Few studies have identified the assumed relationships between learner motivation and self-regulation in English language study. This study aims to investigate motivation in English learning as well as self-regulated language learning habits among EFL students from different majors of study at Hanoi Law University, and make some suggestions to improve students’ learning motivation and SRLLB. A total of 138 EFL junior and senior students from five majors at Hanoi Law University took part in the study. The research utilized an online questionnaire with sufficient reliability to gather data. The valid responses collected were analyzed to achieve the desired aims. The results indicated that the surveyed students had more intrinsic motivation than extrinsic motivation, showing that they had high self-efficacy and most of them were positively motivated and promoted to regulate English learning behaviors. In addition, some significant conclusions have been drawn from the research.","PeriodicalId":182460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Conference on Language Teaching and Learning","volume":"172 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123018606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Frequency relation is the relationship between the event mentioned and the number of times that event is mentioned in the text. The frequency in the story is classified by researchers into three cases: singulative (a case that occurs only once and is told in the story once), repetitive (a case where an event occurs once and is told in the story more than once) and iterative (an event that occurs many times and is told in the story only once). This article will look into what frequency relationship type is used in The Wharf without husband by Duong Huong to show that the time relationship not only plays a great role in creating texts but also make it framed tighter and more coherence. Thereby, it also proves Duong Huong’s talent in the art of creating stories.","PeriodicalId":182460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Conference on Language Teaching and Learning","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124192287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The majority of students, on the other hand, appear to be reluctant to online instruction. The goal of the study is to enhance students’ interaction in online classes. The theory of increasing online teaching interactivity has been applied in the research, which includes interactions between students and the course content, interactions between teachers and students, and interactions among students. The research took place over two semesters and lasted 120 hours, involving 70 participants. After the students complete one unit of the syllabus, each group is assigned to do a team project or make a presentation online. The research data is gathered through observations by the teacher and a questionnaire designed to assess the quality of the online course. The findings demonstrate that working on projects can improve the students’ interaction and communication. Through group work, students participate in collaborative learning during the course. These interactions can boost students' online learning motivation and efficiency; therefore, they can help them improve their performance. It is suggested that the value of interaction should be emphasized in the online setting.","PeriodicalId":182460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Conference on Language Teaching and Learning","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114834815","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Throughout the stages of the pandemic more than two years, mass media has played a vital role in circulating much of (mis)information regarding the pandemic. As a part of attempts to record social, cultural, and economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, this research aims to pursue a data-based discourse analysis on representations of COVID-19 using data in Coronavirus Corpus developed by Mark Davies. This study examine how various types of texts mediated in English have represented any issues and situations surrounding COVID. We utilize a corpus-oriented discourse analysis framework, which integrates methods of quantity-based corpus linguistics and those of quality- based discourse analysis. The study’s implications on English education are also pursued.","PeriodicalId":182460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Conference on Language Teaching and Learning","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121156047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, VSL has not been unified across regions, has not been officially taught in educational institutions and has not been interested by researchers. The article mainly uses the descriptive method to analyze the linguistic features of VSL in terms of phonetics, vocabulary, and grammar. Besides, the author also uses activities such as collecting documents, analyzing, synthesizing, comparing to make the necessary judgments and conclusions. The article will introduce VSL from the perspective of linguistics with phonological, lexical, and grammatical aspects - through which readers can see the unique characteristics of VSL. It also analyzes the outstanding issues, what needs to be done to move towards a unified VSL, to become the object of research in Linguistics and to be taught officially in the School. Besides, the research directions or the development of sign languages of some countries such as the US, UK... are also mentioned in the article as experiences that Vietnam can learn and absorb.","PeriodicalId":182460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Conference on Language Teaching and Learning","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132527453","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Evangeline","doi":"10.21467/proceedings.132.14","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21467/proceedings.132.14","url":null,"abstract":"The purpose of this study is to analyse how the semiotic resources can be helpful in improving or increasing the level of learning among young learners especially in rural India. Technology has taken a new shape especially in the sector of education, information and communication. Even in the swift developmental process around the world, some communities or people still stay away from margin, unaware of the development in the education and technology. The children who are in rural areas are economically, socially backward and are deprived from good education. This affects them psychologically. In urban areas education level has raised consistently and school children are privileged to get good education and shape their personality accordingly. Education to the young learners is not simply reading books and passing the examination. It must help them to prepare for their future. These categories of children can be taught using different modes of semiotic resources to make them understand the language and the concepts clearly. Semiotic resources can be used in communication, especially using the language, gestures and expressions. This has a great impact on teaching learning process. This paper gives an idea of how these semiotic resources can be used effectively to teach English language and how it can be embedded in educational settings.","PeriodicalId":182460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Conference on Language Teaching and Learning","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128497788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The textbook is still the most common type of material utilized in today's foreign language classrooms. It serves as the core of a training program and provides learners with the essential input they require through a wide range of different activities. This article clarified the textbook, coursebook, and materials' roles in ELT classrooms. This article also reviewed three main approaches to coursebook evaluation: Tomlinson’s approach (2003), Littlejohn’s approach (1998 & 2011), and McGrath’s approach (2002). The author also summarized the main criteria for textbook evaluation. The design of future textbooks at tertiary levels is discussed, along with some of the potential directions that could be taken.","PeriodicalId":182460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Conference on Language Teaching and Learning","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132344377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the Covid 19 began its global rampage in the early year 2019, online learning has got its spotlight ever since. All sudden, not only lecturers but students have to face with the whole new level of learning and teaching: “put everything online”. For that reason, listening class must be conducted online and both students and lectures have no other choices to accept and get used to this new kind of class. The main subject of this study is the second-year students in an English major class. Forty students served as participants in this study. The study focuses on finding out student’s thought of effectiveness of offline and online classes and their perception about these two types of classes. The students will answer a Google Form Online. Hopefully, through this study, not only lectures but also teachers of all ages may understand thoroughly online teaching so that schools, universities, and other educational institutions can be more confidently in using teaching online to make education more diverse and improve the experience of, and outcomes for, students.","PeriodicalId":182460,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th Conference on Language Teaching and Learning","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128767269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
