The basic idea of the proposed scheme is to improve Jamin et al.'s predictive service so as to take into account the effect of retransmissions of packets in a parameterized manner. The goodness of the scheme is evaluated by simulation. The result of simulations indicates that the proposed scheme can guarantee a predetermined delay bound without degrading the link utilization rate by appropriately selecting the value of a configurable parameter.","PeriodicalId":185817,"journal":{"name":"The 2004 47th Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems, 2004. Our acceleration platform, called spiking neural network emulation engine (SEE), makes use of this fact in order to tackle the main bottleneck of memory bandwidth during the simulation of large networks and is capable to treat up to 2/sup 19/ neurons and more than 800 10/sup 6/ synaptic weights. The incorporated neuron state calculation can be reconfigured in order to consider sparse or dense connection schemes. Performance evaluations have revealed that the simulation time scales with the number of adaptive weights. The SEE architecture promises an acceleration by at least factors of 4 to 8 for laterally full-connected networks compared to simulations executed by a stand-alone PC.","PeriodicalId":185817,"journal":{"name":"The 2004 47th Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems, 2004. We propose IIR deconvolution estimators which serve to solve the problems of deconvolution for FIR channels with different performance metrics, H/sub /spl infin//, H/sub 2/, or mixed H/sub /spl infin///H/sub 2/ norm criteria. First, LMI based formulations for optimal deconvolution problems of FIR channels are given. Then by exploiting the special structure of the state space models possessed by FIR channels, we obtain a closed efficient input output realization of the resulting deconvolution estimators. An example is also provided to demonstrate the effective of our formulations and give insight about the effect of delays on deconvolution performance.","PeriodicalId":185817,"journal":{"name":"The 2004 47th Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems, 2004. In this paper, we present a complexity-reduced three dimensional (3D) motion estimator (ME) which reduces the number of search candidates and hence gate count significantly. Moreover, by virtue of its recursive architecture, hardware estimated sum of absolute differences (SAD) and motion vectors (MV) can be passed backed to the embedded DSP processor for image segmentation, resulting in efficient software/hardware partition in SoC designs. In addition, the calculated SAD's can also be further analyzed by the embedded CPU for rate control in video coding. Alleviating traditional ME artifacts such as illumination, this motion estimator with segmentation capabilities is readily applicable to video object planes (VOP) processing in levels higher than the advance simple profile in MPEG4, H.264 and motion compensated format converters such as deinterlacers and scan-rate converters.","PeriodicalId":185817,"journal":{"name":"The 2004 47th Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems, 2004. An optimum gain, VSWR and circular polarization properties that make these antennas suitable to be used in satellite communications systems are obtained. The problem is that different algorithms tend to yield different results based on the assumptions made to the images content. A new binarization algorithm is proposed to deal with such images. The algorithm proposed uses statistical and texture feature measures to obtain a feature vector from a pixel window of size (2n+1)/spl times/(2n+1), it then uses a multi-layer perceptron neural network (MLP NN) to classify each pixel value in the image. The proposed method performed better than existing global and local thresholding techniques and works on different variety of images. The algorithm provides a local understanding of pixels from its neighborhood. This new method that uses NN and works on scanned documents with non-uniform backgrounds.","PeriodicalId":185817,"journal":{"name":"The 2004 47th Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems, 2004.
