PeriodicalId":193362,"journal":{"name":"Int.
