Methodology and results: The hydroethanol extracts of Bauhinia rufescens L. and Euphorbia hirta L.; two plants of the Chadian traditional pharmacopoeia used in the treatment of infantile diarrhoea and gastroenteritis in adults were submitted to in vitro tests in order to highlight their antibacterial and antifungal properties. The method of microdilution in liquid medium coupled with spreading on agar medium was used for the tests. The microbial strains used consisted of 13 hospital bacterial strains and 6 reference strains including a yeast strain of the Candida albicans ATCC 90028 species. The results obtained confirm the antimicrobial properties of Bauhinia rufescens L. and Euphorbia hirta L. because at 50 mg/ml, they inhibit 100% the growth of gram positive and Gram-negative bacilli tested. On the other hand, for Candida albicans ATCC 90028, it is only the extract of Euphorbia hirta that was active at 50 mg/ml. Conclusion: In view of these results, we can say that these plants have an antibacterial activity and that their use in traditional phytotherapy is justified.","PeriodicalId":186601,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diseases and Medicinal Plants","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-04-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130697277","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given the many side effects associated with conventional anti-inflammatory drugs, the use of herbal medicines would benefit patients. Mitracarpus scaber (Rubiaceae), is a herb whose leaves are used to treat skin conditions and relieve pain in the limbs. To elucidate the traditional use of the aerial parts of M. scaber, the present study was conducted on arthritic rats induced by Freund's complete adjuvant. Arthritis was induced in Wistar rats by injecting Freund's complete adjuvant solution into the right hind leg. Diclofenac and Celebrex were chosen as reference molecules. Administration of Diclofenac (5 mg/kg body weight) and Celebrex (10 mg/kg body weight) and the aqueous extract of the aerial parts of M. scaber at doses of 200; 400 and 800 mg/kg body weight began the day after injection and continued for 20 days. Leg swelling, biochemical and hematological parameters as well as fibrinogen levels were evaluated. Oral administration of the extract significantly suppressed inflammatory responses in the joints of arthritic rats. It did not cause liver damage in the rats during the twenty (20) days of treatment. These results indicate that the aqueous extract of the aerial parts of M. scaber prevents the pathological development of arthritis in rats. The active ingredients present in the extract could be potential agents for the treatment of inflammation and arthritis.","PeriodicalId":186601,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diseases and Medicinal Plants","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-03-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129864194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Oxidative stress has a major effects in diabetes and the difficulties associated with it including hepatotoxicity. Newbouldia laevis is a traditional medicinal plant known to possess antimicrobial, anticonvulsant, sedative, analgesic, anti-inflammatory and antidiarrheal properties. However, there is scanty information on its utilization in diabetes management. This investigation was carried out to determine the potentials of aqueous ethanolic extract of Newbouldia laevis leaves to protect hepatic tissues of rats from diabetes caused by oxidative stress and hapatocellular injury. Diabetic condition was effected in rats by single intraperitoneal injection of alloxan. Rats were slaughtered by cervical dislocation after administration of Newbouldia leave extracts at dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg bw for 21 days. Hepatic tissues were analysed for catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) activities, lipid peroxidation, lipid profile and protein content were also evaluated. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) which are hepatic biomarkers were analysed in the blood serum. Significant reduction (p<0.05) of GSH, catalase, and SOD activities were effected by diabetes induction, also rise in hepatic biomarkers and lipid peroxidation was observed. Treatment with extract at 200 mg/kg caused significant (p<0.05) increased activities of the studied antioxidant biomarkers and reduced lipid peroxidation. It also led to a reduced activity of hepatic biomarkers. These results shows antioxidant protective properties of N. laevis leaves against rise in oxidative stress and hepatocellular injury in diabetic rat’s hepatic tissues at lower dose, indicating that the extract may possess antioxidant activities in diabetics.","PeriodicalId":186601,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diseases and Medicinal Plants","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134109866","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

(Balanitaceae), a tropical plant is well known for its widespread uses in Burkina Faso traditional medicine. The present study aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of B. aegyptiaca trough the turpentine-induced inflammation. The aqueous acetone extracts of galls and leaves have been used to test the anti-inflammatory effects on adult male Wistar-Bratislava albino rats. Total leukocytes count was performed with an optical microscope (Olympus), using a Burcker-Turk counting-chamber. The nitric oxides synthesis (NOx), the total oxidative status (TOS) and total antioxidant response (TAR) of the serum were measured using a colorimetric assay. The results have showed that all the extracts reduced significantly (p<0.0001) the total leukocytes and total nitrites and nitrates levels in the rats serum. The oxidative stress evaluation showed that the treatment with any dose of B. aegyptiaca gall and leaf extracts was significantly decreased (p<0.0001) the total oxidative status. Moreover, these extracts have been prevented the Turpentine oil induced inflammation by increasing the total antioxidant response. TAR increasing did correlated to TOS decrease by comparison with the inflammation group. In general, an interesting anti-inflammatory effect was found in this study with the greatest activity found in the gall extracts. B. aegyptiaca could then be a potential source of natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.","PeriodicalId":186601,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diseases and Medicinal