Predicting cavitation generation is crucial to evaluate the lifetime of fluid machines. Cavitation has been generated from a solid-fluid interface with tensile stress (pressure) wave propagation across the interface. It was revealed that cavitation generation was suppressed when the surface wettability of the solid in a solid-fluid interface was improved (hydrophilized). It means that a condition exists in which cavitation is not generated despite the existence of bubble nuclei in water. This phenomenon cannot be explained by the conventional theory of fluid mechanics. In this study, an analogy between the theory of crack propagation in fracture mechanics and cavitation generation and propagation from a solid-fluid interface with fluid-structure interactions is developed and applied. An impact experiment was conducted with a free-falling projectile that hit a cylindrical solid buffer placed on top of a water surface within an elastic tube standing on the ground. The projectile impact created a stress wave propagating through the buffer and across the interface of the buffer and water. During the experiments, cavitation bubbles were generated from the interface of the buffer and water due to tensile wave propagation across the interface. Cavitation intensity was controlled by adding a surfactant to water. A bubble was set on the solid-fluid interface beforehand, then its growth with stress (or pressure) wave propagation was observed. The formularization of cavitation occurrence was tested by using initial crack length and stress in fracture mechanics as an analogy for the diameter of pre-set bubble and pressure wave amplitude.","PeriodicalId":185894,"journal":{"name":"Volume 4: Fluid-Structure Interaction","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134537343","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A closed water loop was used to provide unsteady flow data as well as wall pressure and vibration measurements. In parallel, the unsteady water flow through the elbow was computed using an incompressible Large-Eddy Simulation (LES). Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) and Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) were used in order to build a relationship between the flow properties and the resulting excitation. This relationship was then used to estimate the evolution of the spatially distributed loadings, which were finally applied to a finite element model of the piping structure. The results consisted of an estimation of the vibration levels. The estimated vibrations were then compared to measurements in order to validate the proposed modeling strategy.","PeriodicalId":185894,"journal":{"name":"Volume 4: Fluid-Structure Interaction","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124880838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This will be achieved using numerical 2D CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analysis. The 2D analysis is done using ANSYS Fluent software. Tube movement in the shell side is provided by UDF (user-defined function) DEFINE_SDOF_PROPERTIES. By determining the stiffness and weight of the tubes, two-way fluid and tube interaction can be achieved. Due to limitations of 2D CFD analysis, only the occurrence of the tube-tube or tube-shell collisions can be observed. Unfortunately, the first collision causes termination of the simulation due to negative volumes in dynamic mesh. Possible solutions to the issue are also discussed in presented paper.\u0000 The analyzed geometry of the shell side is taken from the Heat Exchanger Tube Vibration Data Bank [2]. This publication collects heat exchanger data for which vibration phenomena have been reported. The above-mentioned geometry is a domain with tube bundle at the shell side under the inlet. In the same domain, both the tie rod and the seal strips and the 45° turn of the partitions are considered.","PeriodicalId":185894,"journal":{"name":"Volume 4: Fluid-Structure Interaction","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131564349","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While standard HTA transient cavitation models used with analysis based on the Method of Characteristics show good correlation when compared to known test/field data, the great majority of test/field data are for simple systems experiencing a single transient. Transient cavitation in more complicated systems or from two or more independently initiated transients have not been validated against data.\u0000 Part 1 of this paper describes the various safety factors already provided by ASME B31.3 for pressure containment, provides criteria for accepting the results of HTA calculations that show the presence of transient cavitation, and makes recommendations where the user should include additional safety factors based on the transient cavitation results.\u0000 Situations are discussed where waterhammer abatement is recommended to reduce hydraulic transient pressures and forces, and for increasing confidence in HTA results in specific cases. The result is a proposed comprehensive and pragmatic guideline which practicing engineers can use to perform waterhammer analysis and apply pressure predictions to pipe stress analysis.","PeriodicalId":185894,"journal":{"name":"Volume 4: Fluid-Structure Interaction","volume":"13 7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124525057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to study the dynamic instability caused by multi-source forces including the flow force, the spring compressing force and the pressure wave force, a more realistic CFD model containing a PSV and different connected pipes as well as the pressure vessel is developed, in which advanced techniques in Fluent such as User Defined Function (UDF) and Dynamic Layering method are combined to allow the PSV to operate. Based on this model, the process of the valve’s opening and reclosing is monitored to examine the influence of design parameters on the dynamic instability of the PSV. Specifically, the propagation of pressure waves along the connecting pipes is successfully captured, which is of great help to explain the instability mechanism and optimize the design and setup of pressure relief systems.","PeriodicalId":185894,"journal":{"name":"Volume 4: Fluid-Structure Interaction","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123140810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The natural frequency of the tube is the basic parameter for vibration analysis. The supporting structures of the tube bundle in steam generator are the cinquefoil orifice-baffle and the