This study focuses on the effects of the porous media structure on the efficiency of nonpremixed combustion, namely combustion temperature and NOx emissions. For this investigation, methane-air combustion within a two-layer porous media is considered. Twodimensional axisymmetric model is chosen to reduce the number of elements and the corresponding computational resource requirements. Fluid turbulence is resolved using the kω SST turbulence model, while the turbulence-controlled reaction rates are computed using the eddy dissipation model. Stoichiometric, two-step methane-air reaction is utilized in the reaction zone. In the present model both thermal and prompt NOx formation mechanisms are considered, where an extended Zeldovich mechanism is used for thermal NOx formation. For high combustion temperatures where radiative heat flux is larger than that of convection and conduction heat transfer rates, radiation becomes the dominant heat transfer mode. To account for the emission and scattering of thermal radiation by the porous media, the Discrete Ordinate model is considered. The relationship between velocity and pressure corrections is calculated using the SIMPLE algorithm. The layered porous zone arrangement is utilized to increase combustion performance due to enhanced fuel-air mixing through increased heat recirculation within the multilayer porous media. Utilizing two layers of equal height, ɛ=0.6 and 0.45, upstream and downstream, respectively increased combustion temperature while decreasing combustion zone and NOx emission. Additionally, the effects of the thickness of each layer on combustion efficiency are studied. Increasing the height of the low porosity downstream region, which effectively decreases the height of the upstream high porosity region, resulted in increased NOx emissions due to higher temperature in the combustion zone. To this end, a gradient-based algorithm is employed, and the sensitivity analysis is performed by introducing an alternative finite difference method (FDM). Unlike the original FDM, a proposed method can dramatically reduce the computation cost due to its simplified format. The form-finding problem is formulated as the unconstrained optimization problem with an objective function defined by half mean squared error. In the optimization process, static analysis for the catenary constructed by the 2-node beam elements is performed at each iteration calculation using commercial software. A well-defined unconstrained optimization problem is solved successfully, and the validity of the suggested optimization method is supported by the numerical results obtained for specific design conditions.","PeriodicalId":184087,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Canadian Mechanical Engineering. Due to the absence of a heating loop, high thermal impedance of the soil, and the continuous need for cooling, geothermal systems have significant challenges to serve the data center cooling needs. Considering these limitations, this paper investigates the possibility of developing a geothermal cooling system for a 250 kW data center. The proposed cooling model utilizes underground as a heat sink, and the heat is transferred from the server room to the underground relentlessly. Air-water heat exchangers installed at the rack-level, exchange the heat between the hot server room air and the cold water circulated from the underground geothermal well system. A numerical model is developed to analyze this heat rejection process, with the focus on the thermal performance of the geothermal-well system. This system is analyzed under steady-state and transient conditions. An analytical approach is used to study the thermal steady state of the system, and a numerical approach is used for the transient state. The results suggest that it is not feasible to operate the system under steady-state conditions, due to the high thermal resistance of the soil. Also, they imply that the heat transferred through a single well is insignificant, and hence, a multiple geothermal well system is developed. The thermal performance of this well system is used to infer the feasibility of developing a geothermal cooling solution for data centers.","PeriodicalId":184087,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Canadian Mechanical Engineering. These injuries can result in reduced functional performance and are associated with long-term clinical conditions that include meniscal tears, chondral lesions and an increased risk of early onset osteoarthritis (OA). Surgical reconstruction is the current gold standard of care for ACL injuries. However, surgical treatment is costly and associated with high risk of post-traumatic OA within two decades of injury. Researchers have explored tissue engineering (TE) to address these shortcomings and have developed degradable graft materials that can guide functional connective tissue formation. However, scaffolds fabricated using TE methods still do not accurately mimic the anisotropic architecture and biomechanical properties of the ACL. Furthermore, the biological graft remodeling process causes significant reductions in tensile properties of the tissue-engineered scaffolds, which adds complexity to the design of such structures. Our hypothesis is that reductions in mechanical properties can be minimized by enclosing the scaffold in an artificial semi-permeable membrane and incubating it in vivo prior to ACL surgical reconstruction. A low-cost ACL scaffold was additively manufactured via fused deposition modeling using LAY-FOMM material (thermoplastic polyurethanes co-polymer with polyvinyl alcohol). Scaffolds replicating the anatomical dimensions of the ACL were printed on a Flashforge Creator Pro 3D Printer and evaluated for mechanical properties such as tensile strength, strain at failure, compression strength and Young’s modulus. A topology optimization (TO) and laminate optimization approach to design a lightweight passenger seat concept was performed. Also, two types of discontinuous carbon-fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP), sheet molding compound (SMC) and long fiber prepreg sheet (LFPS) were compared in a case study against aluminum. discontinuous CFRP materials have undergone technological advancement and can pose as cost effective alternatives to continuous CFRP materials with acceptable performance loss. Optimization results were interpreted to form three lightweight design concepts which show notable weight saving potential. Among the three equal mass concepts, both discontinuous CFRP concepts showed 6-8% lower compliance compared to aluminum, indicating potential for further weight reduction when using discontinuous CFRP material to meet the same stiffness requirements as a conventional aluminum design.","PeriodicalId":184087,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Canadian Mechanical Engineering. The study is limited to the isothermal mode with no consideration of buoyancy forces, wall radiations, convection flows, etc. The numerical simulations have been compared against experimental measurements (not shown here), and the most proper index was used to indicate ventilation performance. The CFD simulations were performed by using the commercial ANSYS Fluent software. The results indicate an improvement in the air distribution inside the room using PDD. Furthermore, by analyzing different comfort indices such as terminal velocities, the discomfort zones have been determined in the occupant zone. Accurate estimation of ET provides useful information for water resource management, irrigation planning and crop sustainability. This study estimates the reference evapotranspiration (ET) with recurrent neural networks (RNN) namely long short term memory (LSTM) and Bidirectional LSTM. Four meteorological stations (North Cape, Summerside, Harrington and Saint Peters) were selected in Prince Edward Island. A new dataset namely PEI was computed by averaging climatic variables from all four sites to capture climatic variability from all parts of the province. The highest contributing climatic variables namely maximum air temperature and relative humidity were selected based on subset regression analysis as input variable for training (2011-2015) and testing (2016-2017) sets. The results suggested that the LSTM and Bidirectional LSTM are suitable methods to estimate reference ET with considerable accuracy as R 2 > 0.90 for test set (2016-2017) for all site except Harrington. Testing period (2016-2017) root mean square errors were recorded in range of 0.38-0.58 mm/day for all sites. No major differences were observed in accuracy of LSTM and Bidirectional LSTM. Another objective of this study was to highlight the potential gap between reference ET and rainfall for agriculture sustainability in Prince Edward Island. The data from 2011-2017 highlights that the reference ET surpasses the rainfall affecting potential yield of major crops in the island. Viable options such as supplemental irrigation may needed to replenish the crop water requirements in drier months for agriculture sustainability.","PeriodicalId":184087,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Canadian Mechanical Engineering. While the Kalman filter produces the optimal estimate for known linear systems with Gaussian noise, most electromechanical systems such as magnetorheological dampers contain nonlinearities. Nonlinear strategies such as the extended Kalman filter and smooth variable structure filter can be used to estimate the force produced by a damper given its velocity and acceleration and applied current. This paper compares the extended Kalman filter and the smooth variable structure filter on a magnetorheological damper that is subject to harmonic excitation. The purpose of this study is to apply and compare estimation methods that may be used in conjunction with a reliable controller for applications on a magnetorheological damper.","PeriodicalId":184087,"journal":{"name":"Progress in Canadian Mechanical Engineering.
