In addition, vehicle performance results derived from time-series data show relationships that help to characterize driving cycles. Such findings confirm the advantages of time-series data over statistical data, in allowing correlation of vehicle performance characteristics with driving cycles. The driving-cycle vehicle performance analyses were performed using time-series data collected at the Electric and Hybrid Vehicle (EHV) National Data Center (NDC). A total of 71 EHVs are registered in the NDC and over 4000 trips files have already been uploaded into the NDC database, as of May 1997. Numerous EHVs on multiple trips have been analyzed over the past two years. This paper presents the results of time-series data collected and analyzed for two specific vehicles of the overall program, to illustrate the value of time-series data. We examined specific parameters such as average vehicle speed, number of stops during a trip, average distance traveled between stops, vehicle acceleration, and average DC kWh consumed per kilometer. Correlation among various parameters is presented in relationship to three driving cycles (highway, suburban, and urban), along with suggested ranges of parametric values defining the regimes of the different cycles.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. Excessive levels of noise can, however, be as harmful to human health and the environment as noxious gases. In a well-designed engine, mechanical noise can be kept to a minimum but the combustion process itself still generates noise, \"combustion noise\". Thus, if the combustion process is modified for exhaust emission control it can be expected that the level of noise generated by combustion will also be affected, albeit not necessarily adversely. As exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is becoming an essential technology for NO/sub x/ emission control in diesel engines, and, as this technique modifies the combustion process, it is important that the effects of using EGR on noise generation be identified.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. {"title":"Variable displacement vane pump","authors":"J. Tschantz, B. What has been developed under this program is a pumping system which can vary the amount of fuel delivered according to engine needs, thereby reducing the temperature rise of the fuel to very low levels. This permits the elimination of the air/oil coolers and conserves the vital airflow through the fan. The variable displacement vane pump (VDVP) also permits a substantial simplification of the control system with the elimination of complex metering valves, offering a significant reduction in fuel system cost. This program was initiated to develop a technology that embodied the ruggedness of the gear pump with the efficiency and metering versatility of the variable displacement vane pump. Thick metal vanes emulate the teeth on pumping gears while the simple, elegant swing cam feature provides the variable displacement capability without the unwieldy multiple cam segments found in other concepts. The result is a pumping architecture which is rugged, light in weight and extremely versatile, having demonstrated superb heat management and controllability in extensive bench and engine testing. This paper reports the results that the pumps have achieved to date both in terms of durability and efficiency.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. The value analysis method allows for incremental changes in the levelized electricity cost (LEC) to be determined between a baseline plant and a modified plant. Thermodynamic cycle analyses and component sizing are carried out in the model followed by economic analysis which provides LEC results. The emphasis of the present work is on evaluating the effect of mixed working fluids instead of pure fluids on the LEC of a geothermal binary plant that uses a simple organic Rankine cycle. Four resources were studied spanning the range of 265/spl deg/F to 375/spl deg/F. A variety of isobutane and propane based mixtures, in addition to pure fluids, were used as working fluids. This study shows that the use of propane mixtures at a 265/spl deg/F resource can reduce the LEC by 24% when compared to a base case value that utilizes commercial isobutane as its working fluid. The cost savings drop to 6% for a 375/spl deg/F resource, where an isobutane mixture is favored. Supercritical cycles were found to have the lowest cost at all resources.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. A major PX cell design challenge was to optimize the power and efficiency of the cell while allowing a broad operational power range. These design optimization issues are greatly dependent on the placement of the evaporation zone. Before the PX-2 and PX-4 cells were built, the results from the PX-1, ATC-2 (artery test cell) and design analysis indicated the need for a thermal bridge between the heat input surface of the cell and the structure supporting the evaporation zone. Test and analysis results are presented illustrating the magnitude of the power transfer to the evaporation zone and the effect of this power transfer on the performance of the cell. Comparisons are also made between the cell test data and analysis results of cell performance to validate the analytical models.