The author argues that the film offers a fully-developed theory of photography, one that is consistent with Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology and which emphasizes the embodiedness and situatedness of ‘Operator’ and ‘Spectator’. Gelder","doi":"10.7202/044589AR","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.7202/044589AR","url":null,"abstract":"This essay seeks to examine the position of photography in contemporary art or, more specifically, the way photography now hovers between tableau and the ‘document’ Three methodological levels are considered: first, a co-textual reading of select images by Jeff Wall and Allan Sekula in relation to their titles; secondly, an examination of their various treatment of pictorial elements, remnants of a long-standing artistic tradition; thirdly, at the level of the meta-text, the same images are confronted with a much broader contextual relationship. Here, the differences between two modes of working in contemporary photography — singular tableau and (pseudo-) documentary montage — become clear. A historical flashback traces this current photographic paragone back to 16th Century Southern Netherlandish art. First, it revises the historiographic partition proposed by John Deely in Four Ages of Understanding (2001) by arguing that the moment marking the beginning of philosophical Modernity has been vividly recorded in Descartes’ Meditations on First Philosophy with the experiment with the wax. Second, an upshot of this historical study is that it helps make sense of Deely’s somewhat iconoclastic use of the words “subject” and “subjectivity” to designate mind-independent worldly things. The hope is that successfully accomplishing these twin tasks will give semiotic inquiry a better appreciation of its own history, as well as resources genial to furthering its ongoing development.","PeriodicalId":191586,"journal":{"name":"RSSI. C’est l’effet pragmatique (en l’occurrence le non-faire) que ces photos ont declenche ou les discours qu’elles ont suscites qu’on analyse dans ces pages. Dans les annees soixante-dix les historiens Brugioni et Poirer ont ainsi invoque l’inefficacite de la technique photographique de l’epoque pour justifier l’inaction des allies.
