Assessment of leakage tightness is a fundamental aspect in the design of swellable packers, since they should guarantee a reliable sealing under extreme pressures of the downhole fluids. Numerical capability of the leakage pressure prediction would facilitate improvement in the packer design methodology. Previous work was focused on investigation of the non-parametric optimisation capability seeking for an optimal external shape with a goal to maximise the grip of a packer with a borehole. The verification of an optimised design was done with a dynamic FE-simulation of packer’s failure by extrusion under an excessive pressure. The downside of that verification analysis was that Abaqus/Explicit solver couldn’t implement a realistic adaptive pressure application due to changing packer disposition and contact conditions. This simulation challenge is addressed in this paper by application of the Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) approach in Abaqus/Explicit, which provides the ability to simulate a class of problems where the fluid-structure interaction is important.

Flow induced vibration is one of the main causes of heat exchanger failures. However, there is no corresponding standard and basic parameters in the design code of different countries for concentric arrays of tube bundles. The fluid elastic instability of this type of heat exchangers cannot be calculated, and the design criteria is lacked. In this paper, a circulating water tunnel experimental facility were set up to test the vibration characteristic of concentric arrays subjected to cross flow. A non-contact measurement method based on high-speed photography imaging technology were adopted, which improved the accuracy of the test. Three kinds of tube bundles (0-degree angle, 15-degree angle and 30-degree angle arrangement, radial/circumferential pitch being 33.6/36.4 mm) were studied. The vibration frequency, amplitude and critical velocity of the tube bundle were investigated by changing the flow velocity. Computational fluid dynamics and fluid-structure interaction method were applied to simulate the fluid elastic instability of tube bundles, that were further verified by the experiments. Meanwhile, the numerical simulation supplements the contents of the experimental studies, which is utilizable to investigate and research the fluid elastic instability. The results of this work could provide references for the design of concentric array heat exchangers.

These pressure pulsations excite the acoustic modes inside the reactor vessel (RV), and cause significant acoustic loads on the reactor internals (RIs). For verifying the structural integrity of the RIs, it is important to predict the acoustic loads, which is used for vibration analysis of the RIs. Traditionally, an analytical method, assuming that structures are rigid, has been used in order to predict the acoustic pressure distributions inside the RV [1]. However, water in actual PWR plant is heavy enough to influence structural response, so that it is required to use methods for a coupled structural acoustic system.\u0000 In this article, the coupled structural-acoustic analysis using the commercial software ANSYS is proposed in order to predict the acoustic loads, and the applicability of this method is discussed. The structural-acoustic interactions inside the RV are investigated by element tests and the scale model test. The acoustic pressures measured by these tests are compared with the calculated results.

The elbow of 90 degrees was installed in the inlet of the horizontal main pipe. The inlet flow velocities in the main and branch pipes were set to about 1.0 m/s and 0.7 m/s, respectively, to produce a wall jet pattern where the jet from the branch pipe was bent by the main pipe flow and made to flow along the pipe wall. A total of 148 thermocouples were installed near the pipe inner surface to measure the temperature distribution in the mixing tee. The upstream elbow decreased the temperature fluctuation intensity and the temperature fluctuation range at the inner surface. On the other hand, the distribution profiles and the dominant frequencies of temperature fluctuations were similar. The temperature fluctuation was also caused by the movement of a hot spot in the circumferential direction for both cases with and without the upstream elbow. The reduction of the movement of the hot spot in the circumferential direction decreased the temperature fluctuation for the case with the upstream elbow.

Since several safety related systems were added to the plants through the process of the new regulatory requirements, the numbers of components to be inspected, which is already a large amount, will increase even more after the restart in Japan. Effective measure will be required to command maintenance activities by reasonably assigning limited resource. The authors had planned a research project aiming optimization of maintenance considering influence of fluid leakage behavior, for example, diffusion area, flow rate, flow impingement pressure and all, with pipe failure, mainly targeting less-safety related piping and components. And the experimental equipment which has the ability to evaluate the fluid leakage behavior from crack, pinhole and break were constructed. In this paper, fundamental data about fluid diffusion properties of low energy water is mentioned.