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. The results showed that this heat pump had a practical performance for a heat storage system from viewpoints of durability to repetitive operation and heat output. The reactivity of a reactor bed was kept during ten times of repetitive reactions except a lowering of reactivity in initial three reaction cycles. From the reactivity change during whole cycles, it was surmised that this material had enough durability for dozens of times of repetition. The system was able to store thermal energy at about 430/spl deg/C and to supply thermal energy at about 85-125/spl deg/C as a heat amplifier type heat pump, and the heat output power exceeded 50 W per 1 kg of initial magnesium hydroxide during 40-60 minutes. The results of experiments and simulations showed that the heat pump had enough thermal storage capacity and thermal power as a practical system.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. A comprehensive Langmuir-Hinshelwood kinetic model of methanol-steam reforming on Cu/ZnO/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalyst was used to simulate a methanol-steam reformer operating at pressures up to 45 bar. At constant temperature and steam-to-methanol ratio, increasing the pressure results in an increase in the initial rate of the reaction and a corresponding improvement in reformer performance. This is partially offset as the equilibrium conversion decreases with increasing pressure. The rate of reaction is highest at low conversion. The result is that there is a large heat demand near the entrance of the catalyst bed which causes a strong endothermic effect and a corresponding temperature minimum. In the worst case, this temperature minimum can be below the dew-point temperature of the operating fluid causing a loss in reformer performance due to condensation in the pores of the catalyst. The situation is exacerbated by the potential for thermal damage to other regions of the catalyst bed if the heating temperature is increased to overcome the endothermic effect. Catalyst deactivation at elevated pressures was also studied in an 80 hour experiment at 260/spl deg/C. Increasing the operating pressure did not accelerate the rate of deactivation for the typical gas compositions encountered during normal reformer operation. Catalyst selectivity improved at lower conversion due to kinetic effects.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. AMTEC (alkali-metal thermoelectric conversion) power conversion is the DOE-selected technology for an advanced, high-efficiency RPS to power the Pluto Express Fly-By spacecraft. An AMTEC-based RPS using the general purpose heat source (GPHS) has been conceptually designed to satisfy the Pluto Express power requirements. Integrated AMTEC cell and system thermal/electrical design analyses, structural design analyses and mass analyses were performed to define an optimum system design. Using fresh radioisotope fuel at beginning of mission, the RPS produces 102 watts of power, has a mass of 8.35 kg (specific power density=12.2 watts/kg), with a system conversion efficiency of 20.3%. Mass/power scale-up estimates have also been generated, indicating that a 150-watt version of this RPS would weigh approximately 11.3 kg. This paper presents and discusses the key features of this RPS design, the design and analysis methodology, and the numerous system and AMTEC cell tradeoff studies establishing the optimum AMTEC-based RPS.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat. The initial three spacecraft within this new series, which are known by the name of Meteosat Second Generation (MSG), are due to be progressively launched as from the year 2000 onwards. The major objective of this mission is the continuation of the European weather watch and space borne atmospheric sensing services provided by the present series of Meteosat spacecraft. To satisfy this mission requirement, the payload compliment to be supported by MSG will be consist of a comprehensive earth viewing instrument capable of operating in both the infra-red and visible spectrum, an Earth radiation measurement system and a search and rescue facility. In furnishing the power needs for these payloads, the power generating element on the spin stabilised MSG spacecraft consists of a body mounted solar array, capable of providing 628 watts of electrical power at the end of seven years of geosynchronous orbital lifetime. The energy storage elements for the spacecraft consists of two, 29 ampere-hour batteries, whilst centralised power management is achieved by the power control unit, which satisfies the payload and battery re-charge demands by controlling the available solar array power. Power distribution for the spacecraft electrical loads and heaters is achieved by the power distribution unit and for the pyrotechnic devices by the pyrotechnic release unit.","PeriodicalId":183668,"journal":{"name":"IECEC-97 Proceedings of the Thirty-Second Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference (Cat.
