Due to the random nature of the fiber PMD, this degradation can not be fully compensated. In this paper, we develop an analytic and intuitive pulse degradation formulism taking into account all major fiber transmission impairments including chromatic dispersion, nonlinearity, and PMD and the interaction among them. Benefited from its rigorous but intuitive nature, this formulism provides great insights in understanding the system performance impairments, for example, due to fiber PMD effects. In particular, we discuss the impact of fiber PMD for low and high data rates, where the mechanisms of performance degradation can be seen as characteristically different. The effectiveness of various PMD mitigation schemes in these situations is also discussed.","PeriodicalId":187091,"journal":{"name":"2012 Proceedings of IEEE Southeastcon","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130462053","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a GEB application called GEFEML (Genetic and Evolutionary Feature Extraction - Machine Learning). GEFEML incorporates a machine learning technique, referred to as cross validation, in an effort to evolve a population of local binary pattern feature extractors (FEs) that generalize well to unseen subjects. GEFEML was trained on a dataset taken from the FRGC database and generalized well on two test sets of unseen subjects taken from the FRGC and MORPH databases. GEFEML evolved FEs that used fewer patches, had comparable accuracy, and were 54% less expensive in terms of computational complexity.","PeriodicalId":187091,"journal":{"name":"2012 Proceedings of IEEE Southeastcon","volume":"85 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133823972","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One problem is buffering feedback loops where searching for the optimal gate replacement is difficult due to interdependencies. Another problem is buffering the MTNCL sleep signal tree which requires certain degrees of prediction while the gate selection is not yet certain. Optimization is achieved by adhering to a specific timing constraint throughout the design utilizing a set of appropriately sized gates. A custom tool has been developed for resolving these issues and automates the process of gate replacement and buffering. The tool combines an iterative approach to gate replacement and a method for inserting starting points in buffering feedback loops. The sleep signal tree is processed using a similar approach. This flow has been successfully applied to a number of test circuits.","PeriodicalId":187091,"journal":{"name":"2012 Proceedings of IEEE Southeastcon","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124313397","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A critical component of these advanced diagnostic systems is the decision fusion software. The purpose of the decision fusion software system is to increase diagnostic reliability, accuracy, and improve safety of the engine operation. It also helps decrease diagnostic false alarms hence save maintenance time. This paper focuses on the development and implementation of decision-fusion software system for enhancing the diagnosis of turbine engines. The paper describes how a fuzzy logic system is used to predict and diagnose turbine engine health conditions at different levels based on the health parameters, i.e., efficiency and flow. In this paper, the decision fusion software system was broken down into two subsystems namely, Decision Making Subsystem (DMS) and Decision Fusion Subsystem (DFS). The goal of the DMS is to predict the health condition of the engine components. While the objective of DFS is to assess the overall health condition of the engine based on information provided by the DMS. The test results of developed fusion software system are promising in providing reliable diagnostics for turbine engine, subsequently reducing maintenance cost. All the system development steps and testing results on the commercial grade turbine engine model C-MAPSS will be presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":187091,"journal":{"name":"2012 Proceedings of IEEE Southeastcon","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127539657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We will discuss the power and real-time performance requirements of the embedded platforms. We will outline the path to developing and analyzing bio-medical benchmark suite and identify the computational and data characteristics of a selected application - both for implantable devices and for external portable data processing platforms. First, six classification benchmarks are created using Exhaustive Search (ES) to select the best feature subsets. The subset selections have been done within double (nested) cross-validation procedures guaranteeing realistic accuracy predictions to unseen examples. Next, seven filter FR approaches are compared and ranked in respect to the top five best feature subsets for each data set. This paper also introduces a method for quantifying and comparing FR results. The results hint that using Gini index or scatter ratios leads to rankings closest to ES on average.","PeriodicalId":187091,"journal":{"name":"2012 Proceedings of IEEE Southeastcon","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121286826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider the multi-commodity flow problem, in which each commodity (origin-destination pair) uses k link-disjoint paths to satisfy flow rate demands. The congestion in the links is used to calculate the prices of the links which affect the cost of travelling. We solve minimum-cost linear-programming to control path flow rate routing decisions triggered by the changes in the cost coefficients. We conclude that efficient path flow rate re-routing in response to the congestion in the links could contribute significantly to network survivability.","PeriodicalId":187091,"journal":{"name":"2012 Proceedings of IEEE Southeastcon","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116128534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