anti-vibration bar which is different from the common baffle plate. The issue that researchers focus on is how these supporting structures affect the natural frequency. A simplified method of the special support in the tube bundle was studied based on the numerical simulation. According to the characteristics of supporting structures, the effect of stiffness of the supporting structures on the natural frequency was studied by the spring element constraints. The results show that when the stiffness of the support structure is larger than the magnitude of 105 N/m, the stiffness has no influence on the natural frequency. The frictional force of the circumferential constraint inside the plane is too weak to constrain the tube so we need to pay more attention on the vibration inside the plane. Through changing the contact length of the support component and tubes, the effect of the contact condition on the natural frequency is studied. The results show that the contact condition has a certain effect on the natural frequency. When the support is simplified as simple support, the influence on natural frequency is small and the deviation is less than 1.5%. And there is a certain safety margin under the simplified method. In the calculation process, the special support can be simplified as simple support and the calculation results are relatively accurate and conservative.","PeriodicalId":185894,"journal":{"name":"Volume 4: Fluid-Structure Interaction","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128924348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the nature of the mechanism causing streamwise fluidelastic instability, a purely experimental or an unsteady determination would require intensive experimental effort. As a compromise between experimental effort and prediction accuracy, the quasi-steady model is used in the current study. In the present work, previously measured quasi-steady and unsteady forces are used to estimate the time delay first between the displacement of an oscillating tube and the forces generated on itself then the time delay between the displacement of a central oscillating tube and the forces induced on the adjacent tubes. The estimated time delays are then used together with drag coefficients and derivatives to predict the in-plane fluidelastic instability in a rotated triangular tube array of P/D = 1.5 subjected to two-phase flow. The results closely replicate dynamic test results and confirm the predominance of the stiffness controlled mechanism and the potential of the quasi-steady model in accurately predicting streamwise fluidelastic instability in arrays subjected to two-phase flows.","PeriodicalId":185894,"journal":{"name":"Volume 4: Fluid-Structure Interaction","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127559101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Within limits, the liquid columns can be modeled as masses and the gas pockets as springs. Such a simple model already gives useful estimates of maximum pressures and temperatures in the gas pockets. Herein we consider a gas pocket located at a closed pipe end which is being compressed by a liquid column. In particular the situation is considered where the mass-stiffness ratios of the liquid-gas system and the vibrating dead end are of the same order of magnitude, so that fluid-structure interaction must be taken into account. This leads to interesting nonlinear behavior of the twofold spring-mass model representing the system. Any acoustic effects (wave propagation) are ignored. The study aims at finding dimensionless dynamic load factors and vibration frequencies in pipe systems filled with liquid and gas.","PeriodicalId":185894,"journal":{"name":"Volume 4: Fluid-Structure Interaction","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121129628","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The correlation between the turbulent flow through the elbow and the dynamic forcing it yields on the piping walls was assessed experimentally. A closed water loop containing a transparent elbow was designed in order to develop fully turbulent duct flow condition. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was applied in the transparent zone in order to provide unsteady data on the flow dynamics through the elbow; simultaneously, wall pressure fluctuations were measured on and around the elbow. Several flow configurations were tested in order to obtain a large coupled database linking the flow features to the resulting dynamic excitation on the walls. Finally, Partial Least Square Regression (PLSR) was applied in order to harvest the correlated information contained in multiple pressure signals at multiple time-delays and build a relationship capable of estimating the temporal evolution of the velocity field using a set of measured wall pressure signals.","PeriodicalId":185894,"journal":{"name":"Volume 4: Fluid-Structure Interaction","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130990652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

U-shaped tube bundles are subjected to cross flow in inlet and bend sections. According to the design standards of steam generators, short-term flow induced vibration (FIV) damage could be avoided, but wear and corrosion of tubes still exists. Both fluid and structure parameters are needed in FIV analysis. As direct modeling of SG flow field is almost infeasible, the porous medium model has been widely used instead. Using porous medium model can only obtain the gap velocity approximately by mathematical methods with many other unclear parameters. A combination method of direct modeling and porous medium model was established in this research. The direct modeling section could give the details of fluid forces and the accurate gap velocity. Using the fluid forces, explicit dynamic analyses of tube with supports were carried out to get FIV response and contact forces. In this paper, a typical SG model was studied in designed experimental conditions, and the results were compared with published literatures. The results demonstrate that the numerical simulation along with the combination model and explicit dynamic analysis can provide new methods into the flow-induced vibration and fretting wear of multi-span U-tubes which can be applied into future design for steam generators and other heat exchangers with large size.","PeriodicalId":185894,"journal":{"name":"Volume 4: Fluid-Structure Interaction","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-07-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131969587","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
