The paper deals with the sliding mode control of single phase DVR for voltage sag/swell correction. A sliding mode controller is designed and developed for a single phase DVR. Using sliding mode control to the DVR, additional sag/swell detection method is eliminated. This improves the dynamic response of the DVR and also DVR is able to compensate for any variation in source voltage. Usage of sliding mode control to DVR, makes it multifunctional, such as compensation for voltage sag, swell, voltage flicker and voltage harmonics as well. The operator/system engineer at the control centre undergoes a variety of muscular stresses while working for long durations, which degrades the quality of work. The proper design of the control center will ensure ease of functioning for the operator without experiencing stress in vital body parts. Care should be taken to install the different equipment for monitoring and controlling the power system in suitable atmosphere and housing. For generator maintenance the objective of the ISO is to maintain adequate level of reliability throughout the operational period (for which Bender's decomposition technique is used) and the objective of the GENCO is to maximize profit or to minimize loss in profit (for which transmission constrained price based unit commitment, TCPBUC, based on Lagrangian relaxation method is used). For line maintenance minimum cost model bender's technique with adequate level of reliability is used. A coordinating technique using penalty factors is incorporated to converge the conflicting objectives. The transmission constraints are modeled using DC sensitivity factors. The IPQC enhances the input power factor close to unity and also reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) of AC mains current. The converter provides bi-directional power flow capability during regenerative braking resulting in energy efficient operation of the drive. It also provides constant DC-link voltage during transient and steady state conditions. This paper presents intelligent control scheme together with conventional control scheme by fuzzy logic approach, to overcome the problems with uncertainties in the structure encountered with classical model based design. To adjust the speed of the direct torque control of induction motor drive, two control approaches are developed and applied. The first control approach combines the variable structure theory with fuzzy logic concept and in the second approach; a fuzzy state feedback controller is developed based on pole placement technique. In this paper an effective short-term hydrothermal scheduling algorithm based on a hybrid evolutionary and a conventional technique is proposed. In the algorithm the thermal units on the system are represented by an equivalent unit. The power balance constraints, total water discharge constraints, reservoir volume constraints and constraints on operating limits of the equivalent thermal and hydro units are taken into account. The proposed method is developed in such a way that a standard adaptive evolutionary programming method is acting as a base level search and it directs the search towards the optimum region. Thereafter local optimization by direct search and systematic reduction in size of search region method is next employed to do fine tuning. The algorithm is demonstrated through an example of standard test system with a hydro plant and an equivalent thermal plant for a time schedule of six 12-hour intervals. In India alone, the estimated capacity of captive power plants is nearly 20,000 MW and most of the practical power plants are run sub-optimally by operators (albeit experienced ones). This calls for low-cost dedicated automatic controllers for the efficient management of captive power. Some studies have been reported in recent literature for the power management of islanded power plants, ad hoc network etc., but most studies are confined to computer simulations only. This paper reports a novel practical implementation of a dedicated real-time fuzzy logic controller on a low cost field programmable gate array chip for the management of 125 kW of captive power available from a medium capacity diesel generator set. This paper presents a new decoupled-quadratic load flow (DQLF) approach for adjustment of parameters of SVC. The DQLF model can calculate effectively the SVC susceptance and resulting firing angle using a simple quadratic equation derived using real and reactive power injections at the SVC bus. The resulting quadratic equation, can easily evaluate system voltage stability margin. The model makes use of conventional fast decoupled load flow (FDLF) algorithm for calculation of voltage phase angle corrections. The proposed approach eliminates the formation and modification of B\" matrix in FDLF models and offers considerable saving in the execution times. It is found to be very reliable for Q-adjusted studies and ill-conditioned cases. The DQLF model offers 50% faster convergence than FDLF model, when applied to large systems, having a large number of generator buses. The validity of the proposed algorithm for SVC parameter adjustment is tested on IEEE 14 bus system. The stability margins are evaluated using the proposed quadratic equation, and compared with traditional Q-V sensitivity model.
