The Pearson’s chi-squared test expressed that [1] shido-1 in the first event (EV1) of the contests that end before the regular time (BRT) and of those without considering when they end (OC) is associated to defeat for both sexes and, that [2] wazari-1 in the EV1 of the BRT and in the EV2 and EV3 of the BRT, of the contests with the duration extended beyond the regular time (EXT) and of OC is associated to victory for both sexes except in the EV2 of the EXT (only for male athletes in this case). Thus, it is suggested that the victory and defeat in the different types of the judo elite contests are associated with the occurrence of the penalties and scores of the first three events of them.","PeriodicalId":186541,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Artes Marciales Asiáticas","volume":"12 10","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141797423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper draws on ethnographic research conducted on The Blade Academy, an expanding historical European martial arts (HEMA) school in the United Kingdom. Among pedagogic strategies used by the lead instructors and their core followers are narratives about historic figures whose heroic beliefs and deeds should be respected and even emulated by practitioners. This article explores the case study of 12-13th century Norman-English knight William Marshal, who is used as a principal model for leadership, martial valour, economic success and moral activity by the lead instructor. We examine idealised models of chivalry that such modern martial artists aspire to follow despite them living within very different societies and value systems. We conclude by considering the merits of revisiting historical figures who might act as role models for modern teachers and their students.","PeriodicalId":186541,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Artes Marciales Asiáticas","volume":" 23","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141833058","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first contact between the group that proposed the creation of the CSSIG was made after a session of the Annual Congress of the ECSS held in 2022, but the idea and format of the proposal was initiated in January 2023. After its approval the CSSIG set the topics for the first meeting. During the 2023 edition the ECSS event had eight special interest groups, including the CSSIG. The first meeting of the CSSIG included the presentation of its goals, and two short presentations: one related to combat sports athletes’ health, and the other on testing and training monitoring of judo athletes. The aim of the CSSIG is to establish a sustainable network fostering evidence-based research and practice of combat sports, in order to: (a) promote health and safety of combat sports participants, (b) enhance their performance, and (c) improve training and competition practices. Thus, this report is also a call for action for the next events.","PeriodicalId":186541,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Artes Marciales Asiáticas","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134378726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, chan chuang has garnered increased attention and recognition. However, existing research primarily focuses on the efficacy of chan chuang, rather than exploring the practice itself. Consequently, there is a dearth of scientific and experiential guidance available to current practitioners of chan chuang. To address this gap, the present study employs an in-depth interview method within a qualitative research framework, conducting follow-up interviews with eight martial artists who regularly engage in chan chuang practice. By gaining insights into the physical and mental states of these practitioners, this paper aims to elucidate their embodied experiences of chan chuang from the perspective of “body perception”. The findings reveal that the practitioners’ perception of their bodies during chan chuang practice can be characterized by three key aspects: stillness, naturalness, and qi. The sense of stillness signifies a state of tranquility in both body and mind. The sense of naturalness represents a harmonious equilibrium of body and mind, at times even resulting in a loss of self-awareness. Finally, the sense of qi conveys a serene mental state accompanied by the smooth flow of life energy and blood. These three dimensions guide chan chuang practitioners toward attaining physical and mental well-being.","PeriodicalId":186541,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Artes Marciales Asiáticas","volume":"432 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123575688","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is the ability of a fighter to withstand punches to the jaw area without falling unconscious and thus receiving a knockout. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the possibility of developing a glass jaw over the course of a fighter's career, and whether certain fighters are more predisposed to experiencing knockouts. Utilizing data from the largest Mixed Martial Arts organization, the Ultimate Fighting Championship, spanning from 2010 to 2021, statistical models reveal that certain fighters may be more susceptible to knockouts compared to others. Conversely, it could not be shown that the probability of a future knockout loss, that is developing a glass jaw, increased with the number of knockouts received. However, there remains space for a more detailed investigation of this phenomenon. The historically debated resistance training of punches to the head area cannot be recommended. Conversely, it is advisable to observe the fighters' reactions to punches to the head in order to pick out those with a greater predisposition for a knockout. They should then be especially cautious when practicing combat sports.","PeriodicalId":186541,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Artes Marciales Asiáticas","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126367739","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Este artigo tem por objetivo analisar os antecedentes e o caminho percorrido por Rei Zulu para se tornar um dos lutadores mais proeminentes do vale tudo no Brasil. A partir da triangulação de fontes, englobando notícias de jornais brasileiros, entrevistas, biografias e livros sobre a temática, verificou-se a existência de um contexto histórico prévio dessa luta em Maranhão, seu estado natal, e o modus operandi adotado por ele. Foi possível concluir que o vale tudo era praticado no Maranhão desde a década de 1950, e o contexto histórico desempenhou um papel importante na ascensão de Rei Zulu como um ícone local. Responsável por encontrar adversários por meio de desafios em rádios, jornais e programas de televisão, Rei Zulu assumia a organização dos eventos, a divulgação e venda de ingressos. Além de realizar a luta principal e entreter o público com caretas, danças e acrobacias durante o combate.","PeriodicalId":186541,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Artes Marciales Asiáticas","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130694474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The two-day conference included three keynote speakers on the first day and 20 oral presentations divided into two sections. The second day included four practical sessions, which closed the program. The conference proceedings book was published, which includes 24 papers. The conference was again impeccably organised and had an outstanding return after the Covid-19 interruption, with many exciting topics presented by researchers and judo practitioners. Unsurprisingly, the philosophy of Idokan karate is therefore similar to other schools while remaining distinct in the myriad of martial art practices. Idokan karate possesses a practical philosophy (i.e., applicable to everyday life) influenced by Eastern and Western belief systems that are internalized and utilized by its practitioners as forms of today’s civilian warrior path. This single case study examines the prominent Idokan ethics, values, and rules as well as details its specific and symbolic content. It makes use of the hermeneutic phenomenology research method to present a content analysis of literature on Idokan within the wider discourse of martial arts studies. A broad discourse analysis of these topics in both scientific studies and popular publications was conducted. In doing so, this study’s practical implications are that it not only provides a glimpse into the uniqueness of Idokan karate philosophy but also into that of the vastness of the great martial arts menagerie. Idokan karate philosophy is derived distinctively from its founders’ understandings of Chinese and Japanese martial arts, Taoism, and Christianity and dictates practitioners a unique morality. Such teleology comes from special values, rules, and aims embedded in Idokan teachings. In normative ethics, the Decalogue and nobility of spirit (the Homo Creator Nobilis) are most important. Tao in Idokan is understood as God’s Word, the principle of love, and the way of (Christian) heaven.","PeriodicalId":186541,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Artes Marciales Asiáticas","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123641298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The book is divided in three parts, preceded by an extended an unusual preface about an ethnographic account of the practice of martial arts before, during, and after the COVID lockdown. Parts one and two present different lines of the recent development of traditional martial arts. Part three is clearly different from the other two, offering a well based ethnographic text on the life courses of some martial artists taken as case studies. Along the text, the author poses a well- balanced set of research techniques and sources to ground his analysis. Jennings affords innovative angles to see the current transformation of these cultural practices. Besides, the book points to a myriad of possible directions that the author will surely explore and further develop in future volumes.","PeriodicalId":186541,"journal":{"name":"Revista de Artes Marciales Asiáticas","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116466406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
