Abstract

This paper discusses the problems experienced in predicting execution times while varying the workload for a large batched transaction-oriented management information system. Experiments were also performed to determine the runtime sensitivity of proposed modifications to the software architecture. The need for the predictions was based on the substantial observed differences in runtime between the first two users of the system. These differences were observed despite superficially similar workloads and identical hardware and operating systems.
