Conventionally a primary panel with surface markers are applied first followed by cytoplasmic markers as secondary panel in the diagnosis of acute leukemia. We in this present study aim to assess the relevance of a single 5 color “CD45, MPO, CD79a, CD3, Tdt” cytoplasmic markers combination to be utilized as primary panel. \u0000Methods: Sensitivity and specificity of different subset of positive negative combination of these markers were retrospectively analyzed in the 458 acute leukemia cases. \u0000Results: MPO or cCD3 positivity alongwith cCD79a negativity was 100% specific diagnosis for AML and T-ALL respectively. Furthermore, cCD79a positivity along with MPO and cCD3 negativity was 97.2% specific for B-ALL diagnosis. MPO and cCD79a dual positivity was found 100% sensitive and 92.6% specific for MPAL (B-My) diagnosis. MPO and cCD3 dual positivity was 100% sensitive and specific for MPAL (T-My) diagnosis. \u0000Conclusion: We found a good correlation of this single tube diagnosis when compared with standard morphology, cytochemistry, and flow cytometry based diagnosis. We hope our this cytoplasmic panel may help to design a precise extended immunophenotypic panel for acute leukemia diagnosis and may also be a cost effective approach in resource constrained developing countries.

It has an essential role in patient management within health care systems. Up to 150 000 pregnancy-related deaths could be avoided worldwide each year through access to safe blood. Of the estimated 80 million units of blood donated annually worldwide, only 38% are collected in the developing world where 82% of the world’s population lives. There is no substitute for blood. Only blood donors can maintain an adequate supply of blood to save the lives of those who need it. However, a very large proportion of potentially eligible population were present, they do not actively donate blood. \u0000Objectives: This study was assessed the practice of voluntary blood donation and associated factors among Madawalabu University Students, Southeast Ethiopia. \u0000Methods: Institution-based cross-sectional study design was conducted in May 1-15, 2015 among 634. Ten college/schools/institute were stratified into health and non-health. Six non health schools randomly selected and the Health College taken as it is. Self- administered structured questionnaires were used to collect the data. Data was checked for their completeness, enter in to Epidata version 3.1, and export to SPSS version 21 for analysis. Descriptive analysis was used to determine the prevalence. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were employed to identify associated factors by considering p-value of less than 0.05 as significant. The results were presented in a narrative forms, tables and graphs. \u0000Results: From 634 sampled students, 609 students participated in the study with a response rate of 96.1%. From the total respondents, 18.4% (112) had ever donated blood in their life. Twenty-five (22.3%) of the donors donated the blood two and above times. From those had ever donated blood, 70.5% (79) of them were voluntarily donated. \u0000Conclusions: Though, the university students are in the range of age of huge pool for blood donation, proportion of students have ever donated blood are low. Age, year of study, willingness to donate in the future, had feared to donate blood, willingness to encourage relatives to donate, and attitude toward voluntary blood donation were the predictor variables for voluntary blood donation. Madawalabu University in collaboration of zonal blood bank should work to increase the knowledge level of university students on voluntary blood donation.

Thus, PC may contain a small amount of donor RBC. We report a case of a 60 year-old male patient with past medical history of coronary artery disease, who presented to our emergency department with shortness of breath. Previous medical history indicated a recent admission, one month prior, to another local hospital for shock and respiratory failure. Type and screen (T/S) done at that time reveal an O+ blood type with negative antibody screen. During that admission, the patient received only 5 doses of PC (2-group O+, 2-group O-, and 1-group A-). He denied any other recent blood product transfusions at any other facility. Our current T/S, and before any transfusions, showed a positive antibody screen. A panel for antibody identification was performed. The antibody reacted with 9 out of 10 reagent cells. The reactivity was predominately at room temperature and 37°C phases indicating an IgM class antibody. Some reactivity was also seen at AHG (anti-human globulin) phase indicating an IgG class antibody. The auto control was negative. Testing additional cells revealed an anti-e specificity. Patient’s “e” antigen typing was performed and found to be negative indicating that this is a true allo-antibody. Since anti-e antibody predominantly exists as an IgG immunoglobulin class antibody, the presence of IgM class reactivity suggests that this may be a newly developed antibody. This case illustrates that antibodies to RBC antigens can develop after platelet transfusion.

