The guideline included the definition of the (TPACK) model with algebraic context. An available sample was selected from the schools of Jerash Kasbah of the Directorate of Education of Jerash Governorate, consisting of (36) primary mathematics teachers, divided into two groups: one experimental consisted of (18) teachers trained according to the (TPACK) model, the other was a control group consisted of (18) teachers who did not undergo training. {"title":"When East Meets West: A Comparative Analysis of Credibility and Persuasive Appeals in Cross-Cultural Email Negotiations between Genders","authors":"A. Alsharif","doi":"10.59992/ijesa.2023.v3n1p5","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.59992/ijesa.2023.v3n1p5","url":null,"abstract":"The bulk of studies focusing on cross-cultural variations in persuasive appeals examines letters or newspaper articles (Al-Ali 2006; Alhudhaif, 2005; Bhatia, 2014; Connor et al., 1995; Ismail, 2010). It is rare for a study to examine persuasive appeals within intercultural settings via email communication for academic proposal purposes. Typical findings of these cross-cultural studies suggest that non-native English speakers do not use rational appeals as frequently as native speakers and focus more on effective appeals. However, these studies did not base their judgements on interactive communications and the cross-cultural comparison of newspapers or political texts is hardly comparable. To this end, this paper provides a more fine-grain analysis by linking between the new impoliteness framework and persuasive appeals (impeded within genre analysis) to explore gender and cultural differences. the differences in email negotiations persuasive appeals where relevant by using comparable email data written by both cultural groups (i.e. Australians and Saudis). The results indicate that both focused on rational appeals, using far fewer credible and affective appeals. However, there were significant differences in the way both cultures utilised these appeals. In the affective appeals, Saudi men made more compliments and used more emotional and (im) polite requests than Saudi females. However, assessing story writing can be challenging and time-consuming for teachers, especially when they have to deal with large classes and multiple criteria. Therefore, some researchers have explored the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to automate the assessment of story writing and provide feedback to learners. However, the reliability of these tools is still questionable. This study aimed to compare the intra- and inter-rater reliability of three AI tools for assessing EFL learners' story writing: Poe.com, Bing, and Google Bard. The study utilized quantitative tools to answer the research questions, namely, calculating the Fleiss' Kappa coefficient using the Datatab software program (available on datatab.com). The study sampled 14 written pieces by EFL Libyan adult learners, the pieces used were stories built around a prompt provided by the teacher. The assessment was done using two criteria, one including the measurement of students' creativity, and the second was done focusing only on the linguistic aspect of the students' writings. With the creativity criterion, the results of the study show that Poe's intra-rater reliability was 0.01 (slight), while Bing's was 0.2 (fair), Bard's was 0.2 (fair). This shows that Poe is the least reliable assessment tool among the three. For the inter-rater reliability, there were three assessments done to the same 14 sampled pieces to check the consistency of the results. In the first attempt the inter-rater reliability was 0.04 (slight), the second assessment it was 0.01 (slight), on the third time it was -0.03 (no agreement). There was a decrease in the consistency and reliability of scores over time. Without the creativity criterion, the results show that Poe's inter-rater reliability level was 0.05 (slight), while Bing's was -0.02 (no agreement), and Bard's was 0.01 (slight). Here, it is shown that Bing was the least reliable. For the inter-rater reliability, the three assessments made by the three software applications were compared. There were three assessments done on the same 14 sampled pieces to check the consistency of the results. In the first attempt, the inter-rater reliability was 0 (slight), the second assessment it was -0.1 (no agreement), on the third time it was -0.13 (no agreement). There was a decrease in the consistency and reliability of scores over time. The three applications performed in a reliable way to a certain extent without the exclusion of the creativity criterion, this goes against the common belief that AI software cannot assess creativity. Still, the results of the reliability measurements with the creativity criterion show that the assessment scores are not statistically significant, and there's a high probability that the observed agreement is due to random chance. It is widely held that modernization led eventually to diminishing the Ulama's role as leaders holding the highest moral authority in Muslim society. Taking the experience of nineteenth century Egypt as an example, the present study systematically examines the literature and discusses and analyses the existing perspective regarding the impact of modernization on the Ulama. By analyzing events and developments related to the marriage of Ali Yousef, the owner Al-moayed newspaper, and Safia Al-sadat, which took place in 1904, this study demonstrates that the established and prevailing wisdom concerning the impact of modernization on the Ulama has no basis in fact and needs to be reviewed and re-evaluated. After a century from the start of modernization in Egypt, the Ulama retained their social role and influence. Furthermore, their wide-spread moral authority remained to a great degree intact. Thus, the Ulama were in a position that allowed them to not only challenge the highest political authority in Egypt, but also to regulate social change and the modernization process per se according to their criteria and vision. The study also clarifies the important aspects of the history of the two states. The results also show that the relation between the two states was not always belligerent and hostile, but rather peaceful and friendly sometimes. The most important recommendations include the interest in studying the foreign relations of the Seljuk state.
