In unit commitment (UC) these considerations are reflected in the form of hourly spinning reserve (SR) capacity. Spinning reserve, more often than not, is treated as soft constraint by using penalty methods in unit commitment literature. This doesn't guarantee a strict compliance of minimum hourly reserve constraint throughout the schedule period which implies decreased reliability of the system. This paper presents a hybrid stochastic search based approach for solving unit commitment (HSSUC) with hard reserve constraints. The method is a synergistic combination of genetic algorithms (GA) and simulated annealing (SA), thereby combining the advantages of both. Several other features are incorporated for faster convergence to better solution. For a given commitment, an analytical economic load dispatch (ELD) is employed to get the minimum operating cost in each hour. This speeds up the algorithm considerably over the iterative ELD methods that are time consuming. The algorithm has been tested and results have been compared with those presented in the literature. However, proportional sharing is not an inherent characteristic of the system. It is a rule enforced to attain uniqueness of the solution in a fair manner. Under proportionate tracing regime, the bilateral transactions can be classified as tractable, partially tractable or intractable, based on degree of tractability. In this paper, we develop the concept of optimal tracing whose objective is to enforce maximum tractability of bilateral transactions, while attaining least deviation from the proportionate sharing results, using multiplicity of solution space. The resulting optimization formulation is shown to be a sparse linear programming (LP) problem. A unified formulation that models lossy MW flow network and provides consistent results for generation and load tracing is presented. The maximum tractability is modeled as soft constraint in the formulation. It is mainly caused by high dimension of the optimization problem; standard centralized techniques here fail and cannot be employed. The other way how to solve the issue consists in the utilization of the hierarchical approaches. Method of the price coordination constitutes an interesting tool for the solution of the optimum allocation problem. It is based on the interaction balance between the interconnected subsystems. But the problematic of the interaction balance is defined only on the theoretical field and some practical implementations are not discussed in the literature. In this contribution, there are three newly designed algorithms based on the theoretical aspects of the interaction balance theorem. FPGA (field programmable gate arrays) is used for the system on chip (SOC) application to achieve a SOPC for the proposed design. The design is suitable for distribution or sub-transmission networks and can behave as extreme inverse or very inverse type of time overcurrent relay. The proposed relay follows standard inverse-time characteristics according to IEEE standard C37.112-1996. The details of hardware and software used for the design implementation are presented. The proposed nonlinear controllers are all based on complex model of generator set without ignoring the transient saliency of generator, and they all only feedback local measurements of the generator set. In the paper, the structural model of generator set is used to construct the relation between the local immeasurable variables of generator and the local measurements of generator set, and thus it is easy to transform the immeasurable variables into local measurements when designing strict decentralized controllers. Meanwhile, the ANN-inversion method is used to design the nonlinear controller in the paper. It envisages installation of appropriate shunt passive filter to remedy the power quality problems in a cost effective manner. For this purpose, a three-phase system feeding a thyristorised converter has been first taken for study at two different power levels. These systems have been analyzed with reference to IEEE 519 standards with and without the presence of shunt passive filters. The parameters used for the passive filters such as their VAR rating and the quality factor of the inductance play a major role in deciding the effectiveness of these filters. Energy efficient and electronically controlled automatic machines are sensitive to the deviations in the supply voltage. The quality of power supply has caused a direct economic impact on many industrial customers. At facilities where high degree of power quality and reliability is critical, any voltage surge, sag and momentary outage on the supply lasting more than a few cycles could cause several tools and production lines to malfunction. This paper presents two survey results of interruption cost and power quality requirement for the high-tech industry to identify the type of disturbances that generate productivity losses and to estimate the relevant damage. PQ costs for six categories of the high-tech industry are presented. The PQ costs of the whole high-tech park and a semiconductor company under different disturbance conditions are evaluated. Test results have indicated that the PQ costs of the high-tech industry are great and sensitive to the duration of the disturbance event. With proposed simultaneous AC-DC transmission it is possible to load these line very close to their thermal limits. The conductors are allowed to carry superimposed DC current along with AC. The added DC power flow does not cause any transient instability. This paper presents the feasibility of converting a double circuit AC line into simultaneous AC-DC power transmission line to enhance power transfer as well as to get the advantages of parallel AC-DC transmission. Simulation studies are carried out for the coordinated control as well as independent control of AC and DC power transmission. No alterations of conductors, insulator strings and towers of the original line are needed. Substantial gain in the loadability of the line is obtained.
