Figures often contain a dense amount of information and readers rely on accompanying text to help guide them to the important takeaways. Captions provide the reader with the context needed to interpret visualizations and help tie together the written and visual narratives. Alt-text also plays a role in making the visualization accessible to a broader audience, translating visual cues for those with visual impairments. However, the art of writing captions and other accompanying text for visualizations has rarely been explicitly taught as a companion to the pedagogy of effective data visualization. We describe a variety of classroom activities and assignments that explicitly focus on what makes an effective caption, interpreted broadly, and that build awareness for a variety of audiences for data-related findings.","PeriodicalId":189852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IASE 2021 Satellite Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133165036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We also predicted that people more interested in statistics would be more correct in risk comprehension, which, in turn, would mediate the relationship between probabilistic reasoning ability, reflective ability, interest in statistics and not precautionary behaviors. Participants were 193 Psychology students enrolled in an undergraduate introductory statistics course at the University of Florence and they completed an online survey during the lockdown (March 2020). The hypothesized model showed a good fit and all coefficients were statistically significant and in the expected directions. This study shows the importance of statistical literacy for increasing support to fight the coronavirus, through the comprehension of information about COVID-19 data and risks.","PeriodicalId":189852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IASE 2021 Satellite Conference","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133741748","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Students should be able to make decisions in the presence of uncertainty and to interpret quantitative information presented to them in the course of their professional and personal lives. This paper highlights terms such as herd immunity or efficacy that have emerged in the popular media since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and connects them to activities involving statistics and mathematics. Examples illustrate how simulation can be a vehicle for developing understanding of statistical concepts related to the pandemic and how simulation can engage students in reasoning from data to make sense of the world in which we live.","PeriodicalId":189852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IASE 2021 Satellite Conference","volume":"27 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115082359","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This multi-case study attempts to begin to understand why, by exploring concept images for the concept of statistical distribution. In this study of three teachers and three expert statisticians based in England, the concept images of the six participants were mapped through individual semi-structured interviews and then compared. The key differences identified between the expert statisticians and the teachers related to how conceptual elements were connected and navigated, with teachers relying heavily on their knowledge of assessment items for this. Additional similarities and differences are discussed along with some implications for professional development and further research.","PeriodicalId":189852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IASE 2021 Satellite Conference","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132889484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents an account of a series of online workshops initiated by the author in June 2020 from the forum of the Pak Institute of Statistical Training and Research (PISTAR), Lahore, Pakistan, the focus of which has so far been on topics such as ‘Tidyverse’, ‘Machine Learning’ and ‘Data Science Ideas for Aspiring Statistical Consultants’. The once-a-month online workshop series is exciting for the organizers and the participants alike as it is able to attract participants from various continents of the world, particularly from the developing countries. The congenial atmosphere and high-quality content of the workshops have led to confidence-building and trust that has prompted the launch of preparatory sessions which, together with the workshops, are serving as a vehicle for promoting interest in data science.","PeriodicalId":189852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IASE 2021 Satellite Conference","volume":"190 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131705066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These goals require action on a global scale by governments, companies, and civil society to eradicate poverty and create a life with dignity and opportunities for all within the limits of the planet. The works developed by several teachers over several years and which meet these objectives in one way or another are presented. Having literate citizens in statistical terms meets the goals for 2030. Also, it involves the whole of society, as it includes the necessary skills to understand the statistical information that we face every day.","PeriodicalId":189852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IASE 2021 Satellite Conference","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121378265","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the age of the COVID-19 pandemic, teaching from a distance has become a necessity. Many instructors, including GTAs and GRIs, need to adapt to new technologies and reconsider pedagogical decisions. This paper presents our experiences from a graduate teaching fellowship program created because of the pandemic. The program had two major components: 1) pedagogical workshops attended by teaching fellows from multiple disciplines across the university and 2) one-on-one mentoring by a faculty member from the fellow’s primary discipline. Here, we provide a unique look at graduate training from both the perspective of the mentor and the mentee. We share a sample training curriculum and propose recommendations for those interested in implementing teaching training opportunities for graduate students.","PeriodicalId":189852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IASE 2021 Satellite Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122107682","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results obtained from an online survey among students showed the effectiveness of the online method for teaching statistics and the positive attitude of students for this alternative method of education. There were no significant differences between face-to-face and online teaching of statistics related subjects in terms of perceived efficiency, engagement of students or attainment of learning objectives. The study reinforces the possibility of using E-learning for statistics related subjects, with even better efficiency than the traditional method of teaching reported for tasks involving statistical software. An assessment of advantages, disadvantages and development of the online classes is also provided. Thus, the paper draws on important good practices from online teaching of statistics that could also be used for traditional teaching.","PeriodicalId":189852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IASE 2021 Satellite Conference","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132034223","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We describe a new course in statistical theory that was developed as part of our consideration of this question. The course is a core requirement in a new curriculum for undergraduate students enrolled in statistics programs of study. Problem solving and critical thinking are developed through both mathematical and computational thinking and all ideas are motivated through questions to be answered from large, open and messy data. Central to the development of the course is the tenet that the use of computation is as fundamental to statistical thinking as the use of mathematics. We describe the course, including its connection to the learning outcomes of our new statistics program of study, and the multiple ways we use and integrate computation.","PeriodicalId":189852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IASE 2021 Satellite Conference","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129828772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This growth has been motivated by the increase in the general literacy of the populations and by the general improvement of living conditions. Quantitative literacy, and statistical literacy in particular, are more relevant nowadays, given the current pandemic context of COVID-19, where the information burden increased, and citizens need more and more skills to interpret numbers and learn what is hidden behind them. In this paper, we provide a summary of the best practices of some Portuguese-speaking countries that can be seen as inspiring a benchmark that allows the promotion of statistical literacy in other communities that are united by the same language. In addition, we emphasize the role of the current pandemic in the evolution of the activities that promote statistical literacy.","PeriodicalId":189852,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the IASE 2021 Satellite Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128561594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