This phenomenon, called impact erosion, is of concern in many applications due to its severe technical and economic consequences. The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) techniques for impact erosion prediction is a challenging approach to avoid the cost and complexity of laboratory testing. A well-established methodology exists for CFD-based erosion estimation, consisting in the simulation of the slurry flow by an Eulerian–Lagrangian two-phase model followed by the application of an empirical erosion correlation to estimate the loss of material produced by each particle-wall impact. One of the main assumptions of this approach is that the solids are treated as massive point particles, even if, from a theoretical point of view, this approximation may be too simplistic, as it requires the particle size to be infinitesimal. The objective of the present study was, primarily, to assess how the point–particle treatment of the dispersed phase may affect the accuracy of CFD-based erosion prediction models. Based on these findings, numerical strategies were proposed in order to correct for the induced error without the need of resorting to a fully-resolved description of the slurry flow, which would not be affordable in practical applications due to its excessive computational burden. As a first step, reference was made to the benchmark case of slurry abrasive jet impingement test. The obtained results will open the way for addressing more complex flows in future research.

In this study, we present a study on the flow induced vibration (FIV) and fretting wear of fuel rod with failed clamping at grids. First, according to the flow distribution around a type of pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuel rod, the power spectral density (PSD) is obtained to characterize the turbulence excitation. Next, by combining the correlation PSD test parameters, the mean square value of the vibration displacement of each rod mode is found, and then the wear depth of dimple position is calculated based on the ARCHARD wear formula. The clamping of fuel rod at various grids may fail due to inaccurate manufacturing, fuel transportation and in-core irradiation. The absence of clamping force would significantly influence the rod mode and thereby changes its FIV responses. Simulation results show that the failure of the leaf spring has negligible effect on the rod natural frequency whereas the dimple failure near the location with larger FIV amplitude has a much significant effect. The lateral flow velocities at the inlet and outlet of the core are larger. For the fully clamped fuel rod, the response amplitude of turbulent excitation at the bottom and top of the fuel rod is larger. This is even more obvious with a failed dimple at these locations. Comparatively, the effect of dimple support failure in the middle is less influential. The influence of dimple support failure over the rod wear depth depicts basically the same trend as on the maximum FIV amplitude. In addition to the FIV amplitude, wear depth is also related to rod natural frequency. By examining the multiplication of amplitude and frequency at the top and bottom grid, we found that the dimple failure has greater impact at the top grid.

To address a possible severe case of the transient hydrodynamic loads, the break was assumed to occur at the circumferential weld line between the feed water nozzle and the main feed water pipe so that the compressed sub-cooled water would be discharged through the short broken pipe. Thus, a sub-cooled liquid flashing flow through the broken short feed pipe was simulated numerically. Typical results of the prediction were illustrated and discussed. In addition, the present simulation in terms of the transient mass flow rates during the blowdown following the MFLB was compared to other previous calculations. Based on the discussions, the present simulation is considered to be physically plausible and more realistic than other previous predictions.

This technique is a metal forming using an underwater shock wave. The underwater shock wave is generated by underwater explosion of the explosive. The metal plate is formed with involving the high strain rate on this technique. In generally, the pressure vessel is used in this method due to the effective utilization of the explosion energy. The underwater shock wave is propagated in water and reflected on inside wall of the pressure vessel. This reflected shock wave is affected on the deformation shape of a metal plate. Therefore, the inside shape of pressure vessel is often changed. In other words, the shape of pressure vessel is changed, the shock pressure distribution on the metal plate and it is possible that final deformation shape of the metal plate is changed. Some numerical simulations and experiments have been carried out to clear the influence of the inside shape of pressure vessel in the explosive forming. The structural response and dynamic deformations are studied by analyzing the oscillations frequencies and amplitudes, under a hydrodynamics loads. The obtained numerical results are confronted with experimental ones, for validation. The numerical model is performed in the same geometric, physical and material conditions as the experimental set-up carried out in a hydrodynamic tunnel.\u0000 A polyacetal (POM) flexible hydrofoil NACA0015 with an angle of attack of 8° is considered to be immersed in a fluid flow at a Reynold number of 3 × 105. The structure is initially at rest and then moved by the action of the fluid flow. The numerical model is based on a strong coupling procedure for solving the Fluid-Structure Interaction problem. The Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) formulation of the Navier-Stokes equations is used and an anisotropic diffusion equation is solved to compute the fluid mesh velocity and position at each time step. The finite volume method is used for the numerical resolution of the fluid dynamics equations. The structure deformations are described by the linear elasticity equation which is solved by the finite elements method. The Fluid-Structure coupled problem is solved by using the partitioned FSI implicit algorithm.\u0000 A good agreement between numerical and experimental results for the hydrodynamics coefficients and hydrofoil deformations, maximum deflection and frequencies is obtained. The added mass and damping are analyzed and then the FSI effect on the dynamic deformations of the structure is highlighted.
