It manifests through three stages of skin involvement that mirror the tumor's progression. Remarkably, skin lesions precede tumor symptoms or diagnosis in two-thirds of cases, underscoring the crucial role of suspecting this condition as it can promptly reveal an underlying neoplasm. Treatment primarily focuses on addressing the root neoplasm, with recurrent skin lesions potentially indicating tumor relapse. In this context, we present a clinical case involving a male patient whose manifestation of this syndrome facilitated the timely diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. This case underscores the significance of understanding this uncommon syndrome and its link to cancer, enabling early and accurate oncological diagnosis.</p>","PeriodicalId":18419,"journal":{"name":"Medicina-buenos Aires","volume":"84 1","pages":"163-167"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139564388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the disease is gradually following a path to endemicity in some regions of the country, the incorporation of these vaccines will have the potential to tackle the growing incidence of the disease and to reduce the disease burden. However, the establishment of the vaccination programme may also be susceptible of threats related to the epidemiological shift of the disease. Selecting a specific age group for the vaccine may result in a change in the peak incidence to other age groups more susceptible to severe forms of the disease, such as children or the elderly. Furthermore, the perception of protection following vaccine introduction in one jurisdiction may reduce adherence to vector control activities, increasing the risk of virus introduction and transmission in other areas not prioritised by the vaccination strategy, and the risk of other arboviral diseases such as Zika and chikungunya fever. These and other potential limitations to be considered prior to the implementation of vaccination programmes are discussed in this article, with a series of recommendations on how to address these concerns. These recommendations can help decision makers and public health practitioners at this early stage of the vaccination programme development.</p>","PeriodicalId":18419,"journal":{"name":"Medicina-buenos Aires","volume":"84 4","pages":"734-740"},"PeriodicalIF":0.6,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"142036319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One potential candidate for DR in cancer treatment is sodium dichloroacetate (DCA), which has been shown to alter tumor metabolism and decrease apoptosis resistance in cancer cells. In this paper, we present a scoping review of the use of DCA for cancer treatment in adult patients, aiming to identify key research gaps in this area. This scoping review aims to explore the existing scientific literature to provide an overview of the use of DCA (any dose, frequency, or route of administration) in adults with cancer. A comprehensive literature search of the medical databases MEDLINE/PubMed, LILACS, EPISTEMONIKOS, the Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials was performed. We included publications reporting on adult patients diagnosed with any type of cancer treated with sodium dichloroacetate in combination or not with other drugs. All types of study design were included. A total of 12 articles were included, most of them were case reports. We found a high degree of heterogeneity between them. The most frequent adverse events in the evaluated studies were asthenia, reversible toxicity, and an increase in liver enzymes. Effectiveness was difficult to evaluate. We conclude that there is insufficient evidence to affirm that treatment with DCA in cancer patients is effective or is safe.</p>","PeriodicalId":18419,"journal":{"name":"Medicina-buenos Aires","volume":"84 2","pages":"313-323"},"PeriodicalIF":0.8,"publicationDate":"2024-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140860695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"医学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
