Of the people who don't improvise, there also appear to be two sub-types: those who pursue any means necessary to avoid it and those who are planning to get around to it. Performers can choose the type of improviser or non-improviser they want to be, but how do their attitudes and choices effect their teaching and, consequently, their students' experiences? For applied teachers, especially at universities with an emphasis on teacher education, can improvisation be a part of their teaching, regardless of the type of (non-)improviser they choose to be, for the benefit of their students? Inspired by the 2014 College Music Society Task Force on the Undergraduate Music Major, this article is directed at teachers, especially those who do not (yet) improvise. It provides an example of how improvisation can be integrated into applied study in a broad sense by providing a sequential, progressive curriculum that encourages students and teachers to walk together on a path to wider personal expression and freedom to just play.","PeriodicalId":186040,"journal":{"name":"Jazz Education in Research and Practice","volume":"2015 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132824104","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Commercially available products were purchased at retail by the author and analyzed for author affiliations, visual appeal and packaging, target grade levels/audience, ease of implementation, digital resources, types of activities, quality and usefulness of recordings if included, and need for outside supplementation. Primary results are the emphasis on vocabulary-based activities, included recorded examples were not universally accurate or of high quality, and improvisation activities were often absent from the materials. The author provides recommendations on how to implement the materials effectively and authentically. The paper includes a list of online resources as well as an informal survey of early jazz experiences of music professionals.","PeriodicalId":186040,"journal":{"name":"Jazz Education in Research and Practice","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134210346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

HA is the technique of arriving at the succeeding chord ahead of time, and although frequently used by jazz soloists, it has received scarce attention in the literature as a standalone concept. The research investigates how Parker uses HA, including the length of anticipation, the location in the musical form, and the types of melodic and rhythmic structures engaged. I also consider whether HA is an essential component of transcription analysis and how musicians might approach learning to anticipate harmony when improvising. The research methods include transcription analysis of improvised solos and a practice-led approach to learning to improvise with HA. The transcription analyses reveal Parker's preferred methods for anticipating harmony: at a modulation point, during a ii-V-I chord progression, before the I chord in a blues form, and with varying lengths of 25-100% of the underlying harmonic rhythm. I argue that existing methods of transcription analysis can be improved by the inclusion of a sophisticated understanding of HA and develop a series of pedagogical exercises for my own practice and for use by a wider audience.","PeriodicalId":186040,"journal":{"name":"Jazz Education in Research and Practice","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127011997","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Art forms that happen in real time, creative extensions of each other, they reflect tradition and serve as vanguards of social change. Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington, the great American composer and jazz icon, never lost sight of the relationship between his music and dance. This allegiance to dance aligns Ellington with the Afrocentric aesthetic, where dance and music are inseparable. Primary source research—autobiographies, interviews and oral histories, the words of Ellington, his musicians and the dancers who worked with him—gives us a new appreciation of his music and, moreover, his creative process. Their voices give proof that JAZZ IS A VERB, it is the act of creation itself.","PeriodicalId":186040,"journal":{"name":"Jazz Education in Research and Practice","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125304163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this regard, Chet has become a model for aspiring jazz singers. Although Chet had considerable technical skill as an instrumentalist, he was largely an autodidact, relying on his ear rather than reading music to express the jazz language and navigate through complex chord progressions. Through rigorous study and emulation of the solos of Miles Davis, Harry James and Dizzy Gillespie, he developed a foundation and understanding of how to improvise. Though imitating recordings is similar in approach to the way that vocalists develop their fluency in jazz improvisation, Chet first developed a working knowledge of the technique of the trumpet and how jazz phrases are constructed to express his musical ideas. Without a solid foundation and an instrumental reference, a predominantly “by-ear” approach can result in cliché-driven and repetitive solos. It is therefore the purpose of this article to establish a methodology that assists vocalists in assimilating jazz vocabulary from recordings, using the piano as an aural and intellectual guide.","PeriodicalId":186040,"journal":{"name":"Jazz Education in Research and Practice","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128303439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Similarities between Debussy's modal techniques and hallmark traits of post-bop jazz harmony are discovered within the contributions that Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, and McCoy Tyner made to Miles Davis's and John Coltrane's small groups. The analysis presented in this article is intended to serve as a model on how jazz research can develop into pedagogical tools for jazz educators and performers aspiring to reach new levels of sophistication in their playing.","PeriodicalId":186040,"journal":{"name":"Jazz Education in Research and Practice","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121489551","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method is also useful to more experienced jazz musicians, lending them strategies for expediting the transcription process while still making meaning of broader concerns within improvised solos by the masters. Placed-based pedagogy sees learning as occurring not just within classroom walls, but in the surrounding cultural and natural environment. My idea is that by making a space for place, we create opportunities for students to ground their creative development, enculturing their technical skills so that they have a spot from which to say something from a place deeply felt and personally meaningful. Such a pedagogy is based on being in the places where certain music was/is created, connecting to the surrounding local community, and reflecting on one's own sense of place. My hope is that through experiences with place students can use their knowledge of the mechanics and grammar of jazz, to improvise not only with competence and musicality, but with wisdom as well. As guides for my musings I draw inspiration from the areas of cultural geography, critical pedagogies of place, and especially Native American indigenous epistemologies.","PeriodicalId":186040,"journal":{"name":"Jazz Education in Research and Practice","volume":"57 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123631453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
