One of the ways to prevent neurodegeneration is to supply the body with antioxidant molecules derived from food. The aim of this study is to evaluate the nutritional value and neuroprotective activities of eggplants on cognitive impaired rat model. Powder was made with the white and purple Solanum melongena and the nutritional value of each was determined. Total phenolic and flavonoid content, antioxidant activity by DPPH scavenging and reducing iron tests, were determined from aqueous, ethanolic and hydroethanolic fruit extracts. The powder and the most active extract of Solanum melongena were used to determine neuroprotective activity in rats. Male wistar rats were divided into 7 groups of 6 each. Morris water maze and radial maze tests were performed at the end of the experiment to assess behaviour in rats. After 28 days, the rats were sacrificed and biochemical investigations such as protein content, reduced glutathione, catalase activity, malondiadehyde and acetylcholinesterase activity were evaluated in brain homogenates. The purple Solamun melongena showed the highest ash (6.06%), calcium (10.50 mg/100 g of desiccated foods), phosphorus (25.75 mg/100 g of desiccated foods), potassium (218.00 mg/100 g of desiccated foods) and zinc (0.18 mg/100 g of desiccated foods) content. On the other hand, white Solanum melongena showed the highest fiber (3.61%) and iron (0.36 mg/100 g of desiccated foods) content. The greatest phenolic content (69.90 mg GAE /g) and flavonoid content (31.54 mg CATE / g) was observed with the purple Solanum melongena. It also presented the best scavenging DPPH activity (EC 50 = 41.91 μg/ml). The group Sm400 showed the best memory learning activity with radial maze tests (0.66 n/min), a significant decrease of malondialdehyde (15.26 µmole/g), acetylcholinesterase activity (0.13 nmol/min/mg protein) and an increase of protein content (43.71µmole/g) (P<0.05). The group Sm10% showed the best memory capacity radial maze tests (0.73 n/min), the lowest malondialdehyde level and acetylcholinesterase activity (12.45 µmole/g and 0.11nmol/min/mg protein respectively) (P<0.05). Purple Solanum melongena could be used to protect neuron functions.","PeriodicalId":186601,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diseases and Medicinal Plants","volume":"12 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140715687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Like other cereal crops, these potential medicinal and aromatic plants are constantly in grave danger from disease attack. The aim of this study was to assess the most prevalent diseases on prioritized medicinal and aromatic plants. Survey was conducted at Wondo Genet Agricultural research stations and herb growing companies in Ethiopia. Survey fields were observed from vegetative to maturity stage of the plant to assess the pest status. A total of 11 medicinal and aromatic plants were assessed in four different locations and these herbs were attacked by various diseases. Rust disease was the most serious problem on Aloe vera and Lemon grass, accounting for 30-40 percent of disease severity at Wondo Genet. In Butajira, powdery mildew was the most common disease found on sage, with a 20 percent severity. Downy mildew was recorded as a major disease on basil plants in Hawassa and Debre Zeit, with a 30-35 percent severity. Therefore, identification of the pathogen's causing agents and integrated disease management for the major recorded diseases of medicinal and aromatic plants needs further research.","PeriodicalId":186601,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diseases and Medicinal Plants","volume":"53 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140427296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various biotic and abiotic stresses affected the production and productivity of wheat. From biotic stresses, yellow rust and stem rust disease of wheat that caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici and Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici are among the devastating and wheat production bottlenecks. Therefore, a field experiment was done at two highland of Guji zone (Bore and Ana Sora) under rain-fed condition during the 2019/20 main cropping season to evaluate effects of different fungicides on wheat rust diseases, yield and yield components of bread wheat. The treatments consisted of five fungicides including standard check and nil application using bread wheat variety Kubsa. A randomized complete block design with three replications was used to conduct up the experiment. The partial budget analysis was carried out to assess financial profitability of fungicide application for the management of rusts. Analysis of the results revealed that the application of fungicides significantly affected rust diseases, growth parameters and yield attributes except date to heading and date maturity. Fungicide spray treatments significantly reduced both rusts (yellow and stem) rust diseases severity to the lowest level and increment of yield over the nil application. The minimum yellow rust and stem rust diseases severity recorded from the test fungicide Take-Off 293% SC while maximum yellow rust and stem rust diseases severity were recorded at unsprayed plot. There was significant difference (p < 5%) in grain yield, biomass yield, thousand seed weight, plant height, spike length and rust (yellow and stem) between fungicide treatments and control/nil application. The highest grain yield (2738 kg/ha) was obtained from Take-Off 293% SC sprayed plots while the lowest (987 kg/ha) was from nil application. Take-Off 293% SC revealed better grain yield advantage than the standard Check fungicide and control by about 5.6 and 63.95, respectively. Moreover, all fungicide applications showed a considerable production advantage over untreated plots. Take-Off 293% SC controlled effectively both rusts (yellow and stem) diseases of wheat by increasing yield of wheat. Therefore, based on partial budget analysis, yield and rust disease control, using of Take-Off 293% SC fungicide which leads to the optimum yield of bread wheat by decreasing rusts and can be recommended for the study area and other areas with similar agro-ecologies.","PeriodicalId":186601,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Diseases and Medicinal Plants","volume":"204 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131557054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
