They are reported worldwide after heavy rainfall in urban environment. Stormwater systems are overloaded with running water containing large entrapped air pockets for which manholes form an escape route. However, heavy lids cover the manholes and they are supposed not to move.\u0000 An attempt is made to understand the physics behind dancing manhole covers by means of simple spring-massdashpot modeling. The quasi-steady version of Theodorsen’s unsteady aerodynamic theory is used for inviscid fluid-dynamic modelling of the deforming flag in axial flow. Polhamus’s leading edge suction analogy is employed to model flow separation effects from the free end at moderate angles of attack via a nonlinear vortex-lift force. The flag is modelled structurally via a geometrically-exact Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Using the extended Hamilton’s principle, the nonlinear partial-integro-differential equation governing the dynamics of the inverted flag in terms of the angle of rotation of the flag is obtained. The equation of motion is discretised spatially via the Galerkin method and is integrated in time via Gear’s backward differentiation formula. The bifurcation diagrams are obtained using a time-integration method and pseudo-arclength continuation. It is shown that inverted flags undergo multiple bifurcations with respect to flow velocity, and they generally exhibit four dynamical states: (i) stretched-straight, (ii) buckled, (iii) deflected-flapping, and (iv) large-amplitude flapping. Also, flapping of inverted flags probably develops through fluid-elastic instabilities. Our findings suggest that the system dynamics is sensitive to the mass ratio. It is shown that the mass ratio parameter does not affect the stability of the stretched-straight state and the onset of divergence; however, it controls the possibility of a direct transition from static undeflected equilibrium to large-amplitude flapping motion and it affects the amplitude of large-amplitude flapping.

Both ASME and RG1.20 have made a clear requirement for the analysis and evaluation of the flow induced vibration of steam generator. The flow induced vibration of heat transfer tube in two-phase flow is the difficult and important content in the analysis. In this paper, the finite element model of heat transfer tube is established and the modal analysis is carried out. Then in order to evaluate the influence of two-phase flow in the secondary side and support boundary constraint, the analytical results are compared with the natural frequencies of the heat transfer tube measured in the two-phase flow test. On the basis of accurate simulation of the dynamic characteristics of heat transfer tube in two-phase flow, the paper calculate the turbulent excitation response and the fluidelastic instability ratio aiming at the main mechanism causing the flow induced vibration of heat transfer tube in two-phase flow. Firstly, the modified PSD of turbulent excitation is proposed on the foundation of root mean square displacement amplitude of heat transfer tube measured in two-phase flow test. The calculation result of the amplitude of heat transfer tube with different void fraction can envelope the test result by using the modified PSD as input, and the safety margin is reasonable. Then we also verify whether the analysis conclusion of fluidelastic instability is in agreement with the test. Finally, the analytical technique is applied to the analysis of flow induced vibration of steam generator to verify the design of structure. The paper studies on flow induced vibration analysis and evaluation a heat transfer tube of steam generator in two-phase flow. These systems have a large amount of tubes necessary to increase the thermal power exchanged and their dynamical analysis for safety assessment and in life operation is one of the major concern of the nuclear industry.\u0000 The presence of the fluid creates a strong coupling between tubes which must be taken into account for complete dynamical analysis. However, the description of fluid’s effects on oscillating structures demands great numerical efforts, especially when the tube number increases making any direct numerical simulations impossible to achieve.\u0000 In this framework, homogenization methods are a possible solution in order to deal with tube bundle Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) problems; in fact, it gives the possibility to analyze the dynamics of the global coupled system in large domain with reasonable degree of detail and faster simulations times.\u0000 At the CEA of Saclay a method based on the linearized Euler equations has been developed. A fluid-structure interaction approach is chosen, as the physics of the flow and the structure are strongly coupled. The flow is unsteady, turbulent and incompressible. The pressure/velocity problem is solved using SIMPLEC scheme. First, the pitching movement is considered as a given continuous function of the hydrofoil heaving position. Second, the pitching motion is performed alternately at the end of each heave cycle. For each case, two maximum angles of attack and one heaving amplitudes are studied. Preliminary results showed that a high maximum angle of attack generates more lift hydrodynamics force, but also requires more energy to perform the rotation of pitch.

There is little guidance available to the piping and vessel designer regarding the magnitude of such drag loads, beyond evaluating drag loads on a case-by-case basis [e.g., using computational fluid dynamics (CFD)]. This paper presents a newly developed set of drag loads vs standoff distance for a range of flame speeds and vapor cloud sizes. Nine flame speeds were evaluated, up to and including supersonic flame speeds. Cloud sizes are characterized using energy scaled standoff distances (i.e., Sachs scaling). The purpose of this work is to provide a database of drag loads that can be used to evaluate the structural response of piping, vessels, equipment, and supporting structures. Unbalanced pressure layout in the piping system results in the presence of dynamic forces that may excite mechanical vibrations [1,7, 22, 23, 24].\u0000 In industrial applications, mechanical vibrations are present mostly in resonant conditions. Our previous study investigated the excitation source of the FIV for tee junctions experimentally to understand the FIV mechanism and to obtain Power Spectral Density (PSD) profiles of pressure fluctuations. Unsteady Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations with a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) model were also performed to understand the turbulent structure for the tee junctions. As a result, the experiment shows the PSD profiles of pressure fluctuations have a dominant frequency component around Strouhal number 0.16, and the simulation results were well matched with the results of the experiment. The simulated flow field showed that the relatively large vortex shed from the branch pipe impinged periodically on the bottom of the main pipe with a frequency of Strouhal number 0.16, and the large vortex was dissipated downstream. These vortex behaviors would be the main mechanism generating the FIV excitation source. This study reports the simulation results of the vibration response by the fluid-structure coupling simulation with a one-way coupling method, which uses the unsteady pressure fluctuations obtained by CFD simulations. The simulated vibration response shows good agreement with the experiment.
