Artists with similar deviations, reflected their dissimilitaries to art as an echo of their perception of the universe, reached artistic authenticity and existed with their unique and pioneering identities by creating art movements. Artist Neil Harbisson who has by birth achromatopsia challenged perceptual norms by bringing together Art and Science. Harbisson never needed color for his art or daily life. But when situations requiring color knowledge met his curiosity, he invented his own solution. Recent scientific developments allow to eliminate most of the obsctacles with supports such as prosthesis, implants, special glasses. Harbisson heared colors with a system consisted of a sensor, which receives color frequencies, linked to a chip transplanted in his brain, which translates the color data to voice data. Pioneer of the Cyborg Art, Harbisson combined paint and music; created in various fields and also as an activist championed human sustainibility through adaptation to Nature. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri is a novel about the challenges and difficulties of a Bengali couple who travel to the United States to build a life. The novel deals with the concepts of cultural identity, rootlessness, tradition, and family expectations in a straightforward style. Memory, nostalgia, loss, and longing are some of the themes addressed in this novel. Ashoke and Ashima, first generation immigrants, come to the U.S. hoping for a better life, but the past haunts them like a shadow, reminding them of their origins. On the other hand, unlike them, the children of this family cannot form ties with India, but they are not accepted as citizens of America, to which they want to belong. In other words, the identity crisis in the novel manifests itself in different ways in the first and second generation immigrants. The purpose of this article is to examine the complicated cultural interactions and identity crises as presented in modern cultural discourse. This essay is an attempt to examine the attractions of the American way of life as well as the tug of war between two separate cultures through a comparative lens. In addition, this essay attempts to address the problems of identity and cultural conflict faced by first and second generation immigrants.","PeriodicalId":187770,"journal":{"name":"Ulakbilge Dergisi","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114691688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When women who are given only the role of a wife and mother begin to demand freedom and legal rights, the basis of feminism appears. This study applies liberal feminist approach to Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper (1892) in order to analyse the gender roles in terms of patriarchal ideology of separate spheres. After giving birth to a baby, the narrator is diagnosed with hysteria by her husband John who is a physician. She is also prescribed a ‘rest cure’ for three months in the attic of an isolated house. The ‘rest cure’ causes her obsession with the yellow wallpaper and slowly drives her mad due to the limitation of thinking and of raising the consciousness of female in private sphere. To be imprisoned in a room may have enormous risks of disappointment, madness, and suicide. In order to limit a woman’s participation in the intellectual and public sphere, masculine science of nineteenth century’s patriarchal society converts ‘an angel in the house’ into ‘the madwoman in the attic’ under the name of ‘rest cure’. Gilman suggests that a woman can only free herself if her financial conditions are radically changed through finally installing a dialectical movement between private sphere and public sphere.","PeriodicalId":187770,"journal":{"name":"Ulakbilge Dergisi","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122144919","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The foundations of the neoclassical understanding began to be laid before the middle of the eighteenth century, and the reason for the reactivity was the excessive ornamentation and artificiality of the Baroque and Rococo before it. In the century it emerged, important developments in various fields laid the groundwork for Neoclassicism, and especially the effects of ancient cities unearthed in the archaeological area on artists formed the mainstay of the style. In this way, the artistic qualities of antiquity were brought to the fore. Ancient Greek and Roman works have shown their existence as a version of the updated worldview and a new aesthetic understanding. Its effects are seen in many branches of art, including the field of painting. By praising the noble simplicity and quiet splendor created by antiquity, pure and clear works, technically isolated from the effects of light, in which linearity comes to the fore, were produced. In the works of David, who is the most prominent artist of this style, which adopts order and limitations as its rules, dignified examples of a rational, moral and noble spirit are selected. In the artist's productions, symbolic images have served as elements that contribute to the semantic dimension of the expression. With the stable stance of Jacques Louis David, who was the official artist of the French Revolution as an extension of the Age of Enlightenment, the patriotism, self-sacrifice, and heroism ideals of the new classicism were articulated with the identity of the Romans formed with the ideas of virtue and pro-republic freedom in an original and updated aestheticized form. The transfer of heroic stories, which is an important feature of the movement, has taken its place in David's hands at a high level of maturity.","PeriodicalId":187770,"journal":{"name":"Ulakbilge Dergisi","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126755722","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Greek philosophy, literature and mythology as well as art and architecture had a major impact on artists especially in the periods of Renaissance and Neoclassicism. It is interesting to see that Ancient Greek sculpture has still been inspiring for the 20th century western painters, sculptors and performance artists. This article will focus on the visual representations of four statues -Apollo Belvedere, Venus of Milo, Nike of Samothrace and Sleeping Ariadne- in the imagination of artists working in various styles. Depictions of aforenamed statues and their novel and distinctive interpretations had been the subject of this descriptive research. 20th century creations have been scanned for traces of Ancient Greek sculpture. These timeless paragons of Classical and Hellenistic periods acquired a fresh life thanks to the 20th century art world’s admiration and respect for the Ancient Greek sculpture. The present study estimates the natural growth rate and analyzes whether the natural growth rate is endogenous or not. But, different from the previous studies, the present study makes estimations in the conditions that capital-output ratio remains constant. According to the results of the study, the steady-state or natural growth rate is 5.71% in Turkey for the period 1969-2006. Moreover, the natural growth rate becomes 9.51% in the boom periods.