The most common cause is iron deficiency. Iron deficiency anemia is relatively easy to diagnose using a serum ferritin of <15 ng/ml. However, because ferritin is an acute phase reactant, the diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia in hospitalised or ill patients may be difficult, since serum ferritin may be normal or raised, even in the face of iron deficiency. Soluble transferrin receptor assay (sT-fR) may be useful in these situations because it reflects the degree of iron requirement in relation to supply, and it is not an acute phase reactant. \u0000Aim: The aims of our study are to affirm the value and specificity of sT-fR and integrate it in the list of routine parameters of iron status in the differential diagnosis of anemia in our laboratories in Algeria. \u0000Patients and Method: Our study included 130 patients divided into three groups: control group with 40 healthy adult (22 men and 18 women). Group 2, with 30 patients (11 men and 19 women) hospitalized at the hematology department of the University Hospital “Abdelkader Hassani” of Sidi Bel Abbes, which represents the group of subjects with purely iron deficiency anemia without any associated disease (IDA) having rates of C-reactive protein (CRP <10 mg/L), and the third group with 60 anemic patients with anemia of chronic disease (ACD) (36 men and 24 women) hospitalized at the department of Internal Medicine of the University Hospital of Sidi Bel Abbes. Each patient underwent a complete blood count, an iron status, and the sT-fR assays, and inflammatory balance (CRP). All these examinations were performed immediately on fresh plasma and serum; assays were performed by immunoturbidimetric method. Statistical analyzes of the data (mean and standard deviation, correlation coefficients, tests for normality and comparison of means) were performed using the software Statview (1998). A P-value (P<0.05) was considered statistically significant, all P values are calculated by the t-test function using bilateral distribution. \u0000Results: The control group (healthy subjects) has a normal iron status. All parameters with levels in normal ranges in both sexes for 100% of subjects. The outcome of the second group is in perfect agreement with IDA for all of its parameters, it has a very disturbed iron status representative of this anemia: anemia (Hb <120 g/L); microcytosis (MCV <80 fl); circulating pool (serum iron decreased high transferrinemia); reserves depleted (ferritin <30 μg/L) and erythropoietic needs high iron (high sT-fR). In the third group it's difficult to interpret ferritin levels (very higher), it's in contradiction with the other parameters, which leads us to discuss the homogeneity of this group. Because there is gender effect on key parameters of our study (hemoglobin, ferritin and sT-fR are heterogeneous in both sexes (P<0.001), the results were analyzed separately between men and women. Analyses of results were done for discu

Umbilical cord blood was evaluated as alternate and very useful source of powerful stem cells. The usefulness of umbilical cord blood for transplantation is limited by the variable and often small amount of cord blood obtained from patients. The aim of this study was to examine maternal (gestational age, mode of delivery) and neonatal (birth weight, sex, mode of delivery, ABO and RhD blood types of neonates) factors affecting quantity and quality of CD34+ cells and determine correlations between them. \u0000Methods: A total of 189 umbilical cord blood (UCB) units donated to the Public Stem Cell Bank (Poland) were evaluated. After UCB processing, white blood cell count, the type of blood group, CD34+ cell count and percentage were determined. Differences were considered to be statistically significant when the p value was less than 0.05. \u0000Results: Positive correlation (r=0.273, p<0.05) between sex of the neonate and birth weight was reported. There is also correlation between sex and CD34+ cell number (r=0.187, p<0.05) as well as between sex and percentage of CD34+ cells (r=0.229, p<0.05). Furthermore, there is no correlation between gestational age and CD34+ cell number as well as between gestational age and percentage of CD34+ cells. Statistical analysis showed there is no relationship between blood group (ABO and RhD) and count of CD34+ cells. \u0000Conclusion: Our results suggest that sex/blood group typing is not useful for assessing whether future collected umbilical cord blood will possess greater or lower therapeutic potential, however it is necessary to perform the studies on larger population.

The failures of prevention are mainly due to the non-respect of established guidelines for RhIG prophylaxis, and to spontaneous undetected foetal-maternal haemorrhages without any obvious cause during the third trimester of pregnancy. In order to reduce the rate of residual post-pregnancy anti-D immunization, several countries decided to associate the classical prophylaxis to a routine antenatal anti-D prophylaxis (RAADP) during the 28th or 29th week of gestation. Since about ten years, the foetal RHD genotyping in maternal plasma enables us to limit the antenatal prophylaxis only to those D- women carrying a D+ foetus. This paper deals with: the advantages of an antenatal prevention in the light of non invasive foetal RHD genotyping, the rules rendering prevention protocols efficient whatever the algorithm applied, and the recommended immuno-haematology follow-up of women who have received RhIG.

Methods: The micro-column gel method was introduced to screen irregular antibodies in patient blood samples between June 2015 and June 2006 in our hospital. The antibody specificities of antibody-positive samples were identified, and the type and proportion of antibodies were analyzed. Results: A total of 130,866 samples of transfused patients were tested. The number of irregular antibody-positive cases was 1127 (positive rate=0.86% [1127/130,866]). The number of specific antibody cases was 576 (positive rate=51.11% [576/1127]). Among the positive cases, Rh type antibodies were shared in 78.29% of patients (451/576) and the number of anti-E cases was 358; Rh type antibodies existed in 79.37% of patients (358/451). The number of patients without a history of blood transfusion and pregnancy was 103; Rh type antibodies were shared 28.77% (103/358) in all anti-E cases. Conclusion: It is very important to screen for red cell irregular antibodies, especially Rh type antibody, before transfusion.
