This idea is largely\u0000 similar to the concept of the wholeness of life that is found in documents of the\u0000 World Council of Churches. Attention is given to the results of efforts to improve\u0000 the quality of life in Africa through modernization during the development era, as\u0000 well as to the quality of life in post-apartheid South Africa. The consumer culture\u0000 has a strong influence on rich and poor, but there are different forms of resistance\u0000 to modernisation. These forms of resistance often become destructive. Veldsman
What does the affective-cognitive dimension of being human\u0000 entails? Many contemporary scholars from theological (especially religious\u0000 experience) perspectives as well as from evolutionary biological (especially\u0000 neuroscientific) perspectives have made exciting inroads in the on-going\u0000 anthropological discourses on this very dimension of being human. My article\u0000 partially makes work of their respective contributions. For the former theological\u0000 perspective I will utilize Pascal and Stoker. For the latter neuroscientific\u0000 perspective I will concentrate on LeDoux and Damasio. I call my contribution an\u0000 evolutionary-theological re-conceptualisation of religious experience for which I\u0000 make use of Pascal’s famous words from his Pensees (1670) “The\u0000 heart has its reasons which reason does not know” and “(i)t is the heart which\u0000 experiences God and not the reason”. Therefore the title: With reasons of the heart\u0000 before God. Such a formulation however immediately raises the question: Does such an\u0000 emphasis on the “heart” re-introduce irrationality into the scientific scholarly\u0000 dialogue? The answer is clear: Yes, it does. It is argued that it should be\u0000 re-introduced constructively into contemporary science-theology discourses in order\u0000 – on the one hand – to critically address the very accusation, and – on the other\u0000 hand – to present us with a far richer, deeper understanding of personhood. From the\u0000 constructive integration of the two perspectives, namely the theological and\u0000 neuroscientific the words of Pascal is finally re-formulated from an\u0000 evolutionary-theological perspective and qualified in which emotion is presented as\u0000 the embodiment of the logic of survival.

I argue that the Protestant and\u0000 Catholic leaders’ response to Bingu wa Mutharika’s government’s violation of human\u0000 rights was influenced by a number of factors: first, the Church leaders’ perceptions\u0000 of Wa Mutharika’s uneasiness about their critical voice. According to Matthew it seems that Jesus did not\u0000 perform any purity rituals after touching the impure woman and girl. Such negligence\u0000 would have caused serious repercussions amongst the spectators. In the Sermon on the\u0000 Mount Jesus explicitly states that He did not come to abolish the Law, but in this\u0000 double story Jesus apparently abrogates purity regulations. It is suggested that\u0000 Matthew purposefully describes these events to demonstrate how these Laws found\u0000 their fulfilment in Jesus. Jesus is depicted as Emmanuel and Saviour. Instead of Him\u0000 being polluted by touching these persons, Jesus cleanses the impure woman and raises\u0000 the dead girl to life. As Holy One purity flowed from Him to the defiled persons, so\u0000 that they could be cleansed without Him being polluted. These acts of Jesus form\u0000 part of the coming of the Kingdom of heaven. By accepting Jesus as their saviour,\u0000 the Matthean community shares the benefits of his purifying power. Their purity is\u0000 no longer dependent on external purity regulations, but on the cleansing power of\u0000 Jesus, the Holy One.

Therefore the\u0000 author explores two basic kinds of attitudes towards human rights, namely 1) forms\u0000 of human rights optimism – e.g. the argument that globalisation as such leads to a\u0000 universal acknowledgement of them – and 2) variants of human rights scepticism, in\u0000 which the author sees those rights practically disregarded, the “Western” concept\u0000 challenged, and a human rights exceptionalism spreading.