Plants","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128812953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The most devastative among these is Taro leaf blight cause by the pathogen Phytophthora colocasiae. The pathogen can cause rapid complete defoliation and crop destruction and under some circumstances, the disease can attack harvested corms and cause heavy losses during storage. Endophytes constitute an important source of bioactive secondary metabolites and enzymes. Based on their phytochemical properties, they can be used as a source of antifungal agent for the treatment of some infectious diseases. In order to evaluate the impact of endophytes on plant defence, in vitro evaluation of the growth effect of endophytic fungi against P. colocasiae was conducted in dual culture, after isolating and screening endophytic fungi from L. camara leaves for their production of some extracellular enzymes (amylases, lipases, laccases, protease and cellulose) and some secondary metabolites (tannins, saponins, phenols, cardiac glycoside) using standard procedures. In-vitro culture techniques with Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) as culture medium were used to isolate endophytes from L. camara leaf tissues. Isolate identification was done using macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. These isolates were then tested in vitro to evaluate their morphological growth effect against P. colocasiae via the dual culture. Five endophytic fungi were isolated from Lantana camara leaves and coded L1, L2, L3, L4 and L5. The L2, L3 and L5 strains were filamentous and showed coenocytic hyphae which bore some structures’ called conidiosphores identified as Cladosporium sp. L1 strain was filamentous fungi having clamp connections hyphae (bridge-like growth) above hyphal septa and brown sclerotia. L4 strain showed very tiny interwoven and tightly parked mycelia. As enzyme activities, all the strains were found to produce amylase and not protease. L1, L3 and L4 were able to synthesis laccase while L5 produced cellulose and lipase. For the secondary metabolites, all the strains were able to produced tannins and cardiac glycoside but they did not synthesis saponins. L1, L2 and L4 strains were able to produced phenol. In dual culture, the growth of the pathogen decreased the growth rate of the endophytes. L2 strain grew normally by forming an arc around P. colocasiae growth while L3 and L5 strains induced the pathogen to grow on the opposite side of P. colocasiae. Concerning L1 and L4 strains, there were no effect. Based on the antifungal activities against P colocasiae, these strains L2 and L3 could be used for biological control of taro life blight.","PeriodicalId":186601,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diseases and Medicinal Plants","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126980124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Ethiopia, this genus is represented by well known endemic and critically endangered species Echinops kebericho Mesfin also known as “ Kebercho,” in Amharic language which has a long history of ethnomedicinal uses. Due to the popularity of species as a source of ethnomedicine, this species is severely over-harvested throughout their distributional ranges. This review documents fragmented information on traditional uses and pharmacological evidence of Echinops kebericho in Ethiopia. This review article was carried out by searching studies in PubMed, Google scholar and Google search up to August 2019. The search terms were “Echinops kebericho Mesfin”, “therapeutic” & “pharmacological”. Ethnomedicinal uses of Echinops kebericho Mesfin has been recorded from different regions of Ethiopia for 32 human and 2 livestock ailments. E. kebericho is used to treat evil eye, headache, cough, stomachache, febrile illness and malaria ailments. The extracts of E. kebericho, particularly those from root, exhibited a wide range of pharmacological effects including antihelminthic, antibacterial, antifungal, antidiarrheal, anti spasmolytic and antimalarial activities. These pharmacological studies have established a scientific basis for therapeutic uses of Echinops kebericho Mesfin. Although Ethiopian Echinops kebericho is widely used by traditional practitioners but, it is threatened due to over exploitation of root part. Therefore, E. kebericho need urgent conservation attention, micro propagation, effective documentation and further research.","PeriodicalId":186601,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diseases and Medicinal Plants","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127195366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study is aimed to evaluate the potential mechanism of antidiabetic action of aqueous extract of Alkanna strigosa aerial part and its hypolipidemic effects in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rats. This study was conducted on fifty experimental animals. Adult albino rats (Sprague- Dawely strain) weighing about 220 g each were used throughout the study. Fifty rats were randomly assigned to five experimental groups of 10 rats each: Group 1 - received normal saline (0.5 ml/kg), and serves as control. Group II - gavaged daily for thirty days with 1ml of the extract at doses of 400 mg/kg body wt and served as control. Group III - Untreated diabetic rats that received two doses of alloxan 150 mg/kg. Group IV – Treated diabetic rats for thirty consecutive days with 1 ml of the extract at a dose of 400 mg/kg body wt. Group V: Treated diabetic rats for thirty consecutive days with 14.2 mg/kg of metformin. Several hematological and biochemical parameters were assessed. It was found that the administration of aqueous extract of Alkanna strigosa produced significant reduction in blood glucose level in diabetic rats after thirty days of treatment. However, there was a significant (p < 0.05). Increase of insulin secretion. Also, the RBC and WBC count, PCV and neutrophil percentage decreased significantly (p < 0.05). This study indicated that the aqueous extract of Alkanna strigosa increased the RBC and WBC counts, PCV, ESR, and neutrophil percentage in diabetic rats. However, the WBC count of the extract - treated diabetic group was still lower than those of control values. Administration of the extract resulted in a significant reduction in the mean values of serum cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-C, ESR, urea, uric acid, creatinine accompanied by an increase in the mean values of total protein, albumin, insulin, HDL-C, neutrophile count and PCV in diabetic rats.
