Maximum loadability margin is used as an index for voltage security assessment. In this paper model trees estimate the loadability margins in terms of continuous values. Learning states for MT are generated by computer simulation using continuation power flow and limits on reactive generation are considered while calculating loadability margins. Once the model tree is built it acquires the knowledge on the basis of which it estimates post-contingent maximum loadability margins efficiently and within the desired accuracy. The computation speed of this method is very high (ultra-fast), hence it can be more useful for real time applications. To make proper decisions, most of the relaying algorithms require the fundamental frequency phasor information immune to decaying DC effect and harmonics. Conventional Fourier and LES phasor estimation algorithms are affected by the presence of decaying-exponential transient in the fault signal. This paper presents modified Fourier algorithm, which effectively eliminates the decaying DC component and the harmonics present in the fault signal. The decaying DC parameters are estimated by means of an out-of-band filtering technique. The decaying DC offset and harmonics are removed by means of a simple computational procedure which involves designing of two sets of orthogonal digital DFT filters tuned at different frequencies and by creating three off-line look-up tables. The technique was tested for different decay rates of the decaying DC component. The proposed technique is compared with the conventional mimic plus full cycle DFT algorithm. The results show that the proposed technique has a faster convergence to the desired value compared to the conventional mimic plus DFT algorithms over a wide range of decay rates. In this environment, management of GENCOs and grid is separated, each maximizing its own benefit. The objective function for the GENCO is to sell electricity as much as possible, at proper time according to the market clearing price forecast. Various technical constraints such as generation capacity, duration of maintenances and maintenance continuity are being taken into account. The objective function of ISO is to maximize the reliability throughout the year; provided the energy purchase cost should be smaller than a predetermined amount when the units of GENCOs are out for maintenance. Therefore there are two objective functions for finding an optimum maintenance schedule in restructured power systems. This ANN-SVPWM controller completely covers the undermodulation and overmodulation modes with operation extended linearly and smoothly up to square wave (six-step) by using theory of modulation between the limit trajectories. The ANN controller has the advantage of the very fast implementation of an SVM algorithm that can increase the switching frequency of power switches of the static converter. Furthermore, a ANN diagnosis method for real-time fault detection of power switches is proposed in this paper. The ANN controller uses the individual training strategy with the fixed weight and supervised models. The complete ANN-SVPWM and diagnostic controller can be used in power applications such as APF, STATCOM, UPFC and motor drives. In a deregulated power industry, the real time pricing of real and reactive power has emerged as an important issue to create fair open access in the electricity markets. These prices have a great impact on efficient and economic operation of electricity markets. Their accurate determination can send the signal for secure operation of the system. In this paper, the effect of optimally located FACTS devices: static VAr compensator (SVC), thyristor controlled series capacitor (TCSC) and thyristor controlled phase angle regulator (TCPAR) on real time prices has been studied. A mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) based model is proposed for optimal placement of FACTS devices along with calculating active and reactive power marginal prices for an IEEE 14 bus system. The impact of placing FACTS devices on marginal prices and social welfare is observed. The results show that the first order mechanical model gives more optimistic TSA than the third order electro-mechanical model under the specified simulation conditions. Motor mechanical load characteristics have different impacts on the TSA, which depends on network and disturbance characteristics. Transient voltage instability occurs firstly and then generator angle instability occurs after a critical motor load percentage under specified simulation conditions. The motor undervoltage tripping and reconnection relay may be propitious to transient voltage stability but not to transient angle stability after a large disturbance. After completing the design, it is tested on a real power system by modeling the network in a power system studies software.
