Utilizing the TRM simulator one can define a network of processes which comprise a software system and model its execution in a man-machine environment to derive data throughput times, man/machine utilization statistics, and queueing statistics. Trace, plot, and histogram features enhance the utility of the outputs for the modeler. Results of using this model to simulate the TES/EMPS system are presented and extensions for continued research are noted.","PeriodicalId":186490,"journal":{"name":"Annual Simulation Symposium","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130783354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The emulation is used for the development of the operating system for the new computer system to permit both hardware and software development to proceed in parallel. The emulation's goal is to permit the operating system to be developed before the hardware is available. This is aimed at reducing the time and effort required in the hardware/software integration interval to permit a more rapid introduction of a computer system - both hardware and operating system. Emulation is one of several software/hardware models being used in the development of the computer system. There are also functional, gate-level, manufacturing-model simulations used in the development of the BELLMAC-32A microprocessor. Several steps are used in verifying the emulation as well as cross-verification of the BELLMAC-32A microprocessor portion of the different models. Both the BELLMAC-32A microprocessor and the computer system were emulated. The emulation model includes an emulation of the memory mapping, interrupt structure, memory management and peripherals of the real processor. It is an instruction-level compatible emulation that provides high throughput for software debugging. Since the bit layouts of the software that runs on the emulation and the real machine are identical, code that runs on the emulation will run on the real machine except for time dependent code. Since the emulator is a form of software, it can be instrumented for additional debugging capabilities. The emulator went through a rigorous development methodology of requirements, design, implementation and testing phases. Each phase had reviews and/or walk-throughs. Further, the testing phase was done by personnel other than the emulator developers to ensure that the product met external specifications as seen by the customers of the emulation. The emulator development environment includes both microcode development tools and lab environment debugging tools. Both sets of tools run on the UNIX [1] operating system. The microcode development tools include an assembler, pre- and post-processors for generation of microcode, and a microcode simulator for testing the microcode. Both a pre- and post-processor were developed to aid in generating microcode for the emulator developers. Additional pre-processors were taken from other standard UNIX software to further aid the developers with conditional assemblies and symbolic references. The lab environment for the emulation makes use of a UNIX software based front-end lab support processor that interfaces to the emulation processor. A powerful debugging tool is available to the emulator developers on the front-end processor to permit single stepping at both the micro and macro level, display and modification of internal registers, give microinstruction traces, provide breakpointing capabilities, provide microcode and object code ","PeriodicalId":186490,"journal":{"name":"Annual Simulation Symposium","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124495296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its operation and maintenance tax the abilities of its highly trained crews. It therefore remains a worthy goal to find ways for relieving the crew's load while preserving or improving its effectiveness. One area of interest, which promises to help attain this goal is that of decision support systems. These systems are generally designed to aid rather than replace human activity. The design of these systems has not matured to the level of an established, formal engineering science. Hence this design area provides ample opportunity for effective use of simulation and stimulation of hardware, software, information and operability concepts, models, prototypes and systems. This paper limits its scope to one application in the area of decision support system design. It considers the analysis and simulation of a combat system decision aid for on-board recovery from subsystem failures by helping to reorganize the combat system's remaining resources through the command structure's decision process.","PeriodicalId":186490,"journal":{"name":"Annual Simulation Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130889594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes the approach, its use, and value in product development. To provide a common basis for understanding the modeling activities to be discussed, a brief overview of the xerographic process as used in our current duplicator copier products is described. Each of the functions is discussed in terms of how they contribute to the overall systems model and how they are linked together in this model. A brief description of the data acquisition system used for model validation is included. A discussion of the FORTRAN-based simulation language, analysis tools, and its flexibility is presented. The application of this modeling approach at Xerox is illustrated. The applications are the optimization of performance parameters, subsystem requirements, tolerances, aging, and setpoints, as well as the examination of the performance of a population. These population studies encompass customer utilization and service interactions. The advantages of this process will be discussed, including the design efficiencies enabled, service policy optimization, and field performance projection of the product population.","PeriodicalId":186490,"journal":{"name":"Annual Simulation Symposium","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124526798","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is an engineering design tool used to develop and evaluate alternative C3I options, to aid in hardware selection and software architecture design, and to demonstrate the ability of a candidate system design to meet unique mission requirements. The time critical and operator intensive C3I nodes are “played” in the simulator. That is to say, the operators must interact with the software to access the particular set of received messages, react with proper decisions, and generate and send the resulting outgoing messages. The other components of the CSWS (i.e., the launcher and missiles) and the “outside world” are simulated dynamically by event driven models. The initial version of the Simulator was postulated to reflect current U.S. Army organizational doctrine and the results of previous studies by other contractors. It revealed an unnecessary, time consuming message path, identified three major message flow loops to be processed automatically (i.e., without manual interaction), and validated the desirability of combining the command and control functions performed at two adjacent C3I nodes. The simulator is currently operational at Martin Marietta Aerospace in Orlando, Florida, and at TRW Defense Systems Group in Redondo Beach, California.","PeriodicalId":186490,"journal":{"name":"Annual Simulation Symposium","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131610322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper illustrates the application of predictor-corrector integration algorithms developed for the digital parallel processing environment. The algorithms are implemented and evaluated through the use of a software simulator which provides an approximate representation of the parallel processing hardware. Test cases which focus on the use of the algorithms are presented and a specific application using a linear model of a turbofan engine is considered. Results are presented showing the effects of integration step size and the number of processors on simulation accuracy. Real-time performance, inter-processor communication, and algorithm startup are also discussed.","PeriodicalId":186490,"journal":{"name":"Annual Simulation Symposium","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1982-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127963426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results for CPU utilisation and CPU queue length from the models compare very favourably, suggesting that the technique could be used to confirm the accuracy of a simulation model. It is found that the degree of dissimilarity of the models can be surprisingly large before the method of comparison can be considered as having broken down.","PeriodicalId":186490,"journal":{"name":"Annual Simulation Symposium","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1981-03-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127499594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
