The visual and olfactory signals play an important role in perception of taste. We use visual cues from color to identify and judge the quality and taste of what we eat. Color has a major impact on taste perception which seems to influence our taste buds more than olfactory sense. Aim and Objective: The objective of present study was to assess the influence of color of sucrose solution on its taste perception. Materials and Methods: About 53 female subjects in the age group of 17–20 years were asked to taste a fixed quantity of the sucrose solution of six different colors of same sucrose concentration. The subjects were asked to rate them according to sweetness scale of 1–10. The mean and standard deviation of the scores was obtained. Results: The purple colored solution was rated as highest sweetness (6.09 ± 2.09) followed by blue (5.9 ± 1.9), green (5.62 ± 1.97), red (5.11 ± 1.63), and yellow (4.20 ± 1.75). Conclusion: The clear sucrose solution was rated the same as the purple solution. The colors like purple and blue were perceived sweeter compared to red and yellow indicating that color of the solution does influence the perception of its taste.","PeriodicalId":18969,"journal":{"name":"National Journal of Physiology, Pharmacy and Pharmacology","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89758200","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Viral infections are the most frequent cause of pediatric diarrhea, and the most common form of treatment is the replacement of lost fluid and electrolyte balance. Probiotic supplementation in conventional therapy is likely to result in improved outcomes. Aim and Objective: To study the efficacy of Saccharomyces boulardii (a probiotic) as add-on treatment for pediatric acute diarrhea. Materials and Methods: This was an open-label prospective study. We have included a total of 40 children (n = 40) who met the inclusion criteria for admission and were randomly divided into two groups. One group (group 1: n = 20) received standard treatment, while group 2: n = 20 received probiotics in addition to standard treatment. Before administering the probiotic powder to the children, the parents were advised to add it to some water or milk. The duration of the diarrhea and the consistency of the stools were used as outcome indicators. Results: The duration of diarrhea in the probiotic-treated group was 3.8 days and 5.1 days in the standard therapy group. The first semi-liquid stools typically appear after 3.3–1.6 days in the standard therapy group and 2.0–0.56 days in the probiotic treatment group. The outcomes were statistically significant. Conclusion: S. boulardii, a probiotic, is beneficial in shortening the length of diarrhea and the time it takes for the first semi-liquid stools to develop by 1 day.","PeriodicalId":18969,"journal":{"name":"National Journal of Physiology, Pharmacy and Pharmacology","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136366264","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease affecting mainly large joints. Pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility are the cardinal features of OA. Treatment goals of RA are pain relief, slowing the progression of joint inflammation and prevention of joint disability or deformity, whereas those of OA are immediate relief of symptoms and improving joint function. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) and disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDS) are used to treat above conditions. Long treatment is associated with development of ADR. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of ADR patients treating for arthritis. Aims and Objectives: The objective of the study was as follows: (i) To assess the prevalence of use of drugs and drug classes in RA and OA; (ii) to assess the prevalence of adverse events (ADE) of prescribed drugs; and (iii) causality assessment of ADE. Materials and Methods: This study was an observational study of ADE of drug prescribed among 100 arthritis patients in a tertiary care teaching hospital, India. Patients diagnosed with RA or OA with or without comorbidities were enrolled in the study based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Causality assessment severity was assessed from Hartwig and colleagues’ criteria and preventable ADE was defined by Schumock and Thornton’s criteria. Results: Out of 100 arthritis cases, the prevalence of OA was more than RA. OA was more commonly seen in males and RA in females. Arthritis was more prevalent in the age group of 36–65 years. NSAIDs were the first-choice drug in arthritis. Among NSAIDS, diclofenac was the commonly used drug for monotherapy in OA and methotrexate was commonly used in RA. Sixty-eight ADEs were detected in 51 patients. The prevalence of ADE was 35.7%. Thirty out of 68 ADEs (44.1%) were preventable. NSAIDS and DMARDS resulted in ADEs by 23 (29.6%) and 24 (34.8%) events, respectively. Common affected organs were cutaneous manifestations, gastrointestinal tract, and eyes which accounted for 20 (29.4%), 18 (26.5%), and 8 events (11.6%), respectively. Continuation of the suspected drug was noted in 42 ADEs (61.8%), classified as severity level 1 and 2a-b, and 43 ADEs (63.2%) were completely or partially resolved during the study period. Conclusion: ADEs are common in RA and OA patients with the prevalence of 35.7%. ADEs should be monitored properly and reported to prevent irrational use of drugs.","PeriodicalId":18969,"journal":{"name":"National Journal of Physiology, Pharmacy and Pharmacology","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135059026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Twenty-one channels EEG with EKG and EMG were recorded in all subjects during pre-meditative, meditative, and post-meditative state at an interval of 20 min. Qualitative EEG was analyzed for the appearance of wave patterns based on different voltages and frequencies. Results: High voltage alpha rhythm was observed in the majority of subjects during pre-meditation and theta waves in most subjects during meditation. During meditation, their minds progress further to a deep state of calmness and relaxation as indicated by the appearance of theta waves. Even delta waves were observed during meditation in some of the subjects indicating a phase similar to a deep sleep. Conclusion: Stress and mental unrest are major problem in the present era which is responsible for many non-communicable diseases. Regular meditation is a very important de-stressor and should be regularly practiced to lead a happy and peaceful life.","PeriodicalId":18969,"journal":{"name":"National Journal of Physiology, Pharmacy and Pharmacology","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134979781","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
